The Painting:  Rough scrapes of color prepare the base of this painting. Overlays of acrylic then create the vision of the horse. This one was painted in 2007.  I may try to do one this week that retains this sense but in my current style. It is important that an artist explore and continue to learn and grow with in their journey.  It is also important to be original.  A sense of style is unique to each of us that paint, and often through either workshops or straight copy imitation, we see pieces of our own work showing up in the internet in the works of others.

The Painting: The musing of color so small is a switch for me. Doing this small paintings truly enable me to see what is possible for the larger pieces. If I were working large I would not have patterned colors quite like they are here. The next step is to paint large and see what happens.

The Painting: There is this feeling of coming together occasionally when you are working on a painting. The first step was a light watery layer of yellow acrylic. Then as that dried, a sketch of the positioning of the horse and then the colors begin to fall into place. Each one is applied with a knife pulling and contending against each other to find a position. There seems to come a time with art that it begins to be feeling and not intention. That is where I try to take my students, to the point where the inner child-like creativity oozes out controlled in slight limits by the knowledge base and principles of design and color. Within each composition lies areas of indisputable strength and might… and of course areas of the opposite of weakness and vulnerability.

The Thought: I received my first email today of someone that was not comfortable with my words of faith in my blog. My initial reaction was … so don’t read it. They were of different religious beliefs and took offense that I tie my work with my love for the Lord. So if for some reason you do not want to see the thought on your screen, I do have an alternate place for you to save as a favorite: http://texascontemporaryartist.blogspot.com. Here you can view only the art work and not my words of faith. I might not post there every day, but will try hard.

Vacation is upon us for one week, but Terry is still working on our bathroom. I am hoping it might make some headway this week. There is something about “trucking” down the hall to the hall bath in the middle of the night that is not my favorite.

I want to share with you that the Artists of Texas aka Daily Painters of Texas, has their new site up. www.artistsoftexas.org. It is such a pleasure working with so many professional artists as we weave together a community on the internet. We have scheduled our first show in October of this year with The Dutch Art Gallery here in Dallas. I think we have over 30 members right now.
For me the blessing has been getting to know better the Daily Painters from Texas on the main DP site by Micah Condon. www.dailypainters.com. It was from here we began with the Texas members and grew forward. Many of these artists I only knew by name and artwork. Now to have a working relationship with many of them has been an honor.

I am off to pack paintings… may you be blessed to be a blessing today.

Brady’s Portrait Is Finished

Brady

The Blancett family delayed their Father’s Day celebration until the family could all be together for the occasion.� Reeny said that Steve was overwhelmed with his gift, loves Brady’s portrait just as it is and does not want any further changes. It is in the process of being framed�and will soon occupy a place of honor in the Blancett home.�

Bill and I were in Wyoming much of June. The weather was gorgeous, ranging from 65 to 75 degrees in the day and the nights were delightfully cool.� It was such a shock to the system to return home to 103 degree heat!� That is just one of the reasons we are planning to relocate to Wyoming as soon as we are able to do so. “Yes,” in answer to many of my friends’ questions, I�DO know the winters are cold and snowy there!� Yet I can think of nothing more enticing than the opportunity to explore the National Parks in search of reference material all summer long, then watch the snow from inside a studio which overlooks the mountains as�I paint throughout the winter.

In addition to my commissioned work I look forward to painting western and wildlife art once again.��It has been many years since�I have had the time, and�I was greatly inspired by the museums and galleries of Northwest Wyoming.

The Painting: Another archival piece from 2005. I did paint yesterday, but I did not take pictures yet. I am about a half a day behind. This is an abstract oil which to me was a sunflower bursting out in rays.

The Thought: I am back to tough love and the things we face in life. Tough love for ourselves and our sins as well as for those we love. When you read the verse above it seems simple enough. This is after Adam and Eve had an afternoon break of sharing an apple in the garden. They know they are naked and they are ashamed so their Father takes care of them out of love and provides clothes….

ahah but wait, clothes? From where? Animals skins? That means the first animal gave it’s life for man and man’s stupidity of not listening to the rules. Someone/something else suffers because of our choices. The fresh dirt of earth is now newly blood stained with innocent blood. The animal committed no sin and did not deserve to die.

God took the skins of the animals and fashioned clothes for Adam and Eve. So woman was not the first fashion designer. …Then God dressed them. Just as a mother would dress a child before sending them to school, God protectively dressed Adam and Eve, and sent them out into the world, forever banished from the garden.

God’s love protects us despite our inappropriate daily choices. Even when we seem to mean well, we step off the path and often struggle to find our way back. God’s Love protects us.

“Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly, and revere your God. I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:32

The Painting: Acrylic Overlays in about seven layers. Dense thick paint and high glass varnish combine to finish off this unique composition.

The Thought: We were driving down Forest Lane on our way home from Whole Foods and I saw the sign outside the Unity Church, “HAPPY HOUR” . Of course it was referring to the church service on Sunday.

Then I was reading a magazine with little one liners that said, “Do you know what Happy Hour for the elderly is? An afternoon nap. Life not only begins at forty, it begins to show. Some of the other one liners were: You don’t stop laughing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop laughing.

It seems like the older Terry and I get, the more we forget our age. ( in more ways than one…either doing more than we should or truly just forgetting how old we are!) Somehow our inside brain thinks twenties but our body doesn’t match up at all. I just realized recently I had crossed over to the ‘other side’ when I was examining our ‘future’ retirement situation for that long term planning I spoke of yesterday in the blog. I had mentioned to Patrick Lowe, our financial adviser, http://www.fa.ml.com/lowe_group (HE IS THE BEST, look him up!) that I could still teach school if I had to. Good gracious, I will be 57 this year. Why would I ever want to do that?

What are you suppose to be like in your sixties? What is “Sixty”? I can hearing you screaming OLD at me, but my mom will be 80 in a few weeks and she isn’t old… she is older, but not old. She is wiser, but not old. She is in full bloom with every intense beauty within her bursting out.

As we grow older our faith takes us by the hand and we walk a tiny bit slower in our journey. It is faith telling us “And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His spirit, who lives in you.” Romans 8:11. In a sense it suggests that in those closing years of our journey here on earth, that our mortal life will be infused with special energy from God’s spirit. I can hope!

We can hear a whisper as hope does jump into the scene. “because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.” Romans 5:2 Hope give us the assurance of a glorious future.

Generally society here in the US does not put much value into our elderly. The older we get the more diminished and devalued we are. I can see it all around me. I can’t fix it. I can only continue my journey with Terry in faith and hope for each new day.

No matter where you are in age, remember those older than you today and call someone you love that is older and share some joy.

The Painting: This is a second painting I was working on when Barbie was visiting. I finished it up yesterday. It began with a bottom layout in acrylic for value placement. From this point there are layers of oils piled on top using a wide brush.

The Thought: Not sure of what it is, but I have been “down” for two days straight. Hopefully today will be better. Anytime I ate or drank water it felt like a tightening in my stomach, like an old fashioned tummy ache. Did not get to go visit our best friends in Mt Vernon yesterday…so I am a bit sad. Hopefully today I can eat again.

Terry continues to rip out the bathroom in our bedroom. The shower is completely torn out and tonight I think he intends to pull out the toilet and the rest of the floor. I suggested he stay on schedule because getting up at night makes it hard to remember to stumble down the hall to the other bathroom. He is actually working today. Normally he is off on Mon/Tues but there are impt meetings at the airport and so he works 7 days straight. It will be a long long week for sure.

The baby has begun to babble and giggle. Stacey phoned late yesterday afternoon to let us hear her laugh. She was watching the food network.

I have been studying in the bible where David is taking over from Saul. There are so many events happening around those two men, it is difficult to keep up with them both. There are many players on each side of the turnover of power, and there are many deaths.

In comparison our lives seem simple with out the physical battles of warfare surrounding us and the every day anxiety of survival. Each battle has a reason in our lives. If we didn’t experience the battles, we would not be stronger. Out of each blooms a grace from Him. His good is there to pour out into your life.

There are times you cannot find goodness or grace in your life. That is when I would remind you to seek Psalm 20.

Psalm 20

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.

3 May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings.

and make all your plans succeed.

5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious
and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.

The Painting: A commission painting of two dogs, in the later years for a special lady…a gift from a special man in her life.

The Thought: When I think of dogs many things goes through my head. They are a member of our family, they are always there giving love and companionship and they are protectors. When you are in their presence, they are there for you 100 percent.

God is that way too. Old and corny I know, but GOD spelled backwards is dog. God is with you all the time. God is your protector all the time. Be secure in the knowledge that He has your front and your back sides at all times. Have faith to know He will provide you with everything you need to accomplish what needs to be done today. Be inspired by Him. Be protected by Him.

You are safe with God.

Thursday, my high school friend, Barbie, came to visit. She was in Dallas visiting her mom and sister and she came to paint with me. I have pictures to share. She did not finish her painting so next year, same time, we will paint again. She is one of those friends you wish you could grow old with close by. We never miss a beat when we see each other each year and she is like the sister of my soul.

The Painting: This is all acrylic. I started with a charcoal sketch of the horses and then I began to see shadows and colors. Cross Hatching the palette knife gave it a woven feeling and that is where I saw the flowers…wild flowers.

The Thought: Almost late for the day for me…busy catching up on email…

Reflecting on the bible verse above… and tying it into the painting is always a start for me. Where do you go or what do you seek when you are sad or in need? Sometimes a good walk will clear your head enough that you can get your brain back in balance.

We all need comfort in our lives. It is this part of living that happens to all of us, the feeling let down by someone or something in your life… the feeling that you want to run away or hide under the covers. Perhaps that instinct is not bad, the under the covers instinct. This is the time to take an inward journey to the core of your being. That is were you will find God.
That is where you will be aware of His great compassion and love for you. God will strengthen you and reassure you as you become uplifted by communing with Him.

When you realize that this source is never ending, you begin to realize you can comfort others around you. God gives you the gift of compassion and empathy to speak to others in need. He will give you the words to comfort them.

I am lifting you up today in my prayers, that each of you will find comfort to fill whatever hurt is there.

I have a visitor today to the studio. My high school friend Barbara is in visiting from Salt Lake City. This will be the third summer she has come to paint with me. She has a natural way with the brush and I cannot wait to see what will become of today and her painting.

The Painting: Rough overlays of Acrylic as this painting evolved through many hours yesterday and early this morning. It began as a horizontal painting with three horses running at a slight angled. From there it pushed into a single horse, fired with flare and energy.

The Thought:

“Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option”

My daughter sent me this yesterday and even this morning I am staring at it reflectively. It is pretty deep when you think about it. Comes back to the “take care of yourself” issue that so many of us do not do, especially us mothers. God seems to gift us with the need to fix things for everyone around us. As we enable them we become their answer, or their option.

What would you like to do for you today? What is something you have dreamed of getting around to? Now is the moment to seize it and do it.

“For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” Proverbs 1:32-33

THE PAINTING TODAY: This is a painting done several years ago. I have a huge mess here after our big storm yesterday and scrambling to post this morning. This is a palette knife painting with warm colors on a field of blue and green. The contrast is there, but the feeling of the composition is one of calmness. Hence I named it “with grace”.

My Thought for Today:

Yesterday was NOT a typical day at all and this “thought” is not typical either! I had an opening last night at a new super doctor clinic in town with my art work…. and was looking to a calm day of painting and getting ready for the show.

It had begun raining and storming on Wednesday night… and all through the night it rained and stormed. We thought it was to be a passing squall line… but no.. it was not. Thursday morning dawned to more more rain. Terry left for work about 5:30 am and I was doing bookwork in the studio and cleaning up paints. Morgan left for work at 9 and I checked the radar and realized the storm was growing. By 10:30 the lightening was so severe it was literally crashing outside every window .. POP POP POP… and I heard bang thud on the roof. Then the roof started leaking in the garden room…I began to sense urgency as I raised the blinds on our 8 ft south window in the bedroom and realized the rain was hitting it full force from the south. The storm was out of the north… it was a micro burst of reverse winds and rain. The power kept going on and off. I went to the side window by the baby grand and the water was up on the window sill. I than hurried to the front door and found the front planter box (Which is huge) totally holding water and the water trying to back fill into the house.

Grabbing a bucket, I began bailing out the flower bed in the midst of the storm. It was filling as fast as I was bailing. I put several frantic calls into Terry who did not answer the phone and went through a phone contact at his work to find him. When he arrived home we were both out in the storm trenching ditches to pull the water away from the house where it was up over where it should be. That took us almost three hours. We were both drenched and very muddy. This is work to be finished this next week…instead of starting our bathroom renovations.

At the bottom of our hill (We are two houses from the bottom) the streets were flooded almost up to the doors of the houses and there were cars submerged. I could not take pictures in the rain because I was so busy trying to save our house.

The back yard looked worse. We have huge trees that lost limbs bigger than most small trees. I think that is what hit the roof and bounced off. Annie dog hide in the shower in our bathroom and Paddy was glued to my side. This day will be filled with clean up.

We made the clinic opening and it was wonderful. Great food, folks and fun. Found out that the new clinic had flooded that morning before they even opened. The rain definitely got the best of the situation all the way around. The new clinic is HealthCareClinics.com here in Dallas. Open 7 days a week, 13 hours a day and they have OBGYN, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, CTScan, Xray, etc etc. They literally cover it all. The facility was designed for the task with over 46 exam rooms. It is unbelievable. It was an honor to have them purchase paintings for the new office.

We gave thanks over many times yesterday to God for sparing us from what could have happened. All of this is in His power and we know He will provide what we need for us to move forward. Remember those in the world today that are affected by storms. Many lose their homes from flooding…they lose their lives and all the human treasures they have stored. Bless them to remember that God has more for them and sometimes we have to lose to gain.

I could not take many pictures as the work was immediate need… but I took some after shots and pictures from the opening.

Brady

Brady’s portrait is being done in Pastels on Suede Board as a Father’s Day present. I love doing paintings that will be a surprise for some special occasion and hearing about the recipient’s response after the gift is opened!

I have begun by blocking in some basic colors and establishing the values. As always, everyone is invited to watch as the portrait develops to the point of blending and adding details. The reference photo is shown below. Doesn’t she have the sweetest face?
