The Horse Gift Unveiled!

Well, this is it; the day that we’ve all been waiting for! Today the Mural Mosaic latest mural, The Horse Gift, is unveiled at the Spruce Meadows Masters.

You may recall that a few months ago, I was immersed in creating a panel for this grand project; one of many artists to be invited to create a panel. When put together, the panels form a large image of a galloping horse, while each panel is also a unique work of art celebrating the horse. There are some incredible works of art in this mural, so be sure to take the time to click on each one to see a larger version. Mine is located on the right opposite the horse’s muzzle.

We’ve been told that prints and books will be available of the complete mural.

Although I’ve had grave misgivings about perhaps not having understood how to create the panel to fit into the mural whole, seeing it all together goes a long way to erase that fear. I am very proud to have been invited to participate as one “of the world’s finest equine artists” and look forward to what grand events may ensue as a result. The touring schedule has still not been published, but it’s very possible that this huge mural may come to a horse event near you. If it does, I urge you to see it in person for an unforgettable experience. I only hope that I can do the same.

Aug 31 - Dog Commission Phase I

So how does a commission happen? The usual procedure is that I’m approached by someone who has seen my work online, and they have a desire to have a painting done in my “style”, yet with their animals in the composition.

This two-dog commission came to me that way, after handing my postcard-business card out along the way. The pile of photos to the left are the requested imagery I need to create a composite image of what the client wants. I seldom have a “perfect” image from which to work, and one of my strengths is design–the ability to create a good composition from a multitude of source material. It is a worthy skill to acquire, and skill it is…. anyone can get it with enough practice!

The initial sketch on the canvas is below. I’ve placed the two dogs with the characteristic pose that the client wants, and I’ve quickly drawn in with a brush the placement. I did do a small thumbnail sketch to define the negative space around the dogs–again, designing the composition. The client hasn’t seen this yet. This stage would only confuse, with no value contrast to help the non-artist “see” the direction I’m going.

The shadow in the image on the top is my easel. More tomorrow!

On another note, one of my two panels is in place on the Mural Mosaic of the Horse, in process. I had panels 216 and 136, but although they have both, only one is viewable in the assemblage.

The official unveiling of the completed mural will be on September 3. You can see the almost finished mural–a combination of over 300 equine artists’ collaboration at this link:

Saratoga Study ~ Paddock Eye, 5 x 7 Oil on Panel

Oil painting of a Thoroughbred horse in the paddock. Copyright Linda Shantz, all rights reserved.

Well, I’m not sure it’s worth the hype, but this is the piece I’ve been wanting to post for a few days. It’s been a reminder how hard it is to get a good capture of a smaller painting - one of those challenges I admit I haven’t quite figured out yet! This little painting is 5 x 7 on shellacked masonite. It has an interesting gloss to it, which of course didn’t help with the photography. I think I’ve found the scanner I’m going to order, so this will be one of the first things I test when I get it!

This painting is a quick study from a photo I took on my recent Saratoga trip. Horses’ eyes are much portrayed by equine artists, but who can blame us? They say so much. I love the slightly wild look of this horse, the anticipation of the race before him. As someone who has accompanied many horses to the paddock, I know it can be a pretty stressful place - for both horses and handlers! Getting a horse from the barn to the gate sometimes seems to take longer than the months of training that precede race day!

One day soon I’ll have to catch everyone up on some of the news I need to share, but in the meantime, this will have to do! One bit I’ll mention here - next week, the Mural Mosaic’s Le Cadeau du Cheval will be revealed at the Spruce Meadows Masters’ Tournament. It’s not looking like I’m going to make it there, unfortunately. There are more panels up on the grid now, and they’ve adjusted the colours. Unfortunately those adjustments have left my purple panel looking very black! Can’t say I’m very happy about that, but on the plus side, my neighbour has been revealed - none other than a painting of William Shatner, Canadian icon. While I grew up with brothers addicted to Star Trek, my personal affection is for his “covers” of some popular songs, and the work he’s done with Ben Folds (surprise, surprise!). If you get the chance, look for So In Love (with Ben Folds) or his cover of Common People. Too funny!

Okay, time to go feed the “kids!”

The Miracle Man

Painting of Josh Lyons with a horse. Copyright Carol Rodrique 2008, all rights reserved. Miracle Man
16 x 20 original acrylic on masonite

Here’s the completed painting from the image I’d posted last week. This is a painting of Josh Lyons and the 2 yr old colt he’d trained back in June up in Quebec. I was inspired to paint this after watching this scene unfold. Josh was signing autographs and talking with people after the long day’s session. The horse was broke and just following Josh everywhere, staying by his side, keeping his full attention on him at all times. Then the colt began to nuzzle Josh, resting his head on his shoulders, and just being a real baby. Josh turned and began nuzzling right back, and even giving a kiss or two. Needless to say, to me, this scene summed up the days work. A horse was trained, and trust was gained, on both ends (~sniff~). After witnessing Josh’s amazing abilities with horses that weekend, I was convinced, he was indeed a miracle man with horses, and that’s where the title came from.

By the way, I just fell in love with that horse. Boy, to have a horse like that some day . . .

And just another reminder, the countdown’s on for the unveiling of the Cadeau du Cheval mural at Spruce Meadows, Sept. 3-7!!! Coincidence of coincidences, Lewis Lavoie painted a panel of John Lyons in the mural. It’s pretty amazing, and there’s also a pretty amazing painting of Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner! Being a Star Trek fan, I find it pretty darned bang on! Check it out folks, http://www.muralmosaic.com/Cadeau.html Live long and prosper, eh! Now that was spoken like a true Cannuck . . . ;-)

In Legend and Story

Le Cadeau du Cheval mural mosaic panel, before and after. Copyright Heather Anderson, all rights reserved.

For weeks I followed the progress on a huge horse mural - the Horse Gift (Le Cadeau Du Cheval) that will be premiered in September at Spruce Meadows. It totally fascinated me that the artists involved were taking what amounted to abstract panels and turning them into horse paintings, that when put together, will form a new image .
But I couldn’t take part - I had too much work, too much “stuff” happening that had to be dealt with. There was no way I could do a mural panel - was there?
One by one, the impediments slipped away and suddenly, I realized that I would be able to do one after all, and I wrote and asked if there was anything left for me. Fortunately, I wasn’t too late, and I was able to join in the fun with Panel 19 that became IN LEGEND AND STORY. My panel is about how legend became stories, and those stories eventually became the horse books that young girls dream on. My panel salutes the glorious stallions of every color, the gentle mares, and the loyal geldings.
Many of those horse crazy girls are lucky - they never outgrow that love of horses and they grow up to be horse crazy women who make their horse dreams come true. I know they do, because I was one of them.

Popping In

Still life painting byCarole Rodrique, copyright 2008, all rights reserved. Window Light
11 x 14 original acrylic

Work in Progress

Yes, my bad. I haven’t been here in over a month, so slap me silly. But it wasn’t all my fault, I swear! The Internet has really been awful in these parts lately and uploading pages was nearly impossible, never mind taking care of my email or trying to blog. So, spending time online was nothing but frustrating, so one tends to give up after a while. Better that than throwing the darned puter out the window, eh!

I must also confess that painting has been a rare occurence this summer. And I can’t blame summer weather because we’re still waiting for summer to get here. I did however complete the above piece recently (Window Light), and have a few on the go. The photo showing the work in progress is but a small part of a larger piece which I’m still working on and hoping to complete this week. If all goes well that is. So, I won’t show the rest because I do so hate to show a work in progress. I’ll share a pic once competed.

I’ve also been working on the sketches for a new piece I’ve been itching to do for a few weeks of a little girl and her father, which I’d photographed at a rodeo. The painting is such a beautiful father/daughter scene, and I’m hoping to eventually have limited edition signed prints made with a portion of profits going to a popular charity which benefits children. I’ll have more details once everything’s finalized, so let’s all hope this piece turns out like what I’m envisioning! In the mean time, I’ll be working on not only the painting, but making contacts and working on details for the fund raiser. Stay tuned for this one.

Also, have you been staying up to date on the development of the Cadeau du Cheval mural? If not, be sure to check out http://www.muralmosaic.com/Cadeau.html to see just how beautifully this mural’s coming along. There are so many wonderful panels which have been added and yours truly’s is on there also. The final unveiling will be at the Masters at Spruce Meadows (AB) in just a few short weeks! Now that’s really, really exciting since we artists don’t even know what the final mural will look like and have to wait along with the rest of you to see the final masterpiece! Neat eh! So I’m really looking forward to seeing it completed. Keep watching its progress!

Gotta go, but I WILL be back soon! Have a great week everyone!

The Mural Mosaic Project

Le Cadeau du Cheval panel by Joan Jannaman - before.

Le Cadeau du Cheval panel of a jumping white horse by Joan Jannaman - after.

My contribution to the “Cadeau du Cheval, The Horse Gift” Mural Mosaic has been packed and shipped to Alberta. It’s panel #5 all the way on the top left area. I still check the mural site a lot to see if I can see what new paintings have been added. It’s like a game of “where’s waldo”at this point, as the paintings are really filling in the space. (Warning… time flies as you’re checking out all the paintings and reading the artists comments! Addictive in a good way.) I’ve been impressed with the attention to detail that the artists in charge have shown from the beginning, they’ve been great to work with….. Check it out…just go to :

http://www.muralmosaic.com/Cadeau.html

I’ve posted the original panel that arrived in the mail to me back in May. I took one look at it and couldn’t imagine anything else but a big log jump. That’s probably because my friend and I just got back from the Rolex 3 day event and I guess I still had the images of those monster sized hurdles on my mind ! The colors were not in my usual pallete for sure, so it was an adventure to slather on all that purple and electric green and blue! Can’t wait to see the final mural image after it’s unveiled at Spruce Meadows in Canada in September.

July 8 - Update and the Mosaic Project

Le Cadeau du Cheval mural mosaic panel, copyright Elin Pendleton

I’ve been busy and quiet lately! Having fun painting a couple of horses for the Mural Project for Le Cheval (”the horse”). Here is the first of two I’ve sent off to them, both are acrylics. The panels measure approximately 18″ on a side, and the artist must follow the guidelines for value and color to achieve the finished work. Mine was a challenge, but no more so than the others you can see here. Mine are not in place yet… numbers 136 and 216. Perhaps when you get this, the folks in charge will have put it up.
I know that I could not follow the Color System, or pull out the stops to make this painting my own, but I enjoyed the diversion from the other things I’ve been doing.

One of those things is to radically respond to the gas prices. I bought a smaller transportation vehicle–here’s an image of it, complete with the two Teddy Roosevelt terriers, Onslow and Sparky.Elin Pendleton and her new scooter.

Getting 70 mpg is great! This was taken in our driveway.

And the other news is that I’m much thinner than what you see there–dropped 18 pounds, and still going. (Hey, that IS a helmet in my lap!!) I highly recommend the book, “Dr. Gundry’s Diet Evolution” to take the weight off and keep it off. He presents a logical reason why our genetic code makes us unhealthy and chubby as we age. I’m winning, and I hope you will too!

Finished the Peach panel!!

Le Cadeau du Cheval "The Horse Gift" mural mosaic panel of Peach the palomino pony complete. Copyright Michelle Grant.

I am officially finished Peach now!!

I glazed some Burnt Sienna over her forelock and ears, and some in her eye and eyelashes to tone them down some. I also reworked the forelock some more, once it was dry. I straightened the line of the neck more, as it had gotten a bit wobbly. I also glazed in some Burnt Sienna and Alizarin Crimson into her snip, between her nostrils to warm it up and make it more flesh like. I also worked some more highlights into her blaze with a very light mixture of Naples Yellow, Burnt Sienna and Titanium White. Then I signed it! Wooohooo!

This is truly a tribute to a very very special pony who’s awesome personality and character will never be forgotten.

I have posted the finished panel to my website under the “painting” category.
