Open Studio Weekends

The paintings are all hung, everything is arranged–stop by my studio this weekend or next Nov. 28-29, and Dec. 5-6th, from 10am to 5pm.

I am at the far northeast edge of the Artist Open Studios of Northeast CT. That means I may not get as many visitors as some of the artists. For me, though, it is a welcome opportunity to take stock of the inventory, and spend a whole weekend (or two) in the studio, catching up on projects.

In hanging work for this weekend, I am realizing that the inventory is quickly outgrowing my space! You’ll have to come just to check out my bargain bin, an assortment of smaller paintings just waiting to find the right home. All the originals in the bargain bin are priced at just $75.

Windham Arts button wearers will get a free Horse Alphabet (or Cowman Numerals) poster for supporting Windham Arts.

The kitty up above is Pixel, of course. Lounging in a windowsill is his favorite summertime activity, and he likes to lie on his back or his side, and wiggle and squirm, showing off his furry chest and belly. This is an 11 x 14 oil on canvas.

“Bay with a Blaze” is an 8 x 10 oil on board. This horse was just shining in the evening sunlight of the Woodstock Fair. I like the shadow that his head casts on his neck.

Open Studio Day AND Folk Friday at Second April

Today was a fun day at the gallery– although most days at the gallery are fun! We had Open Studios soI brought a horse commission I am working on. I also got to meet with the owner of the cocker spaniels I just completed painting. She came to give her final approval. It was very nice to see she was pleased.

This evening was Folk Friday . Su Nimon,artist/graphic artist/musician/body worker is part of a singing duo called Caboodle. They provided a free concert while the gallery stayed open late. What a fun evening. There was a nice crowd and a very pleasant atmosphere.

I will include some photos of some of the other artist’s studios so you can get a feel for the variety of art available.

Open Studio Days

I am going to save my current WIP portraits for another day and instead show you today some recent photos of Open Studio days at my art studio in Canton. I am located on the second floor of a beautiful art gallery Second April Art Galerie. Just walking thru the gallery to my space is a treat as I get to see the new art that comes in. I often do my shopping there for gifts rather than spend money on things at the mall or walmart since I hate shopping at places like that. The lighting and piped in music gives me a headache! Why not support local artists? At the gallery they carry a wide range of orignal art in all price points. Last Christmas I bought some little pottery pieces for my kids to give to teachers. I think I paid 5.00 dollars for them and they were wonderful! I mention that so you know you don’t have to be a millionaire to support local artists.

My goals for Open Studio Days are two fold. One I am wanting to get used to using my space as a working studio. I do most of my painting at home but I think it is interesting to go into working studios. I love seeing the paint and art materials and the works in progress. I think it makes it more interesting and accessible and inviting when people feel apart of the creation of art. I believe we are all artists at heart so I love to encourage this feeling of accessiblity.

Second Reason: To give people a reason to keep coming back. We get large crowds of people into the gallery during First Fridays . I am wanting to invite people to come back when its not so crowded. You can browse, talk, linger… isn’t that what art is for? And its just good business sense to develop this kind of a relationship with the community. I love the face to face interaction. I also want people to know as artists we are not stuffy and exclusive… we are not wildly expensive… we are working with our hands and creating art to be enjoyed by all. Anyone who knows me knows I am as far from stuffy as one can get! :)

I love being a part of the art community that has a wide range of styles and mediums too – from the pottery I mentioned above to large abstract paintings to tiny little intricate pen and ink to chunky wood pieces to sleek metal to digital art to exquisitie oil paintings. I get inspired when I see the variety of people’s creativity and in a way helps me to keep focused on what I want to do. I see what others do and then I feel freed up to zone in on what I do with my art~ life~ ideas since being creative doesn’t only apply to artwork.

So please feel free to stop by during gallery hours (Tues- Sat. 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM) or during Open Studio Fridays or First Friday of each month. Saturday mornings during the summer months is a wonderful farmer’s market too.

For a country girl at heart I am finding lots of things to enjoy in the city too.

New Studio!

Second April Art Gallerie

In just a few days I will begin to move into my new art studio in Canton. I am moving down the hall from the ‘Annex’ of Second April Art Gallerie to the ‘Studios’. This is a wonderful location in a gorgeous art gallery in a vibrant active art community. Can you tell I am excited about this!!

My new studio address will be 324 Cleveland Ave. NW, #207 Canton, Ohio

My artwork will be on display and available for purchase anytime the gallery is open. With the added space I will be working in my studio more often and will certainly be there for First Friday Events, often doing a painting demo. If you’ve not been to a First Friday you need to! They are fantastic! Food, live music, activities for kids, live entertainment, art galleries, open art studios…. just a lot of fun. The plan is for me to be in my new spot for May First Friday! Hope to see you there!

Take care,
Sue Steiner

Canton Art Studio

Studio 222 in the Annex above Second April Art Gallerie

Art by Sue Steiner

We had November’s First Friday last night in Canton. I had just completed painting the walls in my studio so I am still working on finding spaces for everything. I want to put up some shelves for my mini paintings, notecards etc. and also a special spot for the ‘daily paintings’ from this blog. I also find an area in which I can show completed commissions and ‘work in progress’ pics of commissions is helpful.

This month and next is a very busy one at the gallerie and art community with Shop Hops scheduled most every weekend. Its fun to be part of this energy and enthusiasm. Last night the lively music from downstairs floated up thru the halls of the annex. Since the music this month was from a marching band I felt I was at a football game! The band marched down the street so it was very much like a parade. The crowds were enjoying themselves and its just an all around fun place to be.

Some of the things I plan on continuing or expanding on:

The drawing for a daily painting. I would like to continue that each month since it draws attention to the daily paintings and it reinforces in me why I am doing this exercise. I think they are a great learning tool and a way to challenge myself to grow as an artist. I think the same principles of breaking out of old patterns and challenging yourself can be applied in other areas of life. Art reflects life after all! I am including the people who responded from this blog in the drawing and like that idea too. I don’t want those of you following me in cyber space to feel left out! You are my inspirational fuel from First Friday to First Friday! If I know your watching I feel more inclinded to keep this up so thank you for your participation.

More education as far as commissions. I think this will be very helpful. It will help me so that I can communicate in words what usually comes to me visually and help people make decisions as far as art mediums and time frame expectations. I enjoy hearing about people’s pets and horses and as we all know they play an important role in our lives. I feel honored when people choose me to commemorate their pets or loved ones.

Its a small space so I have to be efficent and ‘clean’. I hate visual clutter and that is hard to avoid in a tight spot. Well now I have a game plan so I guess I need to get to work…..

Stayed tuned for the announcement on Monday for the daily painting drawing!

Daily Painting

I am still painting daily, only now it is the walls of my new studio! LOL! No where near as fun as painting horses or people on panels! Why I am such a messy painter, I don’t know either… I was thinking of that yesterday as I am trying to paint the trim and woodwork without slopping paint all over. For those of you in the area I am revamping my art studio in Canton getting ready for November’s First Friday. My walls will hopefully be freshly painted and I am redesigning my set up to maximize my space.

In addition to the daily paintings, watercolors and acrylics I also will have new ‘mini’ art, paintings on 4 x 5 canvases. They look great on a desk or counter and are a great way to collect affordable original art.
The oil painting you see above will be given away in a drawing for those stopping by my studio or blog. The watermark is not on the original. Submit your e-mail and I will draw a winner on Monday. You can do this privately by e-mailing me at artbysue@hotmail.com , leaving a comment here or stopping by my studio at 318 Cleveland Ave. Suite #222, Canton, Ohio. I am above Second April Art Gallerie on the corner of 4th and Cleveland or the Arcadia Grill entrance to the ‘annex’. If this is confusing just get to Second April Art Gallerie and follow the animal and equine art signs to my studio.

To Finish Yesterday’s Post….

I ran into serious problems posting the images of the kittens yesterday and finally gave it up and wrote to tech support. Turns out, doesn’t it figure, that it was something I had done with a setting that I shouldn’t have. But the reason I bring it up is to pass on how quick and great the tech support was! Three Cheers for WordPress!

So, since it’s the next day, here’s a new ART THOUGHT FOR THE DAY, one of my all-time favorites for truth and pithiness, from Edgar Degas, who knew a thing or two about painting:

“Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.”

NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS

Had a good turnout this year. Lots of nice people, many of them first time visitors. Here’s a photo of the studio ready to go, with Niki also ready to help with hosting. He appointed himself Official Escort To And From The Cars, much to the amusement of the attendees.

HOT OFF THE EASEL

Just finished this one yesterday. The reference was a print photo that I had been meaning to paint for ages. It’s important to see the warm tones in the snow leopard’s coat, which is similiar to polar bears. It’s an oil on canvas on board and is 24″x18″, so the head is life-sized or maybe a little larger. If you are interested in snow leopard conservation, check out the Snow Leopard Trust at www.snowleopard.org.
