Getting caught up…..

It has been a while since I added to my blog. I will try to update as much as I can.

I was able to go to Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas to see The Horse Gift mural mosaic in person in early December. It is such a huge painting! You just cannot appreciate it until you see it in person. Outstanding! I got to meet Phil and Paul, fellow artists and producers of the mural. Such nice, sweet guys. If this mural is in your area, please make an effort to see it. My panel is #188. :)

Last year was one helluva ride for me, produced lots of paintings, sold many of them, sold commissions, did the Horse mural, participated in Art festivals, was invited to display my works at Central Park Art locally and at Calico Ghost Town Art Gallery, …..just had so much fun!

This year, however, is a basic downer. My son has decided to move to OK because of the recession, he lost his construction job and in his town there is no work, so he is selling his house and moving. Instead of a ‘quick’ 5 hour drive, it will be 19 hours from here. Not a weekend endeavor anymore. Because of my cat rescue and our horse and mule, we cannot leave for more than a weekend so I fear we will not see each other and my grandson for a very long time. While trying to better my art by taking classes, I caught the instructor’s cold and during it I fractured 2 ribs from coughing. Very painful still, so my mobility is limited. I also lost out on 2 art festivals I really wanted to attend. THEN, my computer took a dive and it took over 6 weeks to get another! My gosh, 6 weeks without being to socialize with my online friends and contacts was a hard thing to take!

However, now my ribs are easing up, I have the new computer, sent 5 new paintings to Calico, so hopefully all the bad things are now behind me. Whew!

I hope you are well and things are great with you.

A Surprise at the Post Office – Mural Mosaic Reproduction

When I checked the morning mail yesterday, I found a pick-up notice for a parcel. Having just gone through the receipt period for the 2008 World of Small & Miniature Art exhibit at the Carriage Factory Gallery, I naturally thought of that show first. Could someone have sent something to the house in error?

But there was no way for anyone to have made that mistake without doing some research.

I hadn’t ordered anything, so what could it be?

The package that was brought from the storage area at the post office was surprisingly large and equally baffling until I caught the name on the return address label.

Mural Mosaic.

My copy of the Le Cadeau Du Cheval “The Horse Gift” mural. I’d forgotten all about it in the crush of other, more immediate events.

As soon as I got home, I opened it. This was the first time I’d seen an actual, physical representation of the much larger mural and it was stunning. It still is!

Every time I look at the reproduction, I see something new. I can pick out the paintings of some of my friends. Sheri Gordon’s excellent Storm Chaser, for example. Or Linda Shantz’ tribute to Canadian Thoroughbred champion Dance Smartly or Michelle Grant’s tribute to her long-time friend and equine companion, Peach.

But I knew those paintings were there. I’d seen them and many others in work in progress demonstrations by the various artists.

The real surprise was all the other treasures to be found in the mural. There are 238 paintings in the larger work and every single one is a gem.

Tom Dorr’s Heavy Haulers was an immediate favorite of Neal’s, but so was Twyla Wehnes Untitled, which features a jousting victor.

The treasures I found included Shannon Luyendyk’s Storm Rider, Bill Shaddix’s Untitled and Lewis Lavoie’s Untitled, but there is literally something new to be found every time I look at the reproduction.

I was excited to be accepted into the project months ago. During the painting process, I was alternately frustrated and disappointed with the work I was doing and ultimately relieved when it was finished (standard emotions with any painting).

Having seen the whole project, I am now in awe of the project itself, all the great work that went into it and thankful to God and to the organizers for having been allowed to participate.

Lewis Lavoie, Phil Alain and Paul Lavoie have done a great thing, as have all the artists who participated. If you have a chance to see the mural in person, take it. You will not be disappointed.

The next stop on the mural’s tour schedule is Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas, Nevada December 4-13, 2008.

If you can’t make it to see the actual mural, reproductions are available through Mural Mosaic.

In the meantime, thank you for reading and best wishes!

AND………On December 6th and 7th, William Shatner is scheduled to be at the display signing prints of the mural! His likeness is on one of the panels of the mural. It will be so great to meet him, have pics taken with him under the mural, and have him sign my personal copy!!!!!

If you are in Las Vegas during this time, be sure to stop by and see just how big the mural is!

Mural News

Well, I’ll be! After a short time away from the Internet, I’ve learned so much has happened regarding the Cadeau du Cheval mural. As you all know, our first unveiling was at the Masters at Spruce Meadows in Alberta, and from there, the mural travelled south to Ohio for the All American Quarter Horse Congress where it was admired by beaucoup de people. Now, the mural is headed even further south down in Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo! Amazing!!!

What’s even more amazing is that, apparently, Horse Illustrated is doing an article on the mural, and so is Cowboys and Indians magazine. I’ve also learned that Cowboy Country T.V. has done a feature on a current episode (see http://www.cowboycountrytv.com/ about episode #710).

Now, I’m just super tickled about all of this, especially about us being on Cowboy Country. I’ve been a big fan of that show for quite a while now and would never miss an episode on Saturdays, and then I’d even often watch a few re-runs in a row on Sundays. I am saddened however that just when I move, I find out I don’t have Cowboy Country on cable where I am. Bummer. Real bummer. Not only do I miss Ash Cooper, and Dave and Barb Poulsen, but watching western artists on there was a real highlight for me. And that little violin ditty during the historical segment, boy, I miss that too . . . I wonder if I could order a copy of the show from their website?

Anyway, all of this news I got from reading Phil Alain’s blog at http://philalain.blogspot.com/ Phil’s got great stuff on there about the mural’s travels and about other murals. He’s also got great pictures from the mural events and I’m glad I can check out his blog since I can’t see it right now myself. Thanks for filling my imagination with the updates and pictures, Phil!

And on the painting beat, I’d started a small 5 x 7 horsie piece and plan on finishing either tonight or tomorrow. It’s kinda hard to get into it tonight with all of the U.S. election excitement, so it might be put off until tomorrow. But I do think painting small for now is a great idea.

I’ll post back real soon, and until then, you take care of yourselves and make tomorrow a great day!

Le Cheval Du Cadeau in Las Vegas

After stops at Spruce Meadows for the Masters (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and in Columbus, Ohio for Quarter Horse Congress, Le Cheval Du Cadeau will be heading west for its next appearance.

And going western.

Le Cadeau Du Cheval – The Horse Gift will be on display at Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas, Nevada this December.

Scheduled from December 4 – 13, 2008, Cowboy Christmas is the official gift show of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Cowboy Christmas is the longest running and ONLY ORIGINAL gift show of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Las Vegas Convention Center North Hall will be stuffed full of tack, equipment, clothing and all kinds of gift ideas for this ten-day show.

For anyone who loves to shop or loves the rodeo, it is the place to be in December

A massive collaborative mural combining 187 of some of the finest equine artists from around the world, Le Cadeau Du Cheval – The Horse Gift will add its own unique flare to this year’s Cowboy Christmas.

I was fortunate enough to have been able to participate in this unique, international event. The image you see with this blog is my 16″ x 16″ contribution, Windswept, an original oil painting on panel.

For those who enjoy seeing how paintings are made, the step-by-step painting process is now available on my web site. Due to time constraints on the creative portion of the project, I used a more direct painting technique on this painting, rather than the classical painting technique I prefer. I invite you to take a look.

If you are in town for the National Finals Rodeo in December, I also invite you to stop by and take a look at the original mural, as well.

Quarter Horse Congress

We have great weather here in Columbus, the sun is out in full force and I am having a wonderful time wandering the grounds. I stopped by Congress Hall and visited with the guys, Paul and Phil. They are great guys and it is so fun to watch Phil work the crowd answering any questions people may have while Paul is busy at the laptop. Make sure to visit Phil’s blog to see more on their trip experiences here at the Congress

Le Cheval Du Cadeau – US Unveiling

I am very pleased to let you all know that Le Cadeau Du Cheval – The Horse Gift, is scheduled for its official US unveiling on Friday, October 9, 2008, at The Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio.

A stunning collaborative mural combining 187 of some of the finest equine artists from around the world, this unique project is now complete and will begin to tour the world. I was fortunate enough to have been able to participate in this unique, international event. The image you see with this blog is my 16″ x 16″ contribution, Windswept.

I have put together blog entries and other notes on the creation of Windswept on a single page on my web site, where visitors can see the step-by-step painting process.

The Quarter Horse Congress runs from October 9 through October 26 this year. I am uncertain how long the mural will be in attendance, but if you are in the area, stop and take a look. Those who have seen it in person have been wowwed by its size and scope.

For those of us who love the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff, you will be interested in Phil Alain’s blog, Mural Mosaic and a Night of Artists describing the set up for the Mural at the Quarter Horse Congress location.

Go west and take pictures!

Well, what can I say but that it was a feast of photo ops for me last week, reflected in the excessive number of shots I am featuring today. I had a hard time settling on just these ones, and indeed would have inflicted yet more on you but Blogger won’t let me load more than five, and it’s probably just as well.

Every year for the past twelve years I’ve had an art booth at Equi-fair at the Spruce Meadows international show jumping venue in Calgary, held during the Masters competition. It was always a lot of work to get ready for this show–particularly since I was mostly producing time and labour intensive one-of-a-kind art pieces, mostly glass mosaics, so in addition to the concentrated effort required to get everything prepped for this five day show, I usually lost most of my summer as well to studio time. Now that I’ve switched media to something that isn’t heavy to haul around, breakable, or one of a kind (i.e. art photography) and that would be somewhat rational to haul to a long show, I decided the end had come for this particular chapter of my art life, so I didn’t have a booth there this year. However, I did want to have a bit of a “farewell tour” and just get to be a tourist with my camera for once, plus there was the added inducement of the unveiling and first showing of the Mural Mosaic project, of which I was a small part.

All this being the case, Jim and I headed west last Tuesday, dropping the boys off at Happy Dog Acres boarding kennel (where they do appear to be truly happy, since they can hardly wait to get in the door there and don’t seem that interested in us when we come to take them back home) then carrying on down the road to Calgary, which is about a seven hour drive if you keep at it, but was a bit more for us as I wanted to have the leisure to stop and take photos as desired, always having been under a strict timeline when I did this trip before.

We stay at a wonderful B and B just west of Spruce Meadows, run by a couple who in addition to being superb hosts have become good friends over the years that we have stayed with them. They are llama breeders and cat lovers, and we always enjoy the various aspects of staying there and indeed feel right at home.

The unveiling of the gigantic mural was early afternoon on Wednesday the 3rd (also our 42?? wedding anniversary, not sure how that happened or where all those years went) and we were on hand to see it assembled for the first time. There were a number of contributing artists there for the event and it was quite astonishing to see the scale of it in the Equi-fair venue (the main riding hall at Spruce Meadows in normal circumstances). If you Google “Mural Mosaic unveiling” or something of that sort, you can likely find some online shots. They had all the artists come up to the front for photos, which was nice. If you find some of these shots, I’m the one kneeling at the front with the big camera in my lap, and *not* dressed in black.

The rest of that day and the following one, we mooched around the site and took in a fair number of show jumping classes. Despite having been there every year for the last twelve years, I hadn’t made it to the International Ring for at least a decade, so it was a treat to flop around on the “peasant’s” bench seating with no time constraints, no booth or customers to rush back to, just watch the jumping and take some photos. Wander off for a coffee, come back for more shots.

Now it’s back to business at home, since in case I should, heaven forfend, not have enough to do already, I am organizing an art show/sale which will take place this coming Saturday, September 13, at Ebon Stables (where I ride) east of the city. Any Saskatoon and area readers of this blog are more than welcome to come to the show. There will be ten artists (painters, a print-maker, photographers) showcased at Ebon, and the potter’s group just down the road at Agar’s Corners will also be having a sale of pottery and other crafts, plus Peggy and Don Agar are doing up a fowl supper. Something for everyone! If you want details on any aspect of this show/sale (Art at Ebon) just email me at  judywood@sasktel.net  and I can give you any information you require. All we need is some decent enough weather (this is semi-outdoors) and we’re good to go.
On to the shots of the day.

First up is the ridiculously beautiful view to the west of the B and B where we stay. Those are the Rockies, and that’s a pretty tame sunset, but it’s what I could get. Still pretty darn nice. I was very short on light by the time I took this one, so I was happy to get anything at all.

Shot number two is one of the new kittens at the B and B. There are two of these beautiful little girls, and I was totally smitten with them. Again, having the luxury of time, I spent quite a bit of time each morning just sitting around on the grass watching them play. I think of all the wonderful photo ops I had on this trip, I had as much fun and pleasure getting kitten shots as I did any of the others. Can’t say I’m hard to please!

Shot three shows the mural mosaic just after the unveiling. You can see the scale of it quite well in this shot with the people at the base of it. My panel is totally invisible there as it is in the bottom row. You can check their website http://www.muralmosaic.com/Cadeau.html  to see it. It’s on the bottom row, fifth (I think) from the left. Look for the “Gothic” looking one with the black horses (all my boy Alpac), moon, crows and church.

Last two shots are from the International Ring. That’s Ian Millar on the grey going over the jump in typically good style, and the other shot is the Queen’s Cavalry (or whoever they were, not sure of the correct name) with some of the winning riders, at attention for the playing of God Save the Queen at the end of the day. I couldn’t figure out why they kept playing God Save the Queen at the time, but of course now that I think of the Queen’s Cavalry and Guards being the official escorts, it makes sense.

More About Le Cadeau du Cheval

A few more words about the mural project, “Le Cadeau du Cheval” from Mural Mosaic.

A couple of the Equine Art Guild members who were able to attend the unveiling ceremony were kind enough to share their photos with the rest of us, and after seeing them, all I can say is “Awesome!”. You really MUST spend some time looking at each of the panels. To do so, just click on the individual panel and you will be taken to a page where you can view that panel larger, see who painted it and read any story that the artist wrote about it. For instance mine is here.

I’ve posted an image above of the whole mural which may give you a better idea of its scope and what it’s about. Thanks to artist, Twyla Wehnes for sharing this photo, and remember that it’s protected by copyright and cannot be copied or used without permission.

Finally, I’d like to thank Phil and Lewis and Paul for inviting me to be a part of this incredible project. And also a thanks for the thrilling feature of my panel on Youtube.

"Le Cadeau Du Cheval" Mural Mosaic Unveiled !!!

I have been sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for this mural to begin its tour. The day has finally arrived. Yesterday, September 3, 2008 the Mural Mosaic was unveiled at The Masters at Spruce Meadows. Although I was unable to attend the event, I was so happy to see the completed mural up online!! (it may be viewed at www.muralmosaic.com.)

If the mural comes to a town near me and my hectic schedule allows, I look forward to seeing the mural in person.

And Here It Is!!!!

Yes folks, the mural for Le Cadeau du Cheval is finally completed and was unveiled today at Srpuce Meadows in Alberta. It’s a bittersweet event for me; I’m so thrilled about the unveiling and finally seeing the mural myself, but also a touch sad at not being able to have gone there. I am hoping to one day see the mural in person, so I’ll keep looking forward to that.

So, please make your way on over to www.muralmosaic.com and follow the links for the horse mural, or Le Cadeau du Cheval, then, you can click on panel #116 to see mine, Incitatus. There are sooo many beautiful panels on this mural, it must be such a site to behold in person. One day . . .

Okay, gotta go, but please contact me if you have any comments at info@carolerodrigue.net , or post them here. I sure would love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading this and we’ll see you soon!

The Horse Gift Unveiled!

Well, this is it; the day that we’ve all been waiting for! Today the Mural Mosaic latest mural, The Horse Gift, is unveiled at the Spruce Meadows Masters.

You may recall that a few months ago, I was immersed in creating a panel for this grand project; one of many artists to be invited to create a panel. When put together, the panels form a large image of a galloping horse, while each panel is also a unique work of art celebrating the horse. There are some incredible works of art in this mural, so be sure to take the time to click on each one to see a larger version. Mine is located on the right opposite the horse’s muzzle.

We’ve been told that prints and books will be available of the complete mural.

Although I’ve had grave misgivings about perhaps not having understood how to create the panel to fit into the mural whole, seeing it all together goes a long way to erase that fear. I am very proud to have been invited to participate as one “of the world’s finest equine artists” and look forward to what grand events may ensue as a result. The touring schedule has still not been published, but it’s very possible that this huge mural may come to a horse event near you. If it does, I urge you to see it in person for an unforgettable experience. I only hope that I can do the same.

Aug 31 – Dog Commission Phase I

So how does a commission happen? The usual procedure is that I’m approached by someone who has seen my work online, and they have a desire to have a painting done in my “style”, yet with their animals in the composition.

This two-dog commission came to me that way, after handing my postcard-business card out along the way. The pile of photos to the left are the requested imagery I need to create a composite image of what the client wants. I seldom have a “perfect” image from which to work, and one of my strengths is design–the ability to create a good composition from a multitude of source material. It is a worthy skill to acquire, and skill it is…. anyone can get it with enough practice!

The initial sketch on the canvas is below. I’ve placed the two dogs with the characteristic pose that the client wants, and I’ve quickly drawn in with a brush the placement. I did do a small thumbnail sketch to define the negative space around the dogs–again, designing the composition. The client hasn’t seen this yet. This stage would only confuse, with no value contrast to help the non-artist “see” the direction I’m going.

The shadow in the image on the top is my easel. More tomorrow!

On another note, one of my two panels is in place on the Mural Mosaic of the Horse, in process. I had panels 216 and 136, but although they have both, only one is viewable in the assemblage.

The official unveiling of the completed mural will be on September 3. You can see the almost finished mural–a combination of over 300 equine artists’ collaboration at this link:

Saratoga Study ~ Paddock Eye, 5 x 7 Oil on Panel

Oil painting of a Thoroughbred horse in the paddock. Copyright Linda Shantz, all rights reserved.

Well, I’m not sure it’s worth the hype, but this is the piece I’ve been wanting to post for a few days. It’s been a reminder how hard it is to get a good capture of a smaller painting – one of those challenges I admit I haven’t quite figured out yet! This little painting is 5 x 7 on shellacked masonite. It has an interesting gloss to it, which of course didn’t help with the photography. I think I’ve found the scanner I’m going to order, so this will be one of the first things I test when I get it!

This painting is a quick study from a photo I took on my recent Saratoga trip. Horses’ eyes are much portrayed by equine artists, but who can blame us? They say so much. I love the slightly wild look of this horse, the anticipation of the race before him. As someone who has accompanied many horses to the paddock, I know it can be a pretty stressful place – for both horses and handlers! Getting a horse from the barn to the gate sometimes seems to take longer than the months of training that precede race day!

One day soon I’ll have to catch everyone up on some of the news I need to share, but in the meantime, this will have to do! One bit I’ll mention here – next week, the Mural Mosaic’s Le Cadeau du Cheval will be revealed at the Spruce Meadows Masters’ Tournament. It’s not looking like I’m going to make it there, unfortunately. There are more panels up on the grid now, and they’ve adjusted the colours. Unfortunately those adjustments have left my purple panel looking very black! Can’t say I’m very happy about that, but on the plus side, my neighbour has been revealed – none other than a painting of William Shatner, Canadian icon. While I grew up with brothers addicted to Star Trek, my personal affection is for his “covers” of some popular songs, and the work he’s done with Ben Folds (surprise, surprise!). If you get the chance, look for So In Love (with Ben Folds) or his cover of Common People. Too funny!

Okay, time to go feed the “kids!”
