Dress Blues Revisited and FREE Golden Open Paint!

This painting has been haunting me. It has had no less then 5 inquiries from collectors wanting to purchase it yet here it sits in my studio. I keep looking at the painting and the horse’s expression and eye have really been bothering me. So last night I sat down with my little Arches #1 Sable and got to work on the eye. Ten minutes later…voila! I now have a painting that I love.

Older version- This is much improved. Don’t you think! I am known for the expression that I can create in the eye and this just was not cutting it for me. Eye too dull and flat..

New and improved version of Dress Blues- 11 x 14 Watercolor on Arches 140# Hot Press paper
Now and I would be delighted to send this off to new home! To purchase click

“Love Story,” Commissioned Portrait

I’ve been quiet of late because I’m hard at work on commissions at the moment. I usually don’t post commissions as works in progress – you won’t see them here until they are complete and have been approved by the client. Sometimes that’s because they are gifts, and sometimes it’s just because there is often fine-tuning at the end once the client has seen the almost completed portrait, and I’d rather wait until those details have been worked through.

Above is one of my latest pieces, an 8 x 10 pencil portrait of a retired jumper mare named Love Story. The photo we ended up going with for this one was actually supplied by Diane McFarlane, a photographer who commissioned me to do the drawing for her friend. I did get to meet this beautiful mare, however, and really enjoyed that time!

I’ll post an oil portrait I’ve also recently completed next time. Now, it’s back to the easel, where I have two more oil commissions on the go. For now, my other works in progress are on hold!

Jumper Painting

I just started this new painting of a jumper working on the flat this evening. I’m taking a little break so thought I would post the work in progress. I pretty much just blocked in the shapes here and will start to tighten things up a bit but not too much. I want to keep it loose and painterly. This measures 10 x 8 and is acrylic on canvas board. I apologize for the glare I took it with a flash but you can get the basic idea.

I listed a new quick sketch 5 x 7 painting yesterday in my Etsy store. It is a small acrylic sketch of an in- foal Gypsy Vanner from a reference photo from the Wet Canvas reference library. Painted on gessoed hardboard it can pop right into a stock frame and is ready for hanging. This is titled Gypsy Mama and is available for purchase for $25 plus Priority Mail shipping.

“Charisma”
Graphite on Paper, 18×23 cm
Copyright Sheona Hamilton-Grant

Charisma is finished and being framed ready to make tracks to his forever home in Germany.

He was a gorgeous subject to draw: athletic, fit, alert, dark and handsome…
The angle of the reference was not ideal with quite a bit of foreshortening and distortion. (Since the last post I corrected the right ear, the nose and the right eye…!)

This however was a good challenge: the type you need to keep artistically &”graphitely” fit.

On the drawing board this week is a combination of both figurative and canine art.

Nothing definitive has made it yet on paper …ideas are still spinning in my mind and being sketched out.

I will post when the pencil marks start to make harmonious sense.
Until then, wishing you all a super start to the week.:)

Charisma : a pencil portrait taking shape.

Back on track.
Below the proof.

Step 5: Top line in neck defined and detailed helping to accurately define the neck muscle.
Step 6: Leather bridle and pelham bit added, more work on muscle structure in both chest and neck.

Music, back bone and inspiration to many artists, was my rescue as I started work this am.

Chestnut Landing

How do you like the new look? I know it’s not March yet but I thought I’d jump the gun. I’ve always loved March. It’s the month that contains so many cool things: Spring, wild weather changes, St. Patty’s Day, mine and my dh’s b.days, occasionally Easter, daylight savings time…

So here’s another jumper from Devon. This guys in the landing phase of the jump. Wish I could remember the names of these horses! I do think the last grey horse was named Mr. Spoon. I’m working on a gorgeous bay right now. I think he was ridden by McLain Ward.

THANK YOU so much to everyone for their kind comments! Really keeps me going. Please accept my apologies if I”m not able to reciprocate the comments. I’m trying my best to visit everyone’s blogs.

I’m tossing around the idea of selling at a horse show this summer. I think it would be a lot of fun and get me close to all those wonderful sights, sounds and smells I miss. Plus I can have the hubby man the booth while I go and take photos!
We’ll see!

The Mural Mosaic Project

Le Cadeau du Cheval panel by Joan Jannaman - before.

Le Cadeau du Cheval panel of a jumping white horse by Joan Jannaman - after.

My contribution to the “Cadeau du Cheval, The Horse Gift” Mural Mosaic has been packed and shipped to Alberta. It’s panel #5 all the way on the top left area. I still check the mural site a lot to see if I can see what new paintings have been added. It’s like a game of “where’s waldo”at this point, as the paintings are really filling in the space. (Warning… time flies as you’re checking out all the paintings and reading the artists comments! Addictive in a good way.) I’ve been impressed with the attention to detail that the artists in charge have shown from the beginning, they’ve been great to work with….. Check it out…just go to :

http://www.muralmosaic.com/Cadeau.html

I’ve posted the original panel that arrived in the mail to me back in May. I took one look at it and couldn’t imagine anything else but a big log jump. That’s probably because my friend and I just got back from the Rolex 3 day event and I guess I still had the images of those monster sized hurdles on my mind ! The colors were not in my usual pallete for sure, so it was an adventure to slather on all that purple and electric green and blue! Can’t wait to see the final mural image after it’s unveiled at Spruce Meadows in Canada in September.

Show Jumper Completed!

Painting of a jumping horse copyright Deborah O'Sullivan.

I have just about completed this painting. I have a couple of more things I need to tweak and then it goes off to be framed. I think I may display this up at HITS for the Art Gala next week. I am happy with how this came out. I wanted to keep it loose and very colorful. This is acrylic, 24 x 20 on canvas and titled Flying Colors. Comments always welcome. I have a studio sale on Ebay this week. I will be listing a few prints. So be sure to check them out!

Showjumping WIP

I have been working on this painting for the HITS Art Gala and Exhibitor Mixer in Saugerties,NY. The opening reception is on July 24 and I am thriled tohave been invited to participate.
The painting measures 24 x 20 and is acrylic on canvas. I am trying to keep this loose and colorful. I have about an hour and half into this and I am hoping to have it completed by the end of the weekend. I am really starting to enjoy working large like! I have been working hard at stretching myself as an artist and move away from my previous style of hyper-realism. This style suits me much better. Feel free to comment!
