‘My Flower Child’, oil portrait WIP

I started this last night. This is my daughter when she was 5. She was my carefree, free spirited barefoot little flower child! We lived on an 80 acre farm at the end of a long lane on a dead end road. My kids ran around barefoot and wind blown and had an absolute ball! I homeschooled them until my daughter was in 7th grade. This portrait is very characteristic of her early childhood. I am wanting to capture the light and carefree spirit of this time.
This is 12 x 16 in oils. The face was drawn in with turp and oil paint. I am working on the lights and darks and just trying to get a feel for what I want to do.
I was going to paint this for a fundraiser/art exhibit but I am afraid I have to keep this one! LOL! I will put another painting in the art exhibit. :)
I saw the recipient of one of my Christmas commissions today. He made my day when thanked me and said the painting would be with him for the rest of his life. :) It was a portrait of his daughter and her horse. I was so very touched and honored that he would treasure the painting that much. That reminded me again of my goal to do some portraits of my own kids. I have some I did a couple years or so ago but now that I am doing oils I want to do more of them. So I will do this one and have another in mind for my sons.
To see finished work please visit my online gallery at http://www.suesteiner.com/ or stop by my art studio in Canton at 318 Cleveland Ave. #222 above Secnd April. I am there every First Friday and other times by appt.
Thanks for stopping by!

Girl on Horseback Portrait

Girl on Horseback in oils

This Girl on HorseBack equine painting was fast….I am rushing to meet my deadline and was only given this commission at the beginnning of the week :) but I think I pulled it off. This a Christmas present for a family friend from a daughter to her parents so I don’t mind the rush.

I do like combining horses with people since I do very much like to paint people so I am glad to be able to post this here too as another example of what I can do. This is tiny to pack in a horse’s face AND a person’s face. With more time and a larger canvas I could develop the background and refine the tack and bring more detail to the girl’s face but given the situation I did a simple background and simplified some elements for this commission. I think by doing that it also makes a statement the girl and the horse- this is about those two and not the rest of the world. :) Isn’tthat every horse crazy girl’s dream ? … and for this to be a present to the parents I think is this daughter letting her parents know what their gift (horse, support of her dreams) has meant to her. I am glad to help her with this gift to her parents.

I have one more Christmas commission to finish up and thats the wildlife elk painting. Ahhhh…. I think I am going to make it! Ahhhh. Deadlines are good, right? Definitely motivators.

Tonight is Shop Hop in Canton (Suite #222) and tomorrow is a painting demo at Lehman’s. Today is my kid’s last day at school for Chrismtas break. Whew! Feels like a whirlwind!

Thanks for stopping by!

Progress on new pencil drawing "Grandads’ Story"

Yeah!

A little progress  has been  made on “Grandads’ Story”…

Amelie is nearly finished -the tweaking and final detail layer will be done after I’ve drawn the second subject.

The dress has been mapped out and still needs a whole load of attention. I’ve decided to keep the pattern as it adds to the portrait (summer feeling and “colours”).

There will be more posted tomorrow..the flow has picked up again and always a good thing to go with!

Apologies for the scan quality…sadly it  looks as though my good old faithful scanner is just that: old and tired… Quality control will pick up: promise!

‘Faith Like a Child’ Portrait

Changes are coming in smaller details. This work in progress painting is for a special art exhibit in Wooster called Mosaic Art Exprience. The title of this will be “Faith Like a Child’.
I often paint animal faces but enjoy faces of all kinds! I have particularly enjoyed painting this beautiful little girl. I hope you enjoy watching it develop. To see finished artwork by me go to http://www.suesteiner.com
I am hoping to get this done in time for Canton’s Oct. First Friday. I have a studio above Second April Gallerie in Suite #222 so stop by to see the finished portrait in person!

Dog Art. People Faces and an Update

I finished the bull terrier today.
I did some more work on the portrait of the little girl. The paint is wet as you can see and the colors look a little faded out on the screen and she looks a little lop sided because I only worked on one eye… and the photo is taken at an angle…. but here is where I am now. :)

"Past to Present" - finished pencil drawing

Graphite pencil drawing of a young girl holding hands with grandfather copyright Sheona Hamilton-Grant, all rights reserved.

Here is Past to Present.

There will always be a gap between generations.  This is normal and healthy.

Past & present shows how much trust, respect, confidence, understanding and strength can be achieved by bridging generations.

I loved drawing this piece.

Many reasons spring to mind (new territory, new subject, new challenge, new approach…)

However, the main reason has to be (symbolism aside) rendering three totally different textures: hair, cotton and skin.

I used a 2B, 5B (for the dark jeans) and F (for skin).  The T-shirt I will admit was rendered by blending 2B which I then layered with F to get the smoothed crushed feeling. The paper used was Mellotex a very thick smooth white paper.

I’m glad I found the TLC this piece needed last week.

Now: it’s back to gorgeous 4 legged subjects.

Cheers for now

Back to work

Painting of a horse and a girl in progress. Copyright Judy Johnson.
It’s a rainy Saturday and a good day for painting. Made a lot of progress on the horse, but it’s a horse that I knew well and I keep tweeking things that aren’t quite right. Still not sure it’s quite “Missy” but I am still pleased with how the painting is coming along. I have a good photo reference but there is some distortion that I am trying to correct and maybe that is what is bugging me.
A friend and I have signed up for a pastel workshop in Aug. in northern Michigan. She has booked a room in a B&B and things are in place for a great adventure! Might be a few lakescapes in my future.
