Almost March

I’m so excited, it’s almost March, a month with so many possibilities. Will is rain? Will it snow? Is it going to be 50 degrees outside or will it be freezing. Of course it’s the month that contains my birthday (and husband’s) so it’s always been a special time for me.

Any other Pisces out there? I love to meet other artsy fish like me!

So here’s what I’ve been up to this week (I’m really itchin’ to paint a horse, maybe next week!):

Working on turning an image that I’ve painted into a sculpture.
Little bunny in a pumpkin. Nice for Halloween or Easter, right?

Playing around with another rabbit I’ve sculpted. Not sure what direction this one is going in yet. My husband says this bun freaks him out a little.

Went to Landis Valley today and got to hop on a wagon for a ride.

Too cold and windy to stay long but we had fun on the ride!

Finally finished my Dutch Rabbit in the Jack O’ Lantern today!

Franny the Snow Witch

Franny the Snow Witch came to life one day,
when some witches in the village went out for winter play.
Her body they made from snowballs, big and round.
For her nose they used a carrot they had found.
After placing the coal for her mouth and her eyes,
“Something is missing!”, the oldest witch sighs.
Removing from her head a hat pointed and worn,
then placing it on Franny’s and POOF, she was born!
Quickly they worked to build her familiar,
a cat named Snowball that looked quite peculiar.
Franny the snow witch came to life that day indeed,
to remind us of the magic of winter, the witches all agreed!

Franny is a friendly witch, she loves to sit and watch the birds all day long.

She measures 13″ x 7″ and both her and her kitty can be easily removed from their base.

You can’t see it in the photos,
but she has touches of diamond dust glitter and mica flakes all around her.
She can come live with you for $145. She will travel for free if you live in the US
Please email me if you would like to give her a new home.

I have a few other Halloween pieces for sale in my Etsy Shop including a wonderful folk art Sleepy Hollow painting that’s one of my favorites!

I am working on a new Halloween sculpture this week, a large owl on a pumpkin!
Here’s a work in progress photo…

Hallowe’en ghost town

This was a reasonably busy week for me in a photo gathering sense. Mid-week I was asked to head out to Ebon for indoor shots (in the usual challenging lighting) to get the first “under saddle” photos of one of the many nice home-bred youngsters that is starting her education as a riding horse. I don’t dread these requests the way I used to, as I have finally figured out which camera/lens/settings combination will allow me to get shots that I’m not completely ashamed of. Outdoors, no problem. Indoors, a challenge, at least the indoors that I have access to. Those shots turned out well enough, so then management decided to up the anxiety ante for me by requesting a return visit to get some chute jumping shots on Friday morning. Normally indoors chute jumping is my most dreaded assignment of any given year, but this one went strangely well all round. I stayed calm, didn’t make too many technical errors, have noted the one I did make so I can avoid it next time, and the whole thing was actually a reasonably pleasant experience. Quite unaccountable. Who knows, a bit more practice and I might actually start looking forward to it. Even a tough photo shoot is better than no photo shoot in my world, and it is satisfying to feel that I have learned enough along the way to be able to do this type of shot adequately.
We (daughter Margaret, grandson Mark and I) had made tentative plans to go shoot the twisted trees of the Hafford area on Saturday, but it being Hallowe’en day, it seemed to me much more in keeping to make another attempt at the ghost town that we failed to locate on our August attempt (see my August 3rd blog post for details) . Unlike the last time, we had a map that actually had roads on it (not the large blank area with a place name in the middle of nowhere of the last map), we had gas in the van (were running on empty in addition to being lost last trip), and we had a GPS. Perhaps most importantly, two out of three of us were women, who are actually willing to *consult* the maps and pay attention to the GPS, although I have to confess that Mark was the one who noticed when the GPS had useful information to impart. Margaret and I were going on intuition and forgot to check it. The short version of all this is that this time we actually got there.
Not to say our trip was uneventful. It was (as usual) cold, overcast, dark, and chilly when we headed out of town. By the time we were a few kilometers beyond the city limits, it was snowing quite heavily and a strong wind had come up. Then we went through several combinations of snow, rain, and freezing rain, all the while making hopeful comments that “maybe we would drive out of it”, and “so far the roads don’t seem *too* bad”, followed by “well, we can always turn back if we have to”. We stopped once by a large slough which had a large gathering of corvids (couldn’t tell from a distance whether they were crows or ravens) for me to get a couple of shots of their rapidly retreating forms, and I was encouraged to see that the camera was picking up a lot more light than actually seemed to be around. That made me want to carry on, as I’ll put up with a lot of bad weather as long as the light is remotely adequate for shooting.
Eventually, following the twists and turns of the map on ever smaller roads that remained surprisingly good for navigation, we came to our ghost town. I had found some photos of it online as part of my research, so I knew it had a grain elevator, which was a great help in spotting it from a distance. It was well worth the time and effort we had invested (both times) to see this place. For someone in love with photographing ruin and decay, as I am, it holds endless potential.
Today’s shots are primarily from the Saturday outing. Shot one shows the grain elevator with Mark leaning into the wind on the path up to it. Shot two was taken inside the elevator, and shows some of the working mechanisms. There is still grain sitting inside on the floor, and the odd thing that I noticed, both in the elevator and in the other buildings, is that there was no evidence of mice, rats, or any other living creatures. I would have expected that, at least in the elevator, and for the grain to be gone or disturbed, but no. Very strange.
Shot three is the broken north window on one of the houses. Windows on three sides of the house were damaged, but intact on a fourth side. Again, odd.
Shot four is taken from the front door of an abandoned farm-house south of the ghost town. I loved the colours and textures of the surfaces in this house and want to go back again when there are better light conditions and it isn’t pouring rain. That said, I’m impressed with the job my lens did with no flash and available light. I’m a sucker for crackle texture and this staircase had it in spades. I took this shot from the front door jamb. There are safety issues involved in entering old ruins, with the potential of falling through the floor, having the upstairs floor fall on me, or breathing in who-knows-what in the old dusty and moldy surroundings (hantavirus, anyone?). Then there is the respect issue. I tend to feel fairly strongly about making minimal impact, not touching or moving things, and generally taking only my photographic images away with me. After all, these buildings still belong to someone and I don’t want to get on the wrong side of the owner if he happens to come along while I’m in the midst of my shoot.
So, all in all, a very satisfactory way to spend part of a Saturday, despite the weather handicaps. I’m already planning a return trip before the snows make getting there too difficult, but Hallowe’en day was the perfect time for our first visit. I’m thinking it might need to become an annual pilgrimage on that day.
The final shot is one that I have been working on in the computer. It features one of the North Fork gypsy cob stallions, overlaid onto a page from the Book of Kells. This is one of several variations on the same theme that I am developing.

GHOST HORSE

The day is here. Time to get out the black silk witch’s hat that is so charmingly trimmed in black net and lavender roses, dust off the corn broom, and carve the pumpkins. Who knows, maybe this year I will see the mysterious “Ghost Horse” up on the hill. Have a BOOtiful Halloween everyone!

A little Halloween silliness…

Twas the night before Halloween and all through our spooky pad
No ghosts were out haunting, no spirits to be had
The pumpkins were lined down the driveway so near
In hopes a witch or werewolf soon would be here!

Our little mummy was wrapped all snug in her crypt
With dreams of candy corn and apples, caramel dipped.
I was in my own vault, asleep like the dead
My husband the Hessian soldier, still out looking for his head!

When out in the yard I heard a noisy rattle
Like the rusty bells on our old haunted cattle
I torn off my vault’s lid as quick as a flash
What was the racket? Whose head I should I bash?

And there she stood, a magical site
The loveliest witch to haunt this wondrous night!
She was riding not a broom but a jet black mare
Tail blowing in the wind, prancing ’round without care.

The full moon was out lighting her way
She carried a bag of sparkling powder she borrowed from the Fae
Dusting the pumpkins one by one
With Halloween magic just for fun.

I crawled back to my bed so she could go about her night
of spreading spooky cheer underneath the pale moon light
I looked out my window for one last site as she sang
Happy Halloween to all, and to all a good fright!

Chadds Ford Pumpkin Carve (part 2)

These are not my pumpkins but I thought I would share. After I carve my pumpkin it’s nice to get around and look at others. The crowds are huge though so it’shard to get up close and get a steady shot.

The first one below won Best Overall and I knew it would as soon as I saw it!

Chadds Ford Great Pumpkin Carve (part 1)

Oh boy, I am so tired I can barely hold my eyes open! I just had to share some photos of our pumpkin at the carve tonight. We won’t know who the winners are until Friday.

Zoe sitting with our pumpkin. She thought it was important to share her Ariel lunchbox.

I’ve got my drawing on. Now I’m ready to carve!

My Mom hollows out the back and puts in the candles. No easy task, it takes just as long as the front design.

Has a ghost from the Brandywine Battlefield shown up?

No, that’s just Zoe and I!

But a real witch did show up to pose with my pumpkin!

Turn the lights off and the real magic begins!

We have a weiner!

Okay, that title is a little silly! We have a winner – 3 to be exact!
Thank you so much to everyone that entered. The response was absolutely amazing. My best giveaway yet! I hope to have one in December too so please continue checking this blog. If you left me a comment and I haven’t responded in some way yet, I’m very sorry, I’m working on it. We were gone most of the weekend at a friend’s house where I drank way too much red wine and was out of commission a good part of yesterday (no, I am not proud of that, I’m too old to be having hangovers:).
So I used a random number generator to help me choose the winners this morning and here they are (drumroll, please)…

1st prize, pendant of her choice – Laura of Laura’s Favorite Things
2nd prize, pendant of my choice – D.Suplicki of The Whimsical Cottage
3rd prize, postcards – Chali Rilyn’lyl

Thanks again!

Pumpkin carve excitement!

I’m so excited for my first pumpkin carve on Saturday at the Newtown Square Harvest Festival. This is a new event for me, I usually only do the Chadds Ford Great Pumpkin Carve, but I was invited to this one and it’s in a really nice area outside of Philadelphia. The MacNeill side of my family has some history in that area. Henry T. MacNeill, my great grandfather, sketched a lot of the historical buildings around there like the old St. David’s Church and cemetery.

The organizer told me I could bring a few things to sell so I painted 15 pendants and bought a spooky tree at the craft store to hang them from.

I also decided to create a painting of the Headless Horseman that will be the inspiration for my pumpkin carving design. I still have a way to go on this but here is a work in progress photo.

A few other fun things coming up…
I’m going to have a giveaway next week for one of my Halloween pendants so please check back. Also I will have a giveaway for a witch pendant on Mrs. B’s blog on October 18th. She has been hosting giveaways every day this month so please go check it out and sign up for some!
Lastly, I am the spotlight artist on the Whoa Etsy Horse Art Team’s blog. If you want to read a little more about me, click on this link.

Saturday is Caturday

I saw this on a few other sites so I thought I would make today Caturday! We’ve been really enjoying our new kitten, Pumpkin. I’m still calling him Pumpkin but my husband now calls him Jasper and my daughter calls him Toots. It’s so hard when you get a new animal and can’t find a name that fits.
He loves hanging out with me in my studio. He sleeps on the rocking chair I won in my first pumpkin carving competition, on a mat that I made with pumpkins on it.

Just finished 7 new pendants. Half will go to Etsy, the other ones will be on Ebay. I’d like to try and sell more on Etsy, the Ebay fees are killing me! Also toying around with starting a Halloween & dark art only blog called The Night Mare. I will also post new pieces for sale there.

Working on a lot of things this week. Started a Sleepy Hollow clock. Finishing up a big Sleepy Hollow chest which is spoken for but I will share the pictures when it’s finished. I’ve been invited to another pumpkin carve. This one is on October 10th in Newtown Square, right outside of Philadelphia. Should be fun! I really enjoy meeting people that get as much of a kick out of Halloween as I do. Oh, and tomorrow we are going to Longwood Gardens so check back for some pretty pictures tomorrow!

Jumped the gun…

I wasn’t supposed to decorate for Halloween until October 1st (so says husband).
Well, I jumped the gun today. I don’t have as many decorations as I would like but it’s a work in progress. I’m going to make a spooky tree this week by taking an old branch, spray painting it black, hanging ornaments off it and stick it in a cauldron.
Should be fun!
So here are a few of my decorations…

I collect these old paper cut outs. I just prop them up infront of my exsisting photos. Someday we’re doing this whole wall in built in shelves, until now it’s just a cheap dvd shelf.

I collect these guys too.

Black ivy garland with purple glitter looks great above the curtain. I’ve added 2 ravens and my favorite Jim Shore Headless Horseman.

The colors in this Klimt painting (“Goldfish”) look great with Halloween decorations!

The center channel self above hubby’s giant TV gets covered in spooky chachkis whether he likes it or not!

He’s not a balck cat but his name is Pumpkin!

Almost October

Yay, October is almost here! You can almost smell the candy corn in the air. Even the new kitten is getting in on the decorating fun! I’ve been thinking of changing his name to “Toots” because that little critter lays the world’s stinkiest farts. Honestly, how can a 2 pound animal produce such a foul odor? It’s beyond me!
I took a few quick photos this afternoon while I was yammering away on the phone.

This morning I completed the Salem Riding Club sign I spent all day yesterday working on. I thought I would put it up on my blog for sale for 2 days. If it’s not purchased in 2 days, I’ll put it on Ebay. It measures 11″ x 14″. Comes signed, varnished and ready to hang. My 3 year old is so in love with this piece since it shows a young witch riding a beautiful black horse. She told me this morning it is the prettiest thing I ever painted! I hope she lets me sell it:)

Price – $125.00 + shipping

And if your a big Sleepy Hollow fan like I am, please check out my current Ebay auctions. I have a handpainted box and an original painting of the Headless Horseman for sale.
