Ready….Set…pARTy! March 2010

Here’s your image for the March pARTy. You have from midnight tonight until midnight March 20th to get your painting to us. Remember the idea is to complete your painting in a 24-hour span of time. Complete instructions are above. Email a low-res image (72 dpi, approx. 4 x 6 inches dimensionally) of your painting to us at thevirtualparty77@yahoo.ca – if you don’t get a reply acknowledging receipt, that means something went awry!

This handsome boy is Bellator, a young Warmblood gelding that lives at Inish’Or Farm in Puslinch, Ontario. Please remember to give credit to the photographer – in this case, Linda Shantz.

PS – if you’d like a high-res file from which to work, just send a request to the address above.

Heads Up! Next pARTy Coming!

Okay, let’s try to keep the momentum going with another pARTy for February. This one will be run during February 16th through the 20th. I think this time around I’ll be looking for a snow photo. Snow is challenging to paint, and maybe we’ll get some International participants this time who might not otherwise have the chance to paint snow!

Mark your calendars! And the same ‘rules’ apply. I think the header, above, is up-to-date on the information. Feel free to share, too! The more the merrier!

Jul 4 – Virtual pARTy Challenge, and a Demo

In the workshop this morning, I had to demonstrate morning light, so I picked up on an image from Linda Shantz, who organized a virtual pARTy for artists to do an image from the same source.

This is a 16 x 20 acrylic done for a morning light painting in the Color System, and depicts a very pregnant mare in a pasture. I modified the source material quite a lot and am quite pleased with this painting. Redesigning source material and making it one’s own is the mark of a confident artist, with an arsenal of ability to make source material just the “jumping off point” for the art. I love doing this! And in front of the eleven participants, I finished this up for them in record time.

You can see the source material and some of the other entries here. Mine won’t be there for a while until my registration is cleared.

Congratulations to new collector Louise Sackett from Santee, California, on her purchase of yesterday’s painting of the California Coast in moonlight!

Went to a virtual art pARTy organised and hosted by fellow artists Kim Santini, Linda Shantz .

This simply means one reference pic, one day to produce an inspired piece of work and another day to peek at all the variations on a theme provided by the other participants.

This pARTy’s reference picture was provide by photographer Juliet Harrison.

This are great challenges, especially for someone like me who likes to work too slowly.
With such a short dead-line you have to simplify and work loose and ….speed up!
Went for the first thing I saw: the bay horses eye and dilated nostril.
The diagonal composition emerged from there.
Sketched down a few lines (in ink would you believe!) picked up a 2B Derwent and got scribbling on Strathmore Bristol Smooth( 300 series).
Loaded The Killers into the hi-fi and swung into action.

Spent a little too long on the whole process (5 hours) but then again that’s what usually happens at a good party right?
