Landis Valley in Winter

With the husband sick in bed and Zoe and I bored out of our minds, we decided to brave the cold weather and snow and head over to one of our favorite places, Landis Valley Museum. They are having their Winter Institute now so there are all sorts of things going on from learning to care for draft animals to blacksmithing. Zoe and I stopped and watched some of the students in the classes. But, we came for the animals and I got some great shots! I also got to cross off an item on my bucket list, scroll to the bottom to see!
Click on pictures for a larger view and don’t forget to leave me a comment and let me know which was your favorite!

Of mice and jack o’ lanterns…

You can get a lot accomplished when there’s several feet of snow outside your door and the husband is home to watch the wee one. I finished my previously mentioned owl on the pumpkin sculpture and painted two fun welcome signs, one with a black Percheron and some spring flowers and another with a jack o’ lantern and a mouse peeking out of the nose. I suppose they shall both make their way over to Ebay sooner or later!

My daughter, who just turned 4, attempted her first horse drawing this week (I am so proud). Thought I would share. This is a large drawing on a piece of oversized construction paper I taped to the wall. She said the horse has a “million legs” (yikes). There are also some fairies around, Tinker Bell is green and Silver Mist is flying by on the top right. Bother fairies are holding flowers and the large horse has a baby horse with it and a rider.

Don’t forget! The Penny Tree Auction starts this weekend. Proceeds will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Read more about this wonderful work of art here, on the PFATT BLOG. I donated a glittery unicorn heart ornament for the tree.

“Comforting a friend” Watercolor Painting Finished

I’ve recently finished “Comforting a friend” 13 x 14 Watercolor. This team is from a team of 6 Black Percherons. They have been out in the sun during the Summer months, so when I photographed them, they were bleached out to this pretty reddish bay color. I couldn’t resist the bounced orange and red light upon their coats and the emotions they portrayed on their faces, when interacting with one another.

Percheron

Haven’t been able to get much done lately with the holiday. Then I had to paint the laundry room since we bought a new washer and dryer – that room was disgusting and really needed it – but I lost another day painting. This week I will be working on some custom horse pendants (interested? they make great gifts). I also started a holiday Shire sign and have a horse and sleigh piece upstairs in my head I hope to complete. I was able to finish a nice Percheron Christmas sign that I just listed on ebay today – 3 day auction. It’s even available on an ornament in my Cafepress shop. Make sure you go through my direct link to save money. Ornaments make great gifts for your vet, farrier, barn owner, trainer, instructor, etc.!

I’ve always really loved this painting. It moves me. Be sure to click on it for a larger view and let me know if it moves you.
It’s called An Arab and His Horse in the Desert by Jean-Léon Gérôme (one of my very favorite artists).

The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire.

Bay Percherons Progress in Watercolor

Here is the progress as of today, Nov., 18th. This is a watercolor of Bay Percherons teamed together.
I’ve been posting the progress, you will find in older posts here on this blog.
I’m still liking this so far, so I guess I am doing ok on it! lol.
I’m working on getting that bouncing and reflective light that happens in the late afternoon evening. The day has been hot and bright and now it is cooling down and the glow of the setting sun bounces it’s orange colors around. I love that time of day.
Thanks for looking and reading,

“Slinging Mud” Receives an Award

I’m very pleased to announce that my Watercolor painting “Slinging mud” received Honorable Mention at the Draft Horse Classic, ‘Art at the Classic’ in Grass Valley, CA., during their exhibit & show in September of 2009.
There seems to have been a glitch somewhere along the line, as there was no ribbon with the painting while on exhibit and no ribbon or award list came home with the paintings in the box.

I was just recently made aware that my name had been on the award list, by another Equine artist that I admire, Yvonne Kitchen. She was at the exhibit with her award winning sculptures, and also took photos of the art. Thank you Yvonne!

This year, I’m told by the coordinator, that the fair grounds was handling the paperwork and that this is the 1st time they have switched who does what. So a little glitch. They expect next year to go much smoother with this process.
The Draft Horse Classic is a very pretigious event and draws in a large Draft Horse crowd with their Drafts, every September. It’s held on the Nevada County Fair Grounds. It’s a very big deal to just get a work of art acepted into the art exhibit, which I had two accepted. But then to find out I won an award was even sweeter!

The Bay Percheron Progress in Watercolors

Here is two stages of the progress on this watercolor of the Percherons. This top image was the progress on it from Saturday (Yesterday). Defining and finding shadow layouts. And enriching the right horse’s bridle. I also filled in with under painting on the face of the horse to the left.

This image, to the top here, shows work done on Sunday (today).  I had to laugh, when my husband looked at this last stage, he asked, “What have you done?”. Ha ha…he’s so funny! Detail is what I’ve done! Detail I say! And more layering of color. Watercolor is transparent and layering is the key to luminous glowing color! Look to the area to the left just over the horse’s rump. You should be able to see I darkened that green. Brought it up to the level of the dark green over the right horse’s rump! This frames them and pushes them into one another. I’ll also go into that left top corner too, with more dark. It will balance things a bit more. I also worked on getting the color, on those glowing orange reins, a little more ‘rich’. And defining the shadows on those so they pop up off the horses. And look to the muzzle and nostril of the horse to the left and you will see I also enhanced that area and made it ‘pop’ out a little more. It’s so fun to ’sculpt’ with the paint! Always remember, that if you want an item believable, make your brush strokes go in the direction of the object you are painting. Sculpt it. And use shadows to define shapes.

I hope you enjoyed this little update.

Dark Red Bay Percherons, New Watercolor

I’ve started a new Watercolor this week. This is how far I have come on this as of today. This image is 13 x 14 inches. I took the reference photo at a Draft Horse Show this past Summer. I took so many photos that day. These two were part of a six horse hitch of dark red bay Percherons. I decided to crop the image to get an intimate feeling with the two up front, leading the pack. I’m getting very addicted to this painting. I go to bed at night, thinking how I would love to work on it…but my lighting isn’t very good in the studio at night. Not for getting true colors anyways. I’ve been thinking about those lights that create daylight in the studio. I may do some research on those. But then…I would be tempted to stay up at all hours of the night painting! That might not be so good for me. I wouldn’t get much sleep and my family really wouldn’t like me then! So I work hard all day on it, get a good nights sleep and jump out of bed in the morning…rearing to go at this painting again!
I finished the grumpy draft horse. I haven’t photographed it yet. I’m waiting for the best lighting situation to get a true to color image. A client saw it in person tonight and she really liked it. I think it will be a popular image! Maybe a Giclee reproduction is in store for that painting. He’s such a moody, grumpy horse, with a tangled mane!

Thank you for following my Blog. I enjoy painting and I really enjoy showing them to you. Even better is when you like them enough to add them to your collection. That is the ultimate praise to give an artist.

Draft day

Trying to get back in the studio after some fun busy weekends away and getting hay in the barn and finished up this Percheron. She belongs to a friend who does carriage rides but this was definitely a day off for her. We had just returned with another team from a country drive and she was glad to see them back.
This original 5×7 matted (8×10) watercolor is available for $60 plus $5 S&H to the first emailer to lojomjnc@charter.net.
I am also offering 5×7 giclees for $10 plus $5 S&H.

Solstice composite – River Road Percherons

Here is a composite of the solstice shots I took yesterday. Enjoy. My fingers froze during the shoot, as I had forgotten my gloves. Ah well…all for art!

Tempest

The shadow Tempest, a Percheron Paint, cast in the early morning sunshine emphasized his strength and stature. Like a huge tree casting a cool shadow, Tempest seemed like he would be content if we all gathered our lawn chairs under his shade canopy. He’d simply calmly continue munching on the grass. Of course, we’d have to shift our seating arrangements as he moved along to different patches of grass….

And you wouldn’t want to be lounging around if he started showing off his cantering and galloping skills. Thundering around the outdoor arena, Tempest demonstrated that bulk plus power can be very impressive!

Tempest is owned by Lauren and her two daughters Erin, who trail rides with Tempest, and Gail, who rides dressage with him. Lauren wrote, “Tempest has been a spectacular horse for us and has livened up our barn. He loves to play and he definitely knows how handsome he is.”

Tempest is the seventh horse in the “Beautiful Horses of Michigan” series. Go to www.karenbrenner.com/beautiful_horses_of_michigan_gallery.html to see all the paintings completed in the series so far.

Artist Reference Photo DSC_9305

We attended a thrashing bee today and the highlight of the day for me, was watching this older horse teach his young team mate to handle all situations with aplomb! No matter what happened, the older team mate, was calm, giving the younger horse a good example to follow.

This photo of a Percheron Team is offered as an exclusive artist reference photo. Be the first to claim it!

Or see other photos of this Percheron team on my artist reference website. I’ll be uploading the remainder of the photos tonight.
