"One last glance" WIP & other news by Debbie Flood

I guess it is time to update you all on where I’ve been! One word: Studio! This is the newest watercolor I have been working on all week. This is “One last glance” 17 x 21 inches. I’m really lovin’ the glow that is going on in this painting. I’m hoping that this will be done by the end of September to submit with the “Big sky dreams” watercolor that I recently (almost) finished. I just have an area of detail that needs to be worked on in that one.

I’ve added another set of child a day paintings to my blog for the 2 for 1 sale. “Her painted pony” and “Her favorite horse” are being offered. Here is the link for those: http://debbieflood.blogspot.com/p/child-day-watercolors-2-for-1-sale.html

I’m not sure if I updated you on this other news: My profile was approved to be in the Directory of Artists on the Southwest Art Magazine’s Website. That’s a bit of fun news. http://www.southwestart.com/artists/artist_spotlight/3412

I received news that “Grumpy draft” and “Lift off” both watercolors, have been accepted into the Draft Horse Classic, Art at the Classic, Grass Valley CA. That exhibit takes place Sept. 23, 24, 25, 26, 2010

The 19th Annual Breckenridge Fine Art’s Exhibit opens tomorrow, Saturday August 28, 2010 with a reception from 6-8:30pm. My Watercolor “Back in the saddle” is in this exhibit. Breckenridge, Texas. Their website is http://www.breckenridgefineart.org I’m under the impression that the exhibit will be online on their website too, but don’t hold me to that.

I also have a work in the “Down East sails up town” exhibit in Bangor, Maine, hosted by the byDesign Gallery, Bangor, Maine. Works from more than 200 artists are in 10 different venues in the downtown area. I haven’t been given a list yet as to which building my painting is in. The watercolor painting “If walls could speak, Fort Knox” is in this exhibit.

I also have a watercolor of Common Eiders at the Project Puffin Center on Main Street, Rockland, Maine for their Summer Seabird Art show and sale to benefit the Puffins off the coast of Maine. That exhibit runs until October 2010.

Saturday August 28, 2010 is the last day of the Union State Fair, Union Maine. I have six paintings in this venue and will be picking those up this weekend.

Thank you for reading my posts and following along on my artistic journey. It is becoming a very fun journey, and I am enjoying sharing it with you. You may also pass the news along and my blog to family and friends if you wish. Thanks!

Have a great weekend!

‘One last glance’ Cowboy driving cattle, watercolor by Debbie Flood

It seems I’ve been hiding out for awhile. I’ve been held up in my studio, painting, painting, painting! I try to leave the computer alone, as much as possible. I check my emails, messages, and a few of my social media, but it is sparringly for now. This new watercolor painting is 17 x 21 inches. Pretty big for me, after doing so many 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 portraits! I haven’t shared this painting until now. I wanted to make sure I still liked it and wasn’t going to set it aside from having ruined it! I’m still liking it, so I’ll share the progress so far. Please keep in mind when viewing this image that the studio was losing daylight, as I worked later into the afternoon on this. Which means a darker photograph. The image here, above, is a cropped detail of the painting so that details can be seen better. It is a bit blurry, I think from the fading light in the studio tonight. I painted the sky a combination of darker yellows. It gives a really nice atmospheric attitude! It really didn’t photograph well, so you’ll just have to imagine, until I get a better photo during the day light. I hope your week has been going well! Something kinda cool for me, my profile was approved to be on the Southwest Art Magazine Website under their Artists Directory! You can check that out here: http://www.southwestart.com/artists/artist_spotlight/3412 Happy trails! Debbie Debbie Flood, Artist. ‘Big sky dreams’ Watercolor by Debbie Flood

I’ve just about finished this watercolor ‘Big sky dreams’ 14 x 20. I have signed it, even though there may be a little bit more detail picked at, to finish it.

I’ve added a page here on my blog for my 5 x 7 Watercolor paintings ‘Painting a child a day’. This page contains the mini paintings in sets. They are now being offered 2 for 1, $100.00 plus $8.00 shipping in the USA.
I hope you have time to check them out. The link is in the top navigation bar on this blog. I’ll also include the link to that page if you have trouble navigating
http://debbieflood.blogspot.com/p/child-day-watercolors-2-for-1-sale.html

I’ll be posting a set every day, Monday through Friday. You can mix and match also, just send me an email and I can easily send an email paypal bill to you for the specified paintings.

I’ll be going to the Artist reception on Saturday August 21, 2010 in Bangor, Maine in Pickering square for the ‘Down East sails up town’ by the byDesign Art Gallery, 10-2pm.

Today I entered six paintings into the Union Maine State Fair.
I’ve got paintings all over the place, ha ha…Texas, Bangor Maine & Union Maine.

‘Big sky dreams’ Watercolor progress & painting deadlines

Good afternoon, it’s has been a while since I have updated you all, I know. Last week I found this opportunity to submit three works to an Exhibit in Texas. But, we’ve all heard how Texas likes things to be big, well, I didn’t have any works that met the size requirements. So I have been working on new works for this venue. Today’s image is a watercolor, Big sky dreams 14 x 20 inches. This is the 1st painting that I have started for this exhibit, and it is still a work in progress. I would like to get at least one more finished for it, before the September deadline. Because of this deadline, I am limiting my time on the computer, especially the social media groups.

On another note: Saturday the 21st I will be at the byDesign Gallery reception 10-2pm downtown Bangor, Maine. Friday night is a preview sale, Saturday is the meet the artist reception and Sunday at noon will finish up Saturday’s festivities. My watercolor If walls could speak, Fort Knox will be on exhibit in this show & sale. The exhibit is “Down East sails up town” and runs from August 21 – October 2, 2010. More info can be found on their website http://www.bydesignartgallery.com

Friday, the 20th I plan on taking my son’s sculpture and a few paintings of mine to the Union State Fair, Union, Maine.

This last weekend, Saturday, I had a booth show at Lincolnville Maine “Art at the beach”. Sunday I was at a local horse show where I got a few good reference photos for paintings.

My watercolor “Back in the saddle” is on it’s way to Breckenridge Texas to the 19th annual Breckenridge Fine Art Museum Exhibit and sale. Dates are August 24 – September 25, 2010. http://www.breckenridgefineart.org

Thank you for following along and have a great Tuesday!

Bluebonnet Longhorn Mama 9 – University of Texas mascot bevo

8 X 10 Oil on Canvas
SOLD Commission
send me an email for YOURS!

Years ago I swore I would not paint bluebonnets like every other Texas oil painter. However, they were so gorgeous last year, I couldn’t resist – and of course I had to put a cow or horse in the painting. As a result I have sold nearly every one I have painted with requests for more standing in line.
This is my favorite of Ron’s cows that roam our pasture outside my studio window. This cow has had 3 pretty babies and never needs help raising them. Her horns are formidable, too, and she knows how to use them.
The lady who commissioned this painting lives in Florida and WISHES she could live in Texas. Occasionally I find myself longing for the coast – my favorite vacations as a child were on the beach – but then I look out my window and wonder why I would ever want to leave. Doesn’t make sense, does it?

Bones and Skulls

As some of you might remember…I have been contemplating doing a series of still life photos of animal skulls, bones and horns/antlers. I have collected some great objects to work with. (although always looking for more) I have never really done much with still life photography. I do know that I will work in B&W and with natural light. So I have been trying to envision how I want to do these. I now have two pretty strong ideas about what I want to try…but each entails some advance building. For one…I need to find a place that I can build a large sandbox. My back yard is not big enough. I need to have it so that it is like a beach…large open area with strong sunlight. And I will need to be able to cover it in between photo sessions. For the other I need to build an armature of a clamp type thing on a portable boom arm. So that I can clip the bone and kind of suspend it to be able to photograph just a portion of it floating in front of a backdrop. Maybe a stand like what my son has for his cymbals on his drum set. An adjustable boom arm and duct tape an alligator clip to the end. It has to be able to hold the bones without crushing them. And need one strong enough to hold heavier ones too. Hmm….might need two. I will be shooting these with my 2 1/4 camera I think. Funny how eager I am to get started…but this designing and building thing has me stuck. Life of an artist.

On my way in a few minutes to drop off a giclee print from one of my recent Spec Photo Shoots. (still needs a new name for this) I am very excited that this print turned out so beautifully. It is the first I have had done from my 2 1/4 negatives.

“Legs of a Dancer”

I have another print from the Quarry Hill Farm Arabians spec shoot being done now and should be ready to deliver in the next two weeks.

It seems like this idea is a welcome one. I am headed to Texas in November to visit good friend and colleague Lyne Raff, the publisher/editor of http://www.arthorsemagazine.com . I mentioned it last night on Facebook and now have a bunch of people down there asking about my coming to them to do spec photos of their horses. So if you are in the Dallas, Houston or Beaumont areas…or even farther afield and want me to come…let me know! I have always dreamed of traveling the world photographing horses as I go. Looks like Texas in November will be the start of fulfilling that dream! Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any interest in my coming to photograph your horse. We can discuss all the possible ways to make this happen.

Tomorrow I am off on a new adventure. I will tell you all about that next week! A good reason to come back! Please feel free to share my blog with your friends who might be interested in the life of a Fine Art Photographer with a love of horses!

Longhorn Bluebonnet Mama 6 revisited

I did NOT like this painting when I first posted it, but I put it up for your inspection nevertheless. It continued to mock me though. “Fix me. Fix me”. So I did. The colors were all wrong and I did not stick to my palette. In addition, the point of view was not consistent with the horizon. I like this one better.

Bee update:
After misty, coldness all day Monday and part of Tuesday, today has dawned bright and sunny with the bees taking off as soon as the sun hit the hive. We have situated them at the back end of the garden facing East where the sun hits the hive as soon as it’s up. I have left the collard greens even though they are way past harvest, because they are covered with yellow flowers that the local wild bees love.
They still have nothing to eat in the hive yet, so per Pete’s instruction, I attached a quart jar feeder on the front filled with a 50% sugar water solution. They have consumed half of it already.

While watching them yesterday, I observed them defending the hive from an enemy (not me!). I have read that other bees and insects and even mammals will try and steal honey which is one reason to keep the opening into the hive small – easier for them to defend.
While observing them coming and going yesterday afternoon, I saw a sudden “commotion” just inside the opening and suddenly a group of 6 or 8 bees squeezed out with a insect that looked like a bee but darker and slightly bigger clenched in the middle. Several bees quickly stung the intruder and dumped him over the landing edge. Bees can only sting once and they die because they leave their stinger in their victim, so those bees died defending their home. Such heroics! I could make an analogy with our military folks, but I think that’s unnecessary – I tell every person I see in uniform that they are my hero…

Isaiah 5:21-23 (New International Version)

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
and clever in their own sight.

22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine
and champions at mixing drinks,

23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,
but deny justice to the innocent.

The Bluebonnets are in full bloom here in Texas and the rain we are getting tonight will make them even better!
I have had a number of requests for bluebonnet paintings and I have quite a few planned – but it may be Christmas before I get them all painted. Keep watching for more – different styles, different palettes.
Photo is Dandy and PJ along our driveway. There are a few bluebonnets in their pasture and they do avoid eating them, so I hope the flowers will spread.

Spring WAS here yesterday and disappeared this morning behind a humongous cold front full of wind and freezing precipitation. Hopefully it is the last Arctic blast and I can pack away the tomato covers. Tonight they sleep all covered up, though.Ron’s cows are having babies – 5 down and 2 to go, and so far they are all healthy and VERY photogenic. We just got back from fishing down south in Matagorda Bay – the weather cooperated one day of the 4, and we managed to catch 4 red fish and one nice trout and tossed back as many. It wasn’t as good as past Spring Breaks, but we did better than anyone else on the Bay, so I can’t complain. I haven’t painted much lately – instead I have been drawing. Just drawing, which is what I do when the painting muse abandons me. I can draw pretty well, and it reinforces my confidence somehow. Matthew 16:2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather for the sky is red’”.

The Painting:  Rough scrapes of color prepare the base of this painting. Overlays of acrylic then create the vision of the horse. This one was painted in 2007.  I may try to do one this week that retains this sense but in my current style. It is important that an artist explore and continue to learn and grow with in their journey.  It is also important to be original.  A sense of style is unique to each of us that paint, and often through either workshops or straight copy imitation, we see pieces of our own work showing up in the internet in the works of others.

The Painting: The musing of color so small is a switch for me. Doing this small paintings truly enable me to see what is possible for the larger pieces. If I were working large I would not have patterned colors quite like they are here. The next step is to paint large and see what happens.
