After the Storm

This past Monday was spent digging out from too much snow. Even with a snow-blower it was an all day affaire. Nothing was done in the studio….it was all about the snow.

But today is sunny and not too cold out. I am back in the studio….and getting things done..sort of.

Our Cobs want hay…just keep them fed and they are happy. Look at the chest on our little Maggie. She will be 5 this year! How time flies! She is really ready to be worked!!
Back to my painting…..because time is flying…..and my casein paint hasn’t been lately!

After the Storm

The last few days on Cob Cottage Farm have been very intense. It was all about survival…keeping warm and hauling water from the flowing brook for house use and for the horses. Actually we had it better than many folks in Maine. We have a generator…and used it to keep warm in the cottage, keep the wine chilled in the fridge [J] and to keep the cell phones charged so we could keep in touch with the outside world. Our two canines had it tough…..they huddled together on the couch. Wish we had it so good!!

Here are some photos of our farm on Friday morning………..we didn’t get our power back until Saturday evening. Today life is back to normal…sort of…and hopefully I can get back to the studio and work.

The ice was coating my Christmas lights and on the deck stars that hang all year round. The birch lining our driveway back to the barn were bending with the weight of the ice.

My yellow barn door really stood out with the blue gray ice decorating the trees. The brave horses slept under the run-out sheds. [while we hauled water for them! ] Guess they have us trained!!!
How beautifully the ice hung from the upside down bird bath like a giant mushroom! And I have been waiting to see the twisted branches of my Harry Lander’s Walking Stick Bush when stripped of his leaves for winter. How neat it is with the twists and spirals of the branches. Needs to be captured in a painting..no? I have a feeling it will!!

October road, Some days are diamonds

I have attached a watercolor painting I did on an 11 x 14 Aqua board.
This painting is ” October road”.
Though this isn’t a road, it is a driveway that belongs to a close friend of the family’s, oh heck, he is family! He lives up on top of this mountain and you can see a large pond below, though not in this painting, and all the tree tops you couldn’t possibly count! He built his home up there many many years ago and the view is gorgeous year ’round! He had recently emailed me some photos of him releasing a young Bald Eagle back into the wild.
So a few weekends back, while the trees were colorful, my husband & I went up there with my camera. And this is one of those views. And remembering his Eagle release, I put a few of them up in the sky in the painting.
This was one of those ‘diamond’ days.

Ms. Vicky

Trevallion Victoria , our Welsh Cob mare, imported from Great Britain as a yearling, is 22 years old now. It is hard to realize that some many years have gone by…I first met Ms Vicky when she was a 3 year old, fresh and not very well behaved. She and her sister, Trevallion Fergie, where paired and then put together in a four in hand driven by Mr Stacy Lloyd of Berryville, VA. I groomed for the Lloyd’s each summer as they drove their Cobs on the Carriage Roads of Acadia National Park. The horses were boarded at Wildwood Stable. We drove every day…and Stacy [as he asked me to call him] taught me the intricacies of carriage driving and Auchenbach…..the German discipline of handling the reins of driving horses. That era is past.

Victoria now lives on our small Maine farm and teaches her daughter, Thistle Mead Margaret, how to behave…….in her queenly manner. For me lately , the ages of our horses [ one at 28 yrs, two at 22 years and the youngster coming 5] have made me sad. Time goes so fast..too quickly… but oh, the good memories we have!

When I haven’t been thinking so much about the past, I have been busy in the studio…working on updating my website and trying to get an email newsletter written. I have new works done, but haven’t uploaded them to my site……….. I have started another watercolor of our Ms Maggie. She always inspires me to paint!

Today was cold and windy out..clouds raced across the dark sky and the sun peeked in and out….a taste of what is to come….winter in full gear…..and I spent time painting our barn doors. I know I should have done it earlier when the weather was warm and sunny. The story of my life I guess!!!

Here Today Gone Tomorrow

The area of Maine that we live in is very rural. It is still a part of Maine that has open space and working farms. We drive on a back country road to get to Belfast…Belfast is where we go to shop, get our horse supplies, visit doctors, etc. We have been living here going on 6 years now, and we were drawn to this area because of the rural-ness…the dirt roads to ride horses on, and carriage drive. Now we see more houses being built…more farms being divided for development. We laugh that maybe it is time to move more north!

The old barn in this landscape graced some fields that we pass on our way to Belfast. We used to get some of our horses’ hay out of this old barn from a local farmer who stored his crop in it. We watched as the old barn and out buildings crumbled….the silo leaned as the boards rotted. It was like watching an old man change with time. A reminder that we aren’t getting any younger either!
And then one day we were saddened to see the old barn down….the outbuilding torned down and the huge support beams being hauled away. It was gone so fast …Here today and then gone tomorrow.

I had started this casein while the barn was standing…..then I put it away and forgot about it.
I got it out a while ago…and now I call it done. It sort of reminds me that I need to do things now…before there is no tomorrow.

This painting is casein on board , sized at 14 x 18″……

Canoeing in Maine

I always love going out in the canoe.

It is the peacefulness, the smell of the water, the call of the Loons and the sound of the wings touching the wave tops as they speed across to the other side. It’s a moment away from civilization. No cars, no human voices, no music, other than the music of the wind in the trees and the water lapping at the canoe sides as it glides through the glass like reflections of Lilly Pads and pond grasses. Here is a place to just ‘be’.

Here is my day today, I am bringing it to you, for you all to enjoy and to ’see’ what I see and what I feel, through my photographs.

Getting out of the studio

I worked on some painting in the studio today. But the sunlight was streaming in and it is such a gorgeous day out there, I had to get out in it. So I gathered up my camera and the dog followed and away we went for a stroll to the small pond beyond my home.

Just to the right of my front door is this huge Pine tree. The top of it stretches to the heavens, I do believe. With my 20X zoom, I captured the pine cones that hang on the very top. Great food for the small birds that frequent our yard.

Near the end of our path, where it opens up into a larger mass of grass and Pine trees and then the pond, I noticed some leaves on the bushes starting to change color. The play of light and shadow was wonderful.

A little bit further yields a few Apple trees. This is where the deer like to venture and they are often found wandering up the path behind my home. You will notice that the grass is very well manicured. My brother-in-law keeps it mowed and mows paths around the pond too. Great digging for the skunks and other nocturnal animals.

These are some of the Pine trees and other trees that line the edge of the woods. Wood paths meander down inside for short wooded trips into the forest.

And here is the infamous pond that lies beyond my path. It is a very peaceful place and the Canadian Geese and Blue Heron love to paddle around and the frogs croak and bask in the sun. Funny, I haven’t seen the large birds here yet. Maybe as Fall approaches, they will show themselves.

After finding our way back to our yard, I snapped a close up of one of my Geraniums. It is so rich in pink color and the sunlight bounced off it’s soft petals. I just had to zoom in on this one, to save as wallpaper on my computer, to remind me of this glorious day that has been sent my way.

I hope you enjoyed your virtual walk to the pond with me. Soon the days will be shorter, and colder and walking to the pond will be impossible through the snow, unless of course someone decides to take out the 4~Wheeler and pack down the snow! I used to cross country ski, but the equipment is very old now…but not me…ha!

Rescued Italian Grey

Casein painting of an Italian Greyhound copyright Kathi Peters, all rights reserved.

The Italian Grayhound breed fascinates me. These dogs are like high fashion models ..all lines and curves. This little ‘Italiano’ greeted me at our local tack shop….I asked if I could photograph the little one and this is one of the shots that interested me….the shadow and lines and curves again.
This is a small casein on canvas on board. [5 x 7"] A joy to paint.

This Labor Day is a glorious day weather wise for us here in Morrill, Maine…we are blessed. My thoughts have been with all the folks…and animals .. affected by Gustav as he pushs his way into their lives today. God bless them all.

Arts in the park, Belfast Maine & Le Cadeau Du Cheval Mural Panel is up

"On The Scent," a watercolor painting of a hound by artist Debbie Flood. Copyright Debbie Flood.

This Watercolor Painting: On the scent is included in an online show with the Canine Art Guild,CAG “Pot luck Exhibit”. Check it out and vote for your favorite!!

What a week here at the studio! I am feverishly working to get all inventory framed, or packaged and priced and ready for the Arts in the Park in Belfast, Maine, July 12 & 13.
I am currently taking pre~orders for the Giclee of the Jennie Flood Kreger, Schooner, Watercolor. I think this is going to be a very popular painting & image! If you want to reserve a Limited Edition Giclee for yourself, please contact me, Debbie Flood, or come to the Arts in the Park festival to reserve your edition. There will only be 50 printed in the large size. If anyone is interested in an open edition, smaller Giclee, I will take orders for those too. I will have the original Watercolor painting on view at the park festival also.

The mural panel I painted, titled “The ride of freedom” for the Le Cadeau Du Cheval, The Horse Gift, Mural, is now up on the grid on their website. It is panel #3. Click on the panel on the grid and my dedication comes up with a larger view of the painting. I am also taking orders and selling a 12 x 12 Giclee of this image.

I am also finishing up an oil painting commission. A seven person portrait, with the church the parents were married in. I’m crunching to get this painting done. It has a deadline of, no later than August 14! Oil paint is so slow to dry and it should be painted in layers. Each layer needs to dry to touch before another layer can be added. I’ve only been sweating a few bullets…ha.
This is why it is so important to contact me very early….way before the deadlines are due, when wanting an oil painting. This client contacted me a year in advance! Thank you for that!!
I’ve had people ask me if I can do an oil a few weeks before Christmas! Right…when pigs fly! I think that is why I do so many watercolors. Those I can whip up a little better in a timely manner.
But I do have a Watercolor Painting Commission at the moment that needs to be finished up. I think it is pretty close. Next step will be to have the client check it. Make any needed adjustments and then frame it.

It’s getting late here tonight. Oh those summer nights! I love July!!!! Need to hit the hay and get back into the studio tomorrow. Yup, on a Sunday! No rest for the artist.

Belfast’s Past Series of Watercolors in Maine

Watercolor painting of the Percy Sanborn. Copyright Debbie Flood.

Belfast’s Past Series
. I have been working on a series of watercolors since last Spring 2007, titled Belfast’s past. This series consists of watercolors painted from images ranging from the 1800’s to 1900’s with a percentage of sales donated to the Belfast Historical Society Museum. The Series consists of Original Watercolors & Limited Editions of 50 Giclee. This project has been well received and a hefty amount was donated to the Museum from last years sales. I have just finished the fourth image for this series and have it attached here for your viewing pleasure. This is the ‘Jennie Flood Kreger’ built and launched in Belfast, Maine in 1919. Being a 5 mast Schooner, this was the largest ship built in Belfast. It later called Boston, Mass., it’s home port. I have been researching Jennie Flood Kreger (the person) to find out who she was and how she relates to this ship. Also, Flood is my husbands family name, but I am not finding any relation as of yet. This is one of the most fun projects I think I have done. I enjoy the history and the feeling that I am portraying my ancestry. A cousin of mine, Percy Sanborn, was a prominent artist in Belfast back then and the Belfast Museum has many of his watercolors, Oil paintings, music and writings in it’s collections. I feel I am carrying on the tradition.
I’ll have the Belfast’s past series of Originals and Giclee at the Arts in the Park, Belfast July 12 & 13. To see the other images painted for this series, go to my website and click on the Belfast’s past series page.
This Original Watercolor measures 14 x 26. The Limited Edition of 50 Giclee will measure about the same. I am in the process of taking pre-pay/pre-orders of the Giclee right now.

Le Cadeau Du Chevel, The Horse Gift Mural

Le Cadeau du Cheval mural mosaic panel

Wow, what fun this was! I do believe that it is done. This was painted in oils for the Le Cadeau Du Cheval, The Horse Gift. A Mural project in Canada.
You can veiw the grid on line as the panels are being finished and put up. Click on the link above.

I am still waiting for this to dry more and hopefully this week I can get it to my professional photographer and have some Giclee made of it. Once I have the pro photo, I will send that to the gentlemen who are running the mural project and they will get the image up on the grid, on line.

Then I’ll be packing it up and ship it back to them before July 1, 2008!
I’m still stuck for a title. It needs to be a title that can live up to the meaning of the painting. So more thought will be going into that, and I will get something written up to go with the panel.

The Horse’s Maine May Cover

Howdy all, Hope you are all having a great week! The weekend is almost here!
I’m excited to show you all the cover of ‘The Horse’s Maine’ May 2008 issue! It’s the Watercolor painting I did, titled “Snack time”. The publication is a New England Equestrian newspaper. It is dispersed to horse club members, barns, tack shops, feed stores and the like. A very popular read in the New England area!
In 2006 this mare in the painting, ‘Sheeza peeping tom’, lovingly called ‘Pumpkin’ won a few regional awards and ending up tenth in the nation in Novice Non Pro Showmanship and “2006 Maine Overall High Point Novice Non Pro for the Year”, Maine Appaloosa Horse .
I painted this painting from a snapshot I took at the Skowhegan, Maine, Appaloosa Point show in 2006. She had just completed the trail class and was awarded a carrot.
Not only the subject matter, that was going on, prompted me to paint this, but Pumpkin’s beautiful coloring and her well manners and gentleness that showed in her eyes. To me, she is what the Appaloosa breed is all about.
I’m partial to Apps, as I was raised on an Appaloosa farm. I know first hand, how much they think they are people! Many times our App Gelding would ask: “A horse????? What’s that????!!!!” He just had that expression all over his face. And on that note, I will leave today’s post with a Watercolor Portrait I did of him “Snooper’s raindrop”. My teenage love of long ago…..
