Cowboys out on the trail, up in the high country. They stopped for a break and a bite to eat, and now must get back in the saddle and move out before it gets too late in the day. One rides a Paint, the other an Appaloosa and the other, who is in places unknown, rides a Buckskin.

This weekend is the annual Art in Bloom Art Show and Sale presented by the Gallatin Junior Service League. This show benefits women’s and children’s charities of the greater Gallatin, Sumner Co. TN area. I’m bringing along some more small wildlife paintings to add to the horses this year. For example, shown here is “Red Fox Backlight” , a 5 x 7 oil on canvas, $160. Our local fox has no idea how many images he has inspired ! I haven’t seen him for a while but hope he survived this winter, which for Tennessee , was a cold one.
Spring can’t be far away……makes me want to paint foals, baby goats, sheep and birds etc !
Come on out to the Bluegrass Country Club on Johnny Cash Parkway this weekend on Saturday and see what 40 local artists have to show ! It’ll be an eclectic mix of styles….. something for everyone.

The SILVER SECONDS AUCTION – Session 2 is under way.
Not quite the best & not garbage either! These prints are images that I think have merit but are not up to the standards of the work I put on my website and in galleries. That makes them SECONDS. They are all handprinted in my darkroom with the same meticulous care as my first run work. I am starting the AUCTIONS of these prints at $20.00 and bids are to be increased at $5.00 increments. Each auction will last for 7 days. This one will end Noon EST Monday, March 15th. Scroll down to see the photos. To bid on a photo….type your bid in the comments. Shipping price will be based on the winning bidders location. (if your bid does not show up in the comment box, be sure to contact me) http://silversecondsauctions.blogspot.com/

The Republican people of Texas decided to continue down the same road of self-destruction yesterday and voted to run Rick Perry for the Governor’s seat for an unprecedented 3rd term. Like a battered wife who is more afraid to leave, they decided to keep him for another 4 years (he’s been in the Governor’s mansion since George Bush took office in 2000). Perry’s main platform for re-election is “Texas is in better shape than the rest of the nation and the BEST place to live right now”. ????????? I agree with that, but it’s no thanks to him!
I refuse to vote him in again in November and I WILL NOT vote for a Democrat, so I guess it’s write-in time again. And NO, that’s not throwing my vote away. It’s staying true to my convictions.
Everyone I know complains about the politicians we have now and how we need term limits, yada yada yada, but when they are in the voting booth, they do the same old thing again and again. Well, as far as I am concerned, they deserve what they’re gonna get now. Business as usual – rising taxes and “public servants” taking care their own interests first. Dallas and Ft Worth just announced that they will probably have to raise property taxes to cover budget shortfalls – what a surprise – NOT. Hey, here’s an idea – how about cutting COSTS 10% every year – and if that means a 10% salary cut across the board for all city workers – I say they should be glad to have a job in today’s economy.
The sun is shining today and I intend to work my frustration off in the yard – doing something constructive. Fill your pantry with food…inflation is on its way.
Luke 23:2
And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king.”

“American honey” 12 x 13 Watercolor $1,200.00 Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.
Happy March! It’s typical March weather here. Heavy winds, rain, snow, rain, but it still has a Spring feel to it. I finished ‘American honey’. This painting will be saved out for Western Exhibit venues. I’m getting very anxious for the Sedona 2011 Gallery exhibit. A few more artists have been added to the roster. Some really, really nice stuff! I’m so honored to be invited to participate in this exhibit. I’ve started another Western scene watercolor. I’ve posted the start of that on my facebook fan page.
Have a great creative day!Debbie

I finally finished this painting and got it photographed. We’ve been having a lot of rain and cloudy days here in Maine and that makes for bad lighting for photographing in the studio. But I’m able to paint just fine!

4 X 5 Oil on linen panel $65

I’m eager to start the next book cover but the weather has not cooperated. Well, that isn’t actually true. I HAVE gotten LOTS of snow images lately (and made my 3rd snowman of the season). But I still need to get my image of the boy-wrapped-in-buffalo-robe-on-a paint-pony. As SOON as the weather looks cooperative and I can get to Nemo to borrow the buffalo hide, we’ll get this underway. I have several paint ponies available – including Tuffy. But I don’t know how cooperative he’ll be ridden bareback – he’s just the right image, though. Little and shaggy and hard as a rock and a nicely patterned paint. The model I have in mind is a 13 year old girl who could probably ride anything we put her on. I would like to test Tuffy first, though…not only to see if he’ll cooperate bareback, but also to see how he’ll handle the smell of a buffalo hide. Might be worth keeping the movie camera handy…

The composition of this painting is inspired by Frederick Remington’s “A Figure of the Night – The Sentinel”.
These are the woods behind my house. To get the feeling of cold moonlight, like Remington’s painting, I need to use more Viridian – a color that goes a long, long way. If I glaze the painting with a Viridian tint, I may get there….
I shall continue the snow series. Maybe by Spring I will understand the nature and color of WHITE!

I was watching that wonderful young Canadian mogul skier last night and as he was speeding down the hill over those bumps just a fraction away from out of control….I thought…gee, that is exactly how my life can feel sometimes. This past week was all about getting back in control. So I organized my office. I filed my papers. And more importantly, I found all the paperwork that had deadlines that I needed to be conscious of. And good thing too, because at least three of those deadlines are March 1st. I would have been very disappointed in myself I had let them pass. I have now posted each and every deadline on a calender right next to my computer. And it is a good thing that I did this, as more opportunities arrived this past week.
I sent out the images to be considered for the feature on my work in Rural Heritage magazine. I filled out the entry for Photowork ‘10. It is a juried show at the Barrett Art Center, here in Poughkeepsie, NY. This years juror is an associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. That one is well worth entering! Filling out the paperwork for the invitational show “Evoking Spirit” to open at the Maplebrook School in Amenia, NY on Derby day. And I need to decide what 3 pieces I want to enter into the New Jersey Equine Artist’s Association’s 2010 juried show. Two more forms need to be thought about..one for a juried show in photography and one an invitational/juried event that will be part of the HITS at Saugerties show season. Those are due soon too.
I got invited to send two pieces to the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo’s inaugural Equine Art Show. It will exhibited near Denver, Colorado in the middle of March. I will be sending two draft horse pieces. “L” and “Strath/Clyde(s)”.
I delivered “Frozen” and “Raindance” to the Hudson Opera House for the Columbia County Council on the Arts 14th Annual Juried Art Show. Here is a link to the press release. https://sp1.actemarketing.com/speasapage.aspx?X=5L0W10RTHV8SRX3800Z8W9 The opening reception will be this coming Saturday, from 6-8pm. I do think that is it funny that this was the year I was going to concentrate on creating and not on getting the work out there. And I have had so many invitations to show the work. I am grateful for it all.
I have been adding images to my Etsy store. B&W and Color giclees. There are several original Silver prints for sale there too. So take a look. http://www.etsy.com/shop/lechevalthehorse . And don’t forget. Just about any image on my website can be printed as a giclee reproduction. Just ask!
Have a great week. I will be getting things moving forward even more this week. And since I just ordered more paper for my darkroom. I expect to be getting some printing done later in the week.

Here’s a smaller painting that I just completed. This is an 8 x 10 oil on Signature linen panel of the finish of the 2008 Queen’s Plate. Not Bourbon, on the inside, just held off the filly Ginger Brew to win the mile and a quarter classic in a thrilling stretch duel. I’m pretty sure it was probably his tongue sticking out that made the difference!
This painting is available for $500 unframed for a limited time. If you’re interested, drop me an email!

This is the finished version of the painting in my banner, above. The painting is a 15 x 28 oil on linen of the first time past the grandstand in the Canadian Oaks a few years ago. I love the interaction of the riders as they find their positions early in the race.
This painting is framed and available for sale, for $2200.00. Just email me if you’d like more information.

I really enjoy painting this type of imagery. It’s that emotional connection between a human and a horse that I so love to paint.
