Signs of Spring

A huge flock of robins has taken over my holly tree this morning.

They’ve consumed nearly all the berries already!

Watching them tap sugar maples and make syrup at Lancaster Central Park this weekend.

I wish I had some maples in the back yard to make my own.

The maple syrup cotton candy we bought was so yummy!

A sign that spring is coming, primrose for sale at the grocery store.

My husband bought me this one since he knows how much I am longing to work in the garden.

I noticed that the winter aconite is blooming!

I love seeing flowers in the winter!

Hey, how did this get in here?

Snowmen riding snow horses is definately not a sign of spring

but we had fun making him this morning.

Garden Slumber

Somewhere,
under all that snow,
sleeps
the most beautiful garden.
This I know.

There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling. ~Mirabel Osler

Happy Valentines Day!

I know, I know, I am one day late but there’s nothing wrong with spreading a little love past the 14th. Last night marked the start of the Penny Feather Tree Charity Auction. I hope everyone that reads this goes to the auction this week and checks it out. Even if you don’t have the funds to place a bid, please add it to your watch list. The more watchers, the more exposure it will get. I am a member of PFATT, a group of primitive and folk artists, and sadly, one of our members was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. We all came together under the direction of Lori Davis of Vintage Palette Art to create ornaments for this tree. The proceeds will go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Inc.-Alabama Chapter.
Here’s a picture of the tree in all it’s glory. Isn’t it lovely?

Here’s a picture of my ornament.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Landis Valley in Winter

With the husband sick in bed and Zoe and I bored out of our minds, we decided to brave the cold weather and snow and head over to one of our favorite places, Landis Valley Museum. They are having their Winter Institute now so there are all sorts of things going on from learning to care for draft animals to blacksmithing. Zoe and I stopped and watched some of the students in the classes. But, we came for the animals and I got some great shots! I also got to cross off an item on my bucket list, scroll to the bottom to see!
Click on pictures for a larger view and don’t forget to leave me a comment and let me know which was your favorite!

I got to go on a sleigh ride!!!!!! Yippeee!!!

Of mice and jack o’ lanterns…

You can get a lot accomplished when there’s several feet of snow outside your door and the husband is home to watch the wee one. I finished my previously mentioned owl on the pumpkin sculpture and painted two fun welcome signs, one with a black Percheron and some spring flowers and another with a jack o’ lantern and a mouse peeking out of the nose. I suppose they shall both make their way over to Ebay sooner or later!

My daughter, who just turned 4, attempted her first horse drawing this week (I am so proud). Thought I would share. This is a large drawing on a piece of oversized construction paper I taped to the wall. She said the horse has a “million legs” (yikes). There are also some fairies around, Tinker Bell is green and Silver Mist is flying by on the top right. Bother fairies are holding flowers and the large horse has a baby horse with it and a rider.

Don’t forget! The Penny Tree Auction starts this weekend. Proceeds will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Read more about this wonderful work of art here, on the PFATT BLOG. I donated a glittery unicorn heart ornament for the tree.

Snow, snow and more snow!

Two major snow storms less than a week apart. I’m getting a wee bit tired of the white stuff now. At least the husband gets off work and I have time to create.
Here are some pictures from last Saturday’s snow…

View from the front yard.

Icicles on the back porch.

Sunset from the back yard.

And here is what I see out my studio window today…

Dining room window…

Out the front door…

Maybe we should try making snow ice cream. Here’s another recipe for snow ice cream.

PFATT Marketplace

Tomorrow is my first day as a vendor in the PFATT Marketplace, I’m so excited. I’ve been wanting to branch out with where I sell online since Ebay keeps upping it’s fees and I don’t always have the time to promote my Etsy shop. PFATT (Primitive Folk Art Trinkets & Treasures) seemed like a logical choice, there are so many wonderful folk artists on there.

Since we have 18″ of snow on the ground and 12″ more expected in the next 24 hours, I thought I would paint something to get people in the mood for Spring. So I painted two cute folk arty bunnies on canvas (8″ x 8″). They were inspired by the young rabbits I saw at the E-town fair last summer.

Okay, back to the painting table. With all this snow, I’m going to get a lot done in the next two days! I have a Halloween and a Percheron sign on my table half way finished. My owl on the pumpkin is nearly complete too. Can’t wait to share!

The cure for the winter blues…

Longwood Gardens of course!
We braved the frigid temps and practically ran from the car to the conservatory in search of some cheery color on Saturday. So sit back and relax and think of warmer days as you look at these pretty flowers…

I like this one below called coral pea.
The flowers were on vines that thickly covered several archways (see last photo).

I swoon for sweet peas!

Bouganvilla reminds me of a trip to Jamaica.

You can almost smell them, right?

Mother Natures works of art!

I’d like to pour a nice glass of wine, grab a book and sit on that patio set all afternoon!
Can you find it? It’s a little hidden. The fountain in the foreground made such lovely music.

360 Studio Tour

I cleaned my studio last night, how cathartic. Now I feel like I’m ready to create anything!
There are some areas that still need work like my painting table and computer desk. I love to see other artists studios so I thought I would share mine.

New!

Just finished up some new pendants for my Etsy shop and thought I would share.
When I get a spare minute I’ll be listing them. I really enjoy painting these little guys. Hard on the eyes but really fun. Whenever I wear one, people ask me where I bought it. Guess I need to remember to carry around business cards.

This black horse was inspired by one of those old Baroque dressage horse paintings by artists like Johann Georg de Hamilton. Click here for one of his paintings that I would love to have!

I brought this old box into my studio months ago for books and it’s become a favorite place

for my sweet little kitty Zazu to sleep, curled up, under my art table, right by my feet.

Now I can’t get rid of this ugly box.

You gotta love her:)

Lastly, thank you to all who commented on my last two posts – it really meant a lot to me. Two things near and dear to my heart, my daughter and horses. Someday soon I feel it’s all going to come together!

Trickster

I love ravens and I really enjoy painting them. My latest Painted Pony features a raven on both sides.

Many Native American cultures call the raven the Trickster. The story goes that he created everything but the sun, moon and stars which he stole by tricking the people that possessed them. I painted him on my pony at night. He’s just hung the moon and is finishing with the stars. One the one side he has a Swarovski Crystal “star” in his mouth. On the other side he is looking up at a crystal star. The horses eyes are crystals and I’ve painted a raven feather on the base with another crystal.

I have many tricksters in my yard every day – I call them squirrels! I set out a pumpkin for them to eat and they really seem to enjoy it. Sorry the photos aren’t better, I took them from my dining room.

A little old, a little new and one cute cat!

By my senior year in high school they ran out of art classes for me to take. Weird, I know, but it was a very small, rural school. I was allowed to make up my own class, Advanced Art, and I was given free rein to explore whatever type of media I wished (I even was able to grade myself – guess who got A’s?).

My photography class was down a distant hallway which held all of the industrial arts classes. Not many girls went down this hall except for me. I was always curious about the woodworking shop so I persuaded the instructor to let me do a sculpting project for art class (I think he was happy to see a girl in his class). After showing him my sketches, he hooked me up with a gorgeous hunk of wood and handed me some chistels and a small ax. The grain fit the piece so beautifully I torched it (very scary) and used a wire brush to bring out the beautiful pattern.

Well, here is my sculpture from 18 years ago. Recently rescued from my mom’s house and a little banged up. It’s the only piece of art I’ve decided to hang on to from my youth. I think it’s kind of cool.

“In Harmony”

Riding high on my win for the Trail of Painted Ponies design contest, I’ve created another original Painted Pony titled, “If Wishes Were Horses”. Inspired by the beauty of horses, childhood fantasy and dancing Lipizzaners. Painted with my favorite colors, purple and green, as the background and base colors. I’m really happy with how he turned out and will put him on Ebay today.

And one last photo just because she’s the finest thing I’ve ever created, my daughter Zoe showing some love to her kitty, Pumpkin!

Happy New Year indeed!

We had a wonderful time last night at our friends house in Lancaster. Nothing better than good food, friends, wine and a roaring fire! What a great way to spend New Years Eve – and for once I went easy on the wine. By the way, the absolute BEST sandwich: crusty roll, homemade pesto, fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, lettuce, prosciutto and a drizzle of balsamic!

Around 11pm last night I borrowed a computer to check my email and to my absolute delight I found out that I won 1st place in The Trail of Painted Ponies 4th Annual Holiday Design Contest!!! How cool is that! I was so excited, I could barely sleep. Click here for a link to the contest’s home page.

Here’s another design I entered into the contest.

Here ’s to a happy, healthy and successful New Year!

Winter Magic

I can’t believe it’s been 10 days since my last blog post! I don’t think it’s ever been that long between posts.
Perhaps the magic of the season has me under it’s spell. Maybe I’ve eaten too many Christmas cookies and I’m getting way too lazy! Whichever the case, I just completed a very magical winter welcome sign with a lovely winter spirit woman riding a gorgeous white horse. On the horse’s back is a show shoe hare. A few more snow bunnies are watching and following. She reminds me of a white witch or winter fairy, taking care of all the animals during the cold season.

I love how the snow sparkles in the sun. If the person who buys this sign would like, I’ll add diamond dust glitter accents so it sparkles like real snow!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I was the lucky recipient of several wonderful gifts including a new set of hard anodized cookware from my husband, a huge box of Halloween goodies from my mom (everyone else in my family thought this was weird) and a Yankee Flipper anti-squirrel bird feeder also from my mom. If you’ve never seen this feeder, it’s a riot. The squirrels go flying when they try to eat the seed. Here’s a video: LINK.

Whoa

I belong to several art teams and groups, all of them filled with wonderful artists and crafters: EHAG (Halloween art), PFATT(folk art), Whoa Ebay Group (horse art) & Whoa Etsy Team to name a few. I wish I had time to be more active in these groups but I do what I can, when I can.

Over a year ago I read an article about a group of artists that mailed a sketchbook around to each other. I thought this was such a fun idea and bought a sketchbook for my horse art group with the idea that we could pass it around and auction it off for a horse charity when it was completed. Along the way we hit a few snags. It got held up for various reasons (including my own). I am so happy to say that all the artists who wanted to participate now have their sketches and artwork complete and it will be up for auction soon! I finished my work just this afternoon and I wanted to share.
Here is the link to see all the sketches. Please scroll down and click on “older posts” so you get to see every one’s work. This book has made quite a journey and we are all so proud of each other!

Here are two of my sketches…

PS. I saw this squirrel outside my dining room windor this morning and he made me laugh. Just had to share…

Giveaway Winner!

The random number generator has chosen #131 – Possible Impossibilities Studio. I nearly had it draw another number since I hate to count that high:)

A big thank you from the bottom of my heart♥, to everyone who entered. It was such a joy reading all the comments.
I hope to have another giveaway in the Spring, perhaps on my birthday month, March.
I’m really sorry I wasn’t able to get to every one’s blog and leave a comment but this week I’m dealing with a sick child and a sick cat that had to go to the vet. The kitty is on the mend but the kid is still sick. :(

Back to the painting table now. I am working on a side saddle holiday sign and a few more pendants for the Etsy shop. Just completed this lovely Overo Paint Horse jewelry box at the request of a customer. Thought I’d share a picture of it!

I have some huge news I hope to share next month. It’s eating me up inside but I have to keep it a secret!

O Christmas Tree!

First, I want to thank everyone so much for all the comments on my last post (if you haven’t left a comment to enter my Christmas giveaway, please do). It has been a joy to read about every one’s favorite Holiday memories. I encourage my readers to check out the comment section of my last post and see what people have written. Some lovely, heartwarming stories!

So we’ve finally gotten our Christmas tree. It was a little difficult because they were all covered in snow! I usually rush out on the first snow and take tons of photos but I was too busy shopping and then painting this weekend.
Here’s the tree farm. Didn’t have to drive far, it’s only about a mile down our street.

Hmm… where is our tree?

Ah ha, here it is! Knock off a little snow, not too bad.

A few hours later, all gussied up. I’m loving the big, sparkly butterfly at the top I bought at Longwood Gardens this year.

And here’s what I painted. Wish I could have gotten a better photo because I’m really happy with how it turned out. Just too grey a day for photos. I would LOVE to go for a ride in a sleigh like this! This 12.5″ x 16.5″ original sign will go up on Ebay tonight for a 3 day auction.
