Shy Watercolor Progress Straw Hat Series

Hi, and happy Tuesday! I have titled this watercolor painting Shy. It is coming along pretty good. I was able to get a lot done on it today. After doing ‘Contented’, the watercolor of my father in his straw hat, and the fact that I had today’s image going, I thought I would start a Straw Hat series! So this is the second painting in the series. Sunday I went to the Belfast, Maine horse show and found so many people with straw hats! I’ve also started another straw hat painting titled ‘Sly peep’. That can be seen on my website ‘In Progress’ page here: http://www.debfloodart.com/debbie_flood_015.htm

Saturday I was at the Waterville, Maine downtown sidewalk art festival with my booth. The weather was great, though a bit hot, we all made it through! I’m very pleased to announce that my watercolor painting “Grumpy draft” received 3rd place in the watercolor division of the art show judged competition! Very happy about that. You can see the painting here: http://www.debfloodart.com/grumpy20medium20view.jpg

I have two more hat images to work into paintings and another in the pc, waiting for me to work with composition and cropping. Actually, I need to work from two images for that one, so it will take a little longer to get that worked up the way I want it. It does involve a Friesian horse and an elegant straw hat!

Have a great evening,

Debbie

New Art Work, Great News!

“Fetching The Horse” casein on board 5 x7″

A small casein is off the easel, so to speak. A new ParsonJack Russell at play….aren’t they always playing!? Our JRT,Nell is also looking for a play fellow, someone to throw her ‘baby’ for her to fetch, or to take the opposite end of baling twine to play Tug of War. I never get tired of painting dogs….and our JRT and our Corgi are often the canine subjects I portray. But this painting is of a cute little Jack in Lexington that I saw last year. So when I go to Lexington, it isn’t just to capture images of horses! Dogs too!!!!

These days I am busy working on new paintings for my September show… back at Gallery B again. That is always a fun trip with neat horses to see and time spent with good friends.

Yesterday I learned that I was one of the top ten finalists in the voting for favorites in the Bold Brush Painting Competition for the month of June. I actually didn’t even know they did a People’s Choice vote and I am really excited to see my work in that first line of artists… in a very popular online show. In June, I had entered a painting done a bit ago, a watercolor of three Peruvian Paso horses.Who knew it would get 6th place in popular vote in The Fav’s part of the competition in a show that attracts some very brilliant professional artists. So I am painting and smiling today! And gee…thanks to all the friends and folks who voted for my painting!! Thumbs Up!!

“Trio Brio” watercolor on board 12 x 12″

These horses are from a Peruvian Horse Farm in Texas. JyW Coyote Creek Ranch , breeders of the beautiful Peruvian Paso Horse. They now have this painting in their collection.

What a beautiful day we are experiencing here in Maine…. Here’s to a Happy Forth of July weekend for Mainers and those from away!! Enjoy! I will be!!!

Plein Air With A Friend

We had a plan. Renee Lammers and I met at a local farm to paint together. When I arrived Renee was there before me and already into her paint. It was such a beautiful day out…very bright and very windy. But we were able to find a spot out of the wind, protected by the house and barn behind us. We choice different angles to approach our paintings from… of the farm’s chicken house. The local hen-ladies pecked and scratched around us…and gave their approval of our work! A resident kitten was fascinated with my pens as I sketched my paper..and kept leaping into my lap singing a spring song and waiting my full attention! My finished work has muddy kitten paw prints added into the mixed media!!

I started out working on a pen and ink sketch, and then thought I would like to add some color….it was a good thought, but not very well thought out, as I had drawn on drawing paper and so my finished painting is a bit buckled…but I had fun! …got out into the fresh air and sun….and got wind burnt!! Renee is determined she will make a plein air painter out of me yet!

“The Hen’s House” watercolor and pen and muddy paw prints 8 x11″
Renee’s oil came out a lot better than mine! No cat paws included.

Renee’s oil, above…. with the sun kind of bouncing off it in this shot.  Check her blog to get a better shot of the finished product!! Okay, Renee….where are we going tomorrow???

Seals off the coast of Maine, more progress on the watercolor

This is the progress today on the Seal watercolor painting. The photo or my monitor is showing this a bit darker than it is. I’m posting this from the studio and I have the original here comparing to what is on my screen. The rocks at the top of the painting are lighter and the light is bouncing around in the original, than what is showing here for me. But it is close enough for you to get the idea of colors being used.

I got my wireless turbo Road Runner internet this morning. I was able to update my website. I have two new pages on there. One page has the Child a day paintings on it, mostly the kids with horses. I also have a ‘Traditional portrait’ page. On that page you can see the different portraits that are available, and potentially what a portrait of yours could look like. I also updated my Equine Art page with all the latest paintings. Click on the small images, on the Equine Art page and they will open up for you into a larger version. http://www.debfloodart.com Enjoy!

I hope your Wednesday is going great for you!

Seals off the coast of Maine, Watercolor in progress

Yesterday I started a watercolor of seals off the coast of Maine. The painting was continually going down hill. I even tried cropping/cutting the top of it off. Used some Gouache to try and save the doomed painting. But nothing was working and it was sucking the life out of me. I canned it today. Getting rid of that painting was like a great weight had been lifted off my body & mind! I started over. I liked the scene I had, so I am starting the same painting over. I did omit a couple seals, which took care of too much stuff going on. I’m having so much more fun with this one. I also cropped it to a smaller size than the thrown out one. Much better, in my opinion. I know you can’t compare…because I won’t let the sorts of that thrown out one ever be seen!

I hope you are having a creative Tuesday!Talk with you tomorrow,

Debbie

An Aarhus Gallery Show

“They Stand, They Wait-Acadia” casein on paper 9 x 12″

Please join me at Åarhus Gallery for an opening reception Friday March 5th, 5-8pm for the second annual ’44N 69W: Radius Belfast’. An all encompassing show running from March 4th through the 28th, featuring work by Maine artists. All artworks, celebrating this vast creative community, will be on view and for sale with 20% of proceeds going to food banks within a thirty-mile radius of Belfast. Last year over one hundred and fifty pieces of art were exhibited to the delight of hundreds of visitors, with consequent sales enabling a generous donation to the Good Shepard Food Bank. This year I am exhibiting a painting depicting carriage horses up at Acadia National Park, Maine’s crown jewel! We have spent many wonderful hours driving the carriage roads of Acadia ourselves. I will never tire of painting horses at Acadia! I am honored to be part of this great endeavor!

Day 2 Of Casein Of Pony

This is where this casein painting is at mid-day of day two. I will now let it sit and dry before I go back into it with more color. I usually do my casein paintings on a colored ground and leave a bit of that colored ground show here and there in a painting. I feel it give it a depth.

So now this afternoon, I am working on an oil….started with casein and am now painting over the dried casein under-painting. This is a carriage driving scene too, but with 4 white horses…not one little cute Welsh pony!
Back into the paint!

“Comforting a friend” Watercolor Painting Finished

I’ve recently finished “Comforting a friend” 13 x 14 Watercolor. This team is from a team of 6 Black Percherons. They have been out in the sun during the Summer months, so when I photographed them, they were bleached out to this pretty reddish bay color. I couldn’t resist the bounced orange and red light upon their coats and the emotions they portrayed on their faces, when interacting with one another.

Much To Do About Harry

We woke up to a morning white with new fallen snow. Not a lot. Just enough to make the world outside our cottage white, bright and fluffy. The dogs love rolling in it…the horses love running in it and kicking up their heels. Even my old Tennessee Walker, Dom, [ COMING 30!] enjoyed it for a bit. But now the winds have kicked up and the temps have plummeted with a wind-chill factor that makes being outside uncomfortable. The horses need more hay!

One of my life’s passions is my flower gardens. They keep growing on me. Each spring I say no more plants! and then I go by a greenhouse….and before I know it new perennials have found their way into my truck and then need to be planted. I swear this is going to be the year that I DO NOT get new plants.

Under the new blanket of snow sit my gardens…..and they all take care, transplanting, dividing and pruning. Will I never learn??!!!

This is a photo of my “Harry”..[ a Harry Lander's Bush ]…and I love him and his gnarly branches….and when he is draped with snow he is so lovely!

While I am thinking about it : I have been working on my website and have a few new casein works on it now. Tell me what you think.

And now I need to get dressed up in my layers of winter clothes and walk the dogs, and feed the horses. Just getting dressed these winter days is a chore in it’s self….never mind the horses, dogs, gardens, painting, paperwork, house care, cooking….on and on………..

Pony and Snow Revisited

This is an 8 x 10″ mixed media painting on board that I have done before in casein, but felt a need to “revisit”again as a mixed media. This time I used casein, acrylic and ink to get the effect that I was looking for. This winter painting is available on my website.

‘Frolic” the pony in this work, came into our lives when we lived in North Pownal. At the point we had 6 horses and Frolic became our granddaughter’s first pony. He was a great guy…very well behaved and knew how to take care of a new rider. But not only did he know riders, he was a great driving pony who once was part of a handsome pair. A handsome Welsh pony….the kind that every little girl dreams of and for a while he was part of our Jackie’s life.

Winter’s Spring Rains

The rain came down for hours, pounding on our cottage’s metal roof, running in rivulets down the driveway back to the barn and it filled our bubbly brook to over flowing. This brook is usually a rambling brook that gently trips it way through the woods that stand on the one side of our property. There is a scraggly evergreen tree that stands in the middle of this brook …and I love it. It has grown a bit since we moved here, and I enjoy seeing it as it stands sentinel in the midst of the mountain run-off brook. I imagine decorating it with lights and tinsel every Christmas, but I don’t do it. Instead I let mother nature decorate it with new fallen snow each winter, and to skirt it with a blanket of ice. So far this winter there has not been any snow here in our part of Maine, but I am sure we won’t have to wait much longer for the white to come. Until it does come, I will enjoy listening to the brook as it sings… as it winds past Cob Cottage.

I have been busy working on several works in casein, and one of these paintings is of a hunt scene. I started with one image and have added and subtracted from it in the process. The image below is how it looked at one point. Keep this in mind, as I will be posting the finished work very shortly….and it looks differently . That is my prerogative …artist license one could say. I am just trying to sing my song…and sometimes I get out of tune! I hope it is ‘on pitch’ when it is done!

Dark Red Bay Percherons, New Watercolor

I’ve started a new Watercolor this week. This is how far I have come on this as of today. This image is 13 x 14 inches. I took the reference photo at a Draft Horse Show this past Summer. I took so many photos that day. These two were part of a six horse hitch of dark red bay Percherons. I decided to crop the image to get an intimate feeling with the two up front, leading the pack. I’m getting very addicted to this painting. I go to bed at night, thinking how I would love to work on it…but my lighting isn’t very good in the studio at night. Not for getting true colors anyways. I’ve been thinking about those lights that create daylight in the studio. I may do some research on those. But then…I would be tempted to stay up at all hours of the night painting! That might not be so good for me. I wouldn’t get much sleep and my family really wouldn’t like me then! So I work hard all day on it, get a good nights sleep and jump out of bed in the morning…rearing to go at this painting again!
I finished the grumpy draft horse. I haven’t photographed it yet. I’m waiting for the best lighting situation to get a true to color image. A client saw it in person tonight and she really liked it. I think it will be a popular image! Maybe a Giclee reproduction is in store for that painting. He’s such a moody, grumpy horse, with a tangled mane!

Thank you for following my Blog. I enjoy painting and I really enjoy showing them to you. Even better is when you like them enough to add them to your collection. That is the ultimate praise to give an artist.

Grumpy Draft Horse, watercolor in progress

I started working on a Grumpy Draft horse yesterday. I have a slug of images from this past summer, where I took photos of these draft horses (Belgians) at a farm in their pasture. I was actually at a horse show and these big guys live next door, across the road. I know the owner, and I saw him start to go over to his pasture from the show. Over there was a group of children with parents, looking at the peacful giants out there grazing. Some of the horses noticed the people at the fence and started to wander over to see what they might have for treats, I suspect. I knew this would be a great photo op…the large horses, the small horse crazy little girls! So over I went! The owner ducked under the fence and grabbed the halterless head and over they sauntered. The other horses all soon followed.

I bet at this point you are wondering, why was this horse so grumpy?! Well, he was more jealous than anything. You see, these big guys love attention! And if one thinks someone else in the herd is getting more lovin’ and pats than him…well, he shoots a warning look at the attention hog! I loved the drama that was playing out with this guy. In the reference photo the other horse is right under his neck and head, but I decided to leave all that out and let the viewer come to his/her own conclusion as to why this guy is looking so grumpy. Looks like a bad hair day with all those tangles in his mane!

This painting is 18 x 15, created with Watercolors. These photos are the work in progress. The top image shows the full painting. The middle photo shows it on the easel and helps you see the size of the piece in reference to the easle and other things. The last photo is a close up of the head, so you can see the details that have been added already.
Today I worked on the tangled mane. I’ll get a photo of that, hopefully tomorrow.

“Hoofin’ it” Western watercolor

I have been doing a lot of small watercolor paintings of this young man. He always has a wonderful outfit at the horse shows. This coat was no exception! I think the painting pretty much speaks for its self here. The coat has a split up the back for ease in riding, and as he walked along leading his horse, it was flipping in the breeze he created with his swiftness.

You can also find this painting in my book, “Painting a child a day, the first six months, Volume 1″. There are a lot of children and horses in this book. My favorite subject matter. The link to the book is at the top right of this Blog.

No Foot No Horse

The old saying” No Foot No Horse” came to mind when I first saw this scene. I was attracted to the image of the horse and his caretaker….but it really was the landscape, the Mediterranean light and the shortened view that captured my muse…. and so I painted it, a 12 x 16″ casein on board.
The finished painting is available on my website now. Jordi, a friend from Spain and his handsome Freisian are the subjects in this shot….I thank Jordi and Captain!
The title of this work is “Spanish Freisian”…..maybe I should change it to “No Foot No Horse”?

A Day In The Sun

After a weekend of rain, today Les and I headed out into the woods, to the back of our property, to see the fall foliage along the brook. How I love the smell of the woods, the cedar and pine, the wet dirt and composting leaves….all speckled with sun light. I swear I am going to head there in the spring to capture it all plein air….but this year I will work from photos taken today. I am busy with commissions now and upcoming shows, so my landscape work is going to have to wait.
It was a very healing peaceful experience this morning…..I needed it. We should all be so blessed to have a chance to venture into The Lord’s woods.

On our way back, as we cut through our spruce grove at the back of our pastures, we have upon this fairies ring of mushrooms. I don’t know the name of these mushrooms, or how fatal they might be…but I am sure that there are fairies somewhere near this spot that dance in the night with the deer and other wildlife looking on. At least that vision came to mind upon discovery of this ring!

Now back in my studio to work on a watercolor commission the rest of the day, I feel refreshed from my day in the sun.

Back Into The Bigger Biggers

This afternoon I finally was able to get back into the studio and set up my easel to get back into painting this 30 x 40″ casein of the “Beautiful Blonde Belgians”. Even though it seems to be taking a long time to finish this one…it is one of those paintings that seems to be painting itself. I am using my usual palette… but it seems to be coming together differently. We shall see when it is done! Once I got over the initial fear of the BIG CANVAS ….I am loving the looseness I feel doing this.

Nellie has been helping me by keeping me company from the comfort of our bed. From there she can see into my studio… and also into the mirror to keep tabs on that canine friend of hers who lives in the “Bizarro” world inside the mirror. That silly dog barks at her and growls a lot…but has yet to come into the bedroom to actually challenge her…big brave dog that she is!!

I love this shot of her…I think I will have to paint this one!

Done – Fall Gray

This morning I am heading out with hubby, two dogs and my painting to help hang the Skyline Farm show….
This painting is done..and framed, ready to hang. It is a 18 x34″ casein on canvas and it is titled “Fall Gray”. The scene depicts Maine Carriage Day at Skyline Farm, a very old and traditional pleasure driving show that originated in Maine many years ago!

Gotta run….it’s long drive [ by car ] to North Yarmouth!!!
