“You should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

The Painting: This is part of my Backyard Blooms for 2009. It is a series where I am blocking the painting with acrylic before painting it in oils. It is a longer process but the painting seems richer for the extra time.

The Thought: I read something from “A Gentle Thunder” written by Max Lucado.

“You want to make a difference in your world? Live a holy life.

Be faithful to your spouse.
Be the one at the office who refuses to cheat.
Be the neighbor who acts neighborly.
Be the employee who does the work and doesn’t complain.
Pay your bills.
Do your part and enjoy life.
Don’t speak one message and live another.

People are watching the way we act more than they are listneing to what we say.”

Max is such a gifted writer with a direct heart string to God. I have never picked up a book of his I didn’t like.

Reflecting on this passage makes it seem simple. And it truly is simple. We make it more difficult on our own. I am the biggest complainer to my poor husband… I use to not be a complainer. I took ALL of it in stride and didn’t say a word, but after years of marriage and a bit of aging, I have become more verbal of my feelings so I complain worse. That is something I need to work on daily.

The next one I fail miserably on is “do your part and enjoy life.” I think every one else is doing this but I have totally forgotten what it is like to enjoy life. It seems like I work twenty four seven. Where is my trust in Him that He will provide? How do you draw the line in our human brain of “I am responsible for this, I have to work.”?? Oh Lord, hear me, I would LOVE to take part of my day and forget everything around me and ENJOY LIFE. (… and the little voice inside says.. then you will have twice as much to do tomorrow.) What do you do about the little voice?

And the last one… eek, here I am sharing with you a message and I don’t live it…Seems like it is time for an attitude adjustment.

There are those that slack off and don’t take responsibility and they are definitely out there enjoying life. Then you have on the opposite side those that work and never take the time to live. Which one are you?

Read over that list above from Max….time for positive change.

“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” John 13:34

The Painting: This painting was a commission piece by the wife of the Swiss Ambassador to Berlin. She had bought several pieces of artwork from me and from my son Morgan, including a gorgeous Texas Flag he painted. She is a Texan transplanted to Europe and she was missing her roots!

The Thought: Care thoughts are roaming around in my head. On Tuesday, Terry and I drove 135 miles round trip to take our dogs back to their original vet in Ponder, Texas. Dr Phil Henderson owns the Ponder Vet Clinic and he is absolutely the best in Texas. We had used a Dallas vet the past year living here in the city, but I struggled with all the extra meds they wanted my dogs on. The women at the clinic in Ponder know our babies and they are so good to them. The people that work there want to be there, it is more than a job. They are graced with the responsibility of caring for the animals in that area. It was worth the day long trip.

When you say “I CARE” for you, you are sharing the love of God with your family and friends. You become a ‘comforter’, an ‘encourager’ and a prayer warrior. When you say “I CARE” about the world, you are thoughtful in how you live here on the earth, respecting creation. The environment must be protected and you easily do your part to keep a balance.

God created you with a loving heart and a powerful mind. The sensitivity to others is a gift…pass it on. “Care” today and everyday with a giving heart in the Spirit of our caring Father.

“Summer Garden” Flower Garden Oil Painting by Laurie Justus Pace

“Let the fig tree teach you a lesson. When its branches become green and tender and it starts putting out leaves, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you will know that the time is near, ready to begin. Remember that all these things will happen before the people now living have all died Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Matthew 24:32-35

The Painting: This is an archived painting but after viewing it, I may be inspired to do a “this year” painting with the same color palette.

The Thought: The verse was on Bible Verse this morning and it gave me pause to think. I always knew eventually the earth would pass away…but heaven too?

From all my reading and studies I know there is no “set” time for the second coming of Christ. There seem to be a lot of “watchmen” out there filled with suggested times and predictions, but no one knows.

Not wanting to jump into the writing and debate of Revelations, I will use this verse in a slightly parallel purpose. It is an everyday purpose. A purpose to live today. Reflecting for a moment on the words “let the fig tree teach you a lesson”… the lesson about life in general. With birth and life and growth there are seasons in our lives with lessons to learn in each of them. There is purpose in living every day. Only the Father knows what is ahead for each of us. No one can predict what will be your life. Only the Father knows when it is your time die. Here too can be “watchers” and “worriers”, but if you are watching and worrying about when you will die, you are not living your life and serving Him with purpose.

The future is today. We do not know what is tomorrow. Live this day to it’s fullest potential and be living God’s word. Then you will be ready.

Laurie

“No one knows, however, when that day or hour will come neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son; only the Father knows.Be on watch, be alert, for you do not know when the time will come. It will be like a man who goes away from home on a trip and leaves his servants in charge, after giving to each one his own work to do and after telling the doorkeeper to keep watch. Watch, then, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming it might be in the evening or at midnight or before dawn or at sunrise. If he comes suddenly, he must not find you asleep. What I say to you, then, I say to all: Watch!” Mark 13:32-37

Irises, finished!

This is a commission that a regular to my studio in Canton had asked me to do a couple months ago. This painting is based on Van Gogh’s ‘Irises’ painting. That alone is kind of intimidating. I think too the idea of all those irises kind of kept me from moving forward on this after I got about half way thru. I ended up hitting the wire for a deadline so just plunged back into it. A funny thing happened as I did. I discovered that the faster I worked and the more I gobbed paint on the better those irsies were looking! Maybe that is my own delusion but hopefully I learned something this! :) I will be able to take this to my studio tonight for First Friday — wet but it will be there!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great 4th of July!

“You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 2:1

The Painting: This is a second painting I was working on when Barbie was visiting. I finished it up yesterday. It began with a bottom layout in acrylic for value placement. From this point there are layers of oils piled on top using a wide brush.

The Thought: Not sure of what it is, but I have been “down” for two days straight. Hopefully today will be better. Anytime I ate or drank water it felt like a tightening in my stomach, like an old fashioned tummy ache. Did not get to go visit our best friends in Mt Vernon yesterday…so I am a bit sad. Hopefully today I can eat again.

Terry continues to rip out the bathroom in our bedroom. The shower is completely torn out and tonight I think he intends to pull out the toilet and the rest of the floor. I suggested he stay on schedule because getting up at night makes it hard to remember to stumble down the hall to the other bathroom. He is actually working today. Normally he is off on Mon/Tues but there are impt meetings at the airport and so he works 7 days straight. It will be a long long week for sure.

The baby has begun to babble and giggle. Stacey phoned late yesterday afternoon to let us hear her laugh. She was watching the food network.

I have been studying in the bible where David is taking over from Saul. There are so many events happening around those two men, it is difficult to keep up with them both. There are many players on each side of the turnover of power, and there are many deaths.

In comparison our lives seem simple with out the physical battles of warfare surrounding us and the every day anxiety of survival. Each battle has a reason in our lives. If we didn’t experience the battles, we would not be stronger. Out of each blooms a grace from Him. His good is there to pour out into your life.

There are times you cannot find goodness or grace in your life. That is when I would remind you to seek Psalm 20.

Psalm 20

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.

3 May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings.
Selah

4 May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.

5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious
and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the LORD grant all your requests.

6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he answers him from his holy heaven
with the saving power of his right hand.

7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

8 They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.

9 O LORD, save the king!
Answer us when we call!

Be assured that the grace of God is with you always.

Jun 21 – Recovering, and the 30 x 24 Still Life

The still life is about as finished as it’s going to be, seeing it now. It didn’t take too much fiddle-arting around to get it to this stage with those open acrylics. I finished the “real” color note of that purple plate by breaking the Color System rules to get that luscious of a plate color–using the cools in the light. In man-made objects we can do that, and it creates a wondrous excitement in otherwise follow-the-rules paintings.

I’ve not done still life in a LONG time, and found it different from the old days. I think I need to do more, perhaps some smaller subjects, and revisit the onions and other fruits. It will come. I do love the energy of this painting in the brushwork.

Sorry about not emailing more often–last weekend I crashed the scooter and have been limping around here feeling sorry for myself. The bruises and cuts are nothing serious, except the one on my hip where I hit the pavement. Dang, that asphalt is HARD. I’ve got more colors than the Color System in my left leg! I need to keep it up for a few hours each day. Turns out my aikido training again saved my hide, because it could have been MUCH more serious. As it was, I hit and rolled and did a 360 on my shoulder before coming to rest on my back. I just went with the motion, and didn’t brace, and perhaps saved my 60 year old bones. Scooter’s fine, just some cosmetic damage.

So I’m fine now, and rarin’ to go into the July Color Boot Camp.

Contemporary Flower Oil Calla Lily Painting by Laurie Pace

“For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” Deuteronomy 30:16

The Painting: Cool colors and a thick paint applied with a palette knife. The subtle softness of the petal of this flower was captured through the thick application of paint pulls giving it a truly dimensional effect.

The Thought: One of our neighbors handed Terry a “copy” of an article from a published program from the TOUR OF HOMES in 1960 here in Dallas. There was our little home in it.
What amazes me is our “dining room” is really suppose to be a den. The only dining area in the house is what most of us would term the Breakfast area. It is not very large so it definitely would not handle a dining room set.

I can’t help but wonder what the visions were of this architect. The front rendering of the house is the same but the prior owner did heavy landscaping. That is part of or issue right now with drainage. I think Terry will be renting a baby machine to level out the dirt and move it around to put the grade falling from the house instead of running into the house.

I wish I could have seen the circular fireplace of copper and glass mosaic. WOW. We would need pictures to even begin restoring that. And there was a built in couch on the circular curved wall of stone in the living room. Not sure how comfortable that would have been!

We have been working on the garden room in the REFOCUS project to turn your eyes away from the walled off growing ugliness of the house next door. Terry put in huge palms yesterday. I have to get in there today and water everything and try and clean it up. Then I can take pictures.

You truly never know what exists in someone else’s mind…. as I would love to know so much more about this house and it’s original design. We can never go back to yesterday to find that…only forward with today. We may not have tomorrow… so only today we need to be the best we can be for God and for ourselves. Live in this moment and make the best of the day right now.
My mother, aka Mema, and baby Lauren, my grand-daughter.

‘To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.’ When God takes something from your grasp, He’s not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on this sentence… ‘The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

colors of summer…. floral art

Gerber Daisies, 16 x 20 acrylics

Its funny how colors and images can bring back seemingly unrelated memories. I painted these flowers today while on my deck. Its a beautiful summer day. After I painted this it definitely brought back memories of sailing on Lake Erie when my husband and I were dating. I know it is a painting of flowers! I looked at the painting more closely and realized the triangular composition, the bluish greens and the bright reds and orange likely brought about the association to the sails on the sailboats, summer time and sparkling water as the light reflected off the lake. Those are happy summer time memories for sure! Water, beach, sun, breeze… ahhh summer time!

This month I will be featuring new floral art in my studio in addition to my usual animal and equine art. I am itching to get back to my southwest style horse painting now that it has had time to set up so stay tuned to see how that shapes up.

I also will likely begin a cat pet portrait in the next few days. This is a memorial portrait of a big orange tabby with a beautiful ruff and the kindest ginger-y eyes. I am really looking forward to painting this one too.

Poppies Are Red

This is the time of year that I really wait for all winter. As colors start popping in the gardens and the eye is drawn to each splash of red, and blue and yellow. as each perennial flower opens, announcing it’s blooms. These days the poppies are singing their song with a complimentary note from the Shasta daisies. I have been forcing myself to stay in the studio and work on the commissions I have to finish for clients… and on the new works in the making.

Addie [ our eye impaired Corgi] demands time for walking and loving as she heals… along with her bored companion, Nell the little terrier-ist. So on my breaks from the studio, we walk around the gardens and make mental notes about what needs to be done to maintain the flower beds. It is an never ending labor of love.

So here is a sneak preview of what is happening in the gardens as I write. Enjoy …..and I need to get back to the art work at hand!

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Exodus 20:17

A PAINTING A DAY: This was painted a few years ago as a commission painting. I have not had time to take pictures of my work from the weekend yet, so I pulled from my archives.

My Thought for the Day:

There is a song from Vacation Bible School from many summers ago, when my grandson was only 5. I led the music for bible school and the theme song was “I AM A PROMISE”. The words have never left my brain and my grandson is almost 12 now.

I think it went like this:
“I am a promise
I am a possibility
I am a promise with a capital “P”
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learnin’ to hear God’s voice
And I am tryin’ to make the right choice
I am a promise to be anything God wants me to be.

I can go anywhere that He wants me to go
I can be anything He wants me to be
I can climb the high mountains
I can cross the wide sea
I’m a great big promise you see!

I am a promise
I am a possibility
I am a promise with a capital “P”
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learnin’ to hear God’s voice
And I am tryin’ to make the right choice
I’m a promise to be anything God wants me to be
Anything God wants me to be!”

I think so often in our lives we limit ourselves. He wants each of us to shine with the gifts He has graced on us. We have mentors in our lives that help us begin journeys, but it is up to us to find our path and experience our growth in our life in our own way.

Yes, you are a promise and a possibility…a great big bundle of potentiality…. celebrate life today and who you are, just as He made you as you go forth to your possibilities!

Jun 9 – The Acrylic Still Life Continues

Now I’m so much more pleased with this one. It is coming along well, with glazing done with traditional gloss medium and colors from the Open Acrylics, blending and unifying the upper left corner, and defining the green plate. The red grapes went in very fast, and yet are not painted as individual grapes. I’ll still add much more, and have put off adding the lavender leftmost plate. I need to pull the entire composition together before making this bold statement.

I’ve thought about time of day for this painting, and it is definitely morning. I added bits of warm yellow to the whites, and of course there are all sorts of grayed purples in the shadows. Yes, even interiors can reflect the time of day–it just makes a better painting overall, in my opinion.

Every once in a while I like to share with you other artists’ work, someone who has been in a Color Boot Camp. Since my epiphany of being a teacher vs. being an artist first, I want to share this site with you–this is my friend Louise Mellon, of Aiken, South Carolina. She paints what she loves and what is around her–mostly horses and their companions. I’m always pleasured by her courage in her work and her stunning designs. Check her work in progress through her blog: http://louisemellon.blogspot.com/

OK, OK…. if you want to be on the list for the October workshop, I’m going to take names. (Now stop pestering me! Just kidding!) I don’t want to have to go to a lottery system, yet I understand everyone’s frustration about not getting into a Color Boot Camp.

June 8 – Back to the Normal after the Workshop

As I continue to cover the canvas, I’m working on the lower 2/3, bringing the colors back with the new, hopefully more effective design. The flowers “grew”, and the plates moved down and off a bit. Again, I’ve moved to the Open Acrylics by Golden, to give me some more working time to make decisions. Although I love my traditional acrylics, working on a larger canvas tends to make me hurry when I’m using them.

I got a call from the Escondido gallery–suggesting that most of his clientele have homes that react better to “warmer” palettes. But he said that of all the artists’ work he took over to show one of his high-end clients, it was my work that worked best. The Color System… what can I say???

Well, it is back to the “New” normal… It is mighty quiet around here now, after all the new Boot Camp graduates left yesterday, Sunday. The July workshop is full, and I’m looking at the second weekend in October for the next three-day Riverside Boot Camp. Those of you on the East Coast still have an opportunity to relax and paint your socks off in Maine in September. There’s another three-day workshop scheduled for August in Sebastopol, but at this time is only open to their membership. I’ll keep you posted if that changes.

Here’s a photo from the workshop that was kindly sent to me from the Canadian contingent after she arrived back home. I send it to show the rack behind me with the work of the students from the first day–they did either moonlight or misty light paintings and the new “silly painting” using just the CS values. I’m wearing one of the “I survived Color Boot Camp” aprons, and of course, Sparky is doing his “bird on a wire” act.

Happy painting!

Jun 6 – The Workshop for June and that Still Life

“When in doubt, paint it out,” I said a few days ago. This 30 x 24 has been sitting on my easel since then, asking for attention. Today, after the workshop was over, I invited those interested to stick around and see how this would be changed. Most opted to continue painting after a great idea of pizza delivered to the door. They are dedicated!
So I redesigned the structure on this painting, now using the Golden Open acrylics instead of the traditional acrylics I started with. Fun, juicy and fast painting! Here I’m blocking in the lower half, and I glazed over a lot of the upper half with yellow ochre and gloss medium.

I redrew the plates and the vase larger and expanded the floral portion to more properly balance the composition. And just approached it as though it were differently composed in the first place. I like it better already!

The workshop is going well, with ten Color Boot Campers delving into nuances of the Color System, and taking control of their painting decisions, instead of letting the source material drive their work. It’s refreshing to see the new paintings coming off their brushes! More tomorrow, and perhaps one or two will let me use their work in an email to you.

The second image is what the floral looked like after I did the major surgery with the brush and painted OUT the lower two thirds. Hey, I painted it once, I can do it again, and probably better. So it goes.

June 2 – Paintings gone Wrong and Beauty Elsewhere

Uh oh. Some times an artist forgets what they’re doing, and I’m happy to report to you that this painting is becoming a great teaching example of that!

Those lovely grays are gone now, and I caught myself getting so enamored with the small white rose, that I forgot one of the things I stress with students, “Don’t rush the focal point!” So although this painting has some good things going on with it, I have a feeling that it is going to undergo some major surgery shortly.

Hey, this happens to all of us. But most of ‘em arteests aren’t courageous (or stupid) enough to share the ones that aren’t going so well with the general public. I’ve had an epiphany of knowledge that I’m a teacher first and an artist second, so I see the greater good in sharing ALL the issues with painting, and that includes problems. Since I took this last image, I’ve painted OUT the lower 2/3 of the canvas. Gone. “When in doubt, paint it out.” So it goes. See, I, too, have to slap myself up side the head and put myself back on track. The painting will get much better because of it. After all, “it’s just paint”.

On another note, here’s a bit of beauty from my yard… after I took the image of the picket fence, I walked up to the front patio, turned around and took this second image over the koi pond to the rose garden. I love scenes like this… it may end up as a painting, too.

June 1 – Continuing with the Acrylic Still Life

I’m still covering the canvas using only the cool colors–the whites you see are the canvas itself, which flies in the face of my normal procedure of toning the canvas. But since the source material is so harmonious and subtle in coloration, I wanted to use the whate canvas to “keep the sparkle” as I continue to develop the shapes.

Yes, not a BIT of warm in here yet, and the harmonies of color are really pleasant. I’m using the “Trifecta” of the sky trio with white to create all those areas of gray variations. All you Color Boot Camp Graduates will know those!

On the rest of the canvas, I’m just putting in the general shapes of the things–such as the grapes and the plate shadows. There is a bit of pure on the vase now, in the shadows on the left. Ultramarine and white. It looks so warm and advancing because with the Color System, if you use a cool color solo with just white added, and surround it with other cool mixes that have two or three others combined, there’s an optical illusion created. That illusion makes the purer colors advance, and appear warmer. Can you see it?

On other news, I’m clearing out the workroom for the June COLOR BOOT CAMP here this coming weekend. Twelve people are going to fill their heads and canvases with the time of day system that seems to be revolutionizing painting for people who want good color, every time.

I’m putting in a white picket fence around my rose garden this week–here’s an image of it in process. OK, all the stereotypes about “houses with white picket fences” come to mind, but I’ve always loved pickets and roses, and now I have both right outside my studio windows. Life is good. But then we also have a swarm of bees that came into the back yard this afternoon, so maybe not. A local beekeeper is coming by this evening to take them for his hives. That’s the best for the bees, and they’ll be gone before they can get hungry and testy.

May 31 – Starting the Still Life in Acrylics

This is a 30 x 24 canvas, and the first lay-in of the large shapes is presented for you in this lesson on painting a still life using the Color System.

These colors are blends from the cool box, and create a harmony of related hues, and every one of them is at least two hues from that box. There is NO pure color at this stage. All of the shapes that are going in are going to play background roles for the coming layers.

I’m also attaching the photo of the setup I’m using, as this is from life. Sometimes the setup and arrangement of objects is just as important, if not moreso, than the actual painting! This is set up in my studio to the left of my easel, and is lit with one 50 watt halogen spotlight. I chose these objects from my “stash” for their unity of color and analogous relationships. It will be fun to see what happens with the Color System and my brushes!

I hope you’ll enjoy the journey through this painting with me…

I’ve Been Playing…..

I’ve been playing… probably because I soon will need to pack and move to the new studio. Demos are starting up this week and I have a commission I need to finish. So what do I do??? Play with finger painting!! I sound like my 12 yr old when it’s time to do homework! ~In my defense though I did get 3 paintings shipped off this week! In my son’s defense he actually is good about getting homework done.~

I will say there is value in finger painting. It is relaxing. It is freeing — you can’t get bogged down in details- you just go by feel and experiementation. And hopefully I have gotten the distractibility out of my system so I can paint walls, gather supplies, make lists, pack boxes, frame and mat. The next two weeks will be busy. I want to be ready to go for May’s First Friday. I also would like to get my commission completed before then. So now you know and maybe by virtue of telling you I can get all that I need done. :) If you are coming to First Friday stop by Second April Art Gallerie Studio #207 !

thanks!
