Plein Air With A Friend

We had a plan. Renee Lammers and I met at a local farm to paint together. When I arrived Renee was there before me and already into her paint. It was such a beautiful day out…very bright and very windy. But we were able to find a spot out of the wind, protected by the house and barn behind us. We choice different angles to approach our paintings from… of the farm’s chicken house. The local hen-ladies pecked and scratched around us…and gave their approval of our work! A resident kitten was fascinated with my pens as I sketched my paper..and kept leaping into my lap singing a spring song and waiting my full attention! My finished work has muddy kitten paw prints added into the mixed media!!

I started out working on a pen and ink sketch, and then thought I would like to add some color….it was a good thought, but not very well thought out, as I had drawn on drawing paper and so my finished painting is a bit buckled…but I had fun! …got out into the fresh air and sun….and got wind burnt!! Renee is determined she will make a plein air painter out of me yet!

Renee’s oil came out a lot better than mine! No cat paws included.

Renee’s oil, above…. with the sun kind of bouncing off it in this shot.  Check her blog to get a better shot of the finished product!! Okay, Renee….where are we going tomorrow???

Landis Valley in Winter

With the husband sick in bed and Zoe and I bored out of our minds, we decided to brave the cold weather and snow and head over to one of our favorite places, Landis Valley Museum. They are having their Winter Institute now so there are all sorts of things going on from learning to care for draft animals to blacksmithing. Zoe and I stopped and watched some of the students in the classes. But, we came for the animals and I got some great shots! I also got to cross off an item on my bucket list, scroll to the bottom to see!
Click on pictures for a larger view and don’t forget to leave me a comment and let me know which was your favorite!

I got to go on a sleigh ride!!!!!! Yippeee!!!

A Simple Life

I recently completed this commission of a beautiful restored farmhouse in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It was once the home of a wonderful woman I know who is now 91. She spent her childhood there, living a simple life.

I recently completed this commission of a beautiful restored farmhouse in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It was once the home of a wonderful woman I know who is now 91. She spent her childhood there, living a simple life. My husbands parents and his childhood were also spent on beautiful farm properties such as this one. His early childhood and teen years were spent working on a 90 acre dairy farm in Coopersburg, Pa. His father also owned a 60 acre farm where they farmed corn, hay, soybean, and wheat. Eventually, development took over the farms in the area and it made more sense to sell property to home builders. Most of the old stone farmhouses are now owned by people who have the means to maintain and restore them. I believe that is what an old stone farmhouse deserves, but it is still sad to see the area and the simple way of life changed so dramatically.

Farm landscape painting.

Here is a painting of a local farm, Acrylic on canvas (9″x12″). Available for sale for $275.00. I really enjoyed painting the light on the silver roof and white walls of the barn. Every painting I paint I learn a little more. I find painting is a great way to relax and let the stress of work just melt into the background. This piece is available for purchase along with the Boot Still Life painting, Acrylic on canvas, $250.00 (14″x11″).

If you are interested in purchasing a piece please contact me at
equineartist21@yahoo.com and list art in the subject line.

Landis Valley Farm Museum

On Sunday my father treated us to a member ship at the Landis Valley Farm Museum. This weekend they were having their Harvest Days which is my favorite time of year to go. It’s nice to know that I can got to all the events there for a year free now! In the spring they have a great herb and heirloom plant/seed faire they also have a wonderful event for children at Christmas and on Sundays in the summer I believe they have ice cream socials. Plus Zoe (and I) can learn all sorts of cool things like how they used to make lace or candles or how they baked bread in an outdoor over. How to use oxen to plow fields, dying, spinning and weaving wool, what an old fashioned general store looked like. I find the whole place fascinating!

Pumpkin Farm

I recently discovered that an Amish farm about 3 miles down my road sells a wide variety of pumpkins in the fall. I knew this place selled dried gourds year round but I had no idea that they had so many for autumn decorating! Needless to say I was in pumpkin heaven (an the prices were great too). I love how they’ve set up their displays from the pumpkins in the barn windows to the big curly tree branch in on old milk can to the stack of crates with different varieties of gourds labeled for curious minds like me. So if you’re in Lancaster County, check it out. It’s on Landisville road between Landisville and East Petersburg, right around the corner from Roots Market.

Donkeys and Miss Kitty mural taking shape….

I am still in the ‘roughed in’ stage of the kitty cat, Miss Kitty. She’s still looking alittle monkey-ish but that will change as I add layers. (You can follow this blog by clicking on the side bar to get regular updates).

From her owner’s description Miss Kitty is quite the Diva of the house. She probably wouldn’t be caught dead setting her prisitne white paws anywhere NEAR those funny looking long eared animals let alone a barn… but their quaint backyard setting wouldn’t be complete without Miss Kitty dominating the ‘lesser’ creatures. I will share with you the setting in which this mural will reside. I am hoping to get it finished by this weekend. The beautiful weather, First Friday at my art studio, my kid’s umpteen sports activities, the mowing and my barn time are competing for my attention butI am putting this and the other mural on the top of my ‘to do’ list. I’ve got a 3 cat commissioned portrait next in line to do which has a very short definite deadline due to the fact this will be a wedding present. :) This is the second wedding present I’ve paint in the last month or so. Such an honor to create a special gift for such a special occasion. So I have the blinds drawn so as to not look outside at the beautiful day and I will carry on! Just so you don’t feel bad for me I have reserved this evening for riding time. No sports for the kids tonight- they had a school day out today which is socializing day in which they have fun at parks etc. so new kids to the school can get aqcainted. I really like the idea and love how the school fosters the kid’s relationships.

Okay- enough chatting… time to get back to my easel. Enjoy your day and please stop by my web site or studio if you’ve not seen completed artwork by me.

County Fairs

The end of summer in Lancaster County means that it’s fair season. I absolutely love these county fairs. Not for the rides or food but for the animals!

Here are a few photos from the Elizabethtown Fair last night. The E-town Fair has hands down the best petting zoo. The have a large fenced in area that must have 15 sheep and goats and 5 new born calves to pet. They also have alpacas, a chick hatchery and a carpeted table that is full of young bunnies for the kids to pet, hold and brush.

If you want to go to a fair in PA this summer/fall, check out this website!

Adorable lop eared bunny.

Alpacas & llamas always look like they want to bite your head off.

I love these two cows. I may have to paint them some day!

Jul 20 – Colorful Study of a Goat Kid

Ah, the heat is cooking my brain, so I hide out in the cool studio (daylight basement, stays in the 80s when the outside temp is over 105!) and do work here. There are four dogs here, too, and everyone else who cannot come in (goats, horse, chickens) have plenty of shade and water.

Today’s job was to organize and sort some of the thousands of photographs I have taken over the years. But (no surprise–ha!), I got distracted! This image of one of the many goat kids I’ve had and it just asked to be painted. So I brought out a 12 x 12 box canvas (with 1.5 inch depth) and did this colorful study of the shadow sides on this little fellow.

These colors are stated more strongly than some of my other paintings, because it was/is my intent to make the coloration easy to understand. It’s a great morning light lesson painting to learn how to mix those shadow areas on a white animal. It’s an oil, and painted around the edges, so no frame is needed. Available to a new or returning collector for $295. Got goats?

Congratulations to new collector John Wickham of Los Angeles, California on his purchase of “Sycamore Leaf” from my collection.

Greener Pastures

One of my neighbors has a german shepherd dog. My other neighbor across the street has cows. The cows will come right up to the road when the dog is out front. They stand all lined up watching the dog play with its owner. Maybe they think he looks like a wolf but why come TO the dog? No one said cows are smart. I wanted a picture of them all in a row but by the time I got my camera this is the shot I got. I am calling it Greener Pastures. You can purchase this and other digital art as well as original oil paintings at my studio or online. Visit my web site for details.

Lancaster County

It’s what I like about living in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, you walk out your front door and you’re bound to see farm animals sooner or later. Zoe and I just walked across the street and through some woods and weeds (and poison ivy – yikes) and we found this bucolic scene complete with cows, mules, creek and buttercups. Wish I could have gotten close enough to the Canada geese couple and their newly hatched goslings, they were still yellow and fluffy! The funny part about the area where I live is that you have new $500,000+ homes and Amish farms right next door. I think it that big house looks out of place, don’t you?

Belgians in the Field, Daily Painting

Belgians in the Field, 12 x 24 oils on hardboard

by Sue Steiner

I painted this as a daily painting after watching my neighbors work up their field the day before. My favorite sight this time of year is to see the amish work horses in the fields. They are amazing to look at — my hope is that I was able to capture even just a bit of that in this painting.

I will have this, along with other artwork at my new studio in Canton in time for May’s First Friday. I am in studio #207 above Second April Art Gallerie.

Photo Shoot

I spent the day today with Jodi Miller, a Columbus based free lance photogragher. She met with me at Hobby Farms Magazine’s request to take photos that will go along with an article featuring my equine and animal art. In the photo above Jodi is taking some photos of me by my Amish Work Horse Hitching Post mural at Lehman’s that I completed last year. If you are in the Kidron area be sure to stop in the Buggy Barn at Lehman’s to see the murals. Jodi also spent time on my farm photographing my horses, farm and home studio. Look for the article in the July/Aug issue!Thank you! Sue Steinerequine and animal artist pet and horse portraits

Photo Shoot for Hobby Farms Home Magazine

I am preparing for a photo shoot with a photographer from Hobby Farms Home magazine. She is coming into town tomorrow weather permitting. The plan is for her to photogragh my barn, my horses, my art studio and then visit my murals at Lehman’s for an article that will be in the magazine in the July/Aug. edition featuring my farm animal art. I am really excited about it. The magazine is a favorite of mine with beautiful photography and interesting articles right in line with my interests- gardening, small scale family farming, horses, country lifestyle and family.

We had beautiful weather at the beginning of the week- clear, warm, almost spring like but today winter is back. I suppose its to be expected in Feb. in Ohio!

After I finish writing this blog entry I am heading to my studio to work a little more on my ‘Baby Face’ foal painting. There is a possiblity that I will be doing a video as well so we’ll see how the day goes. Maybe this painting will be in the video as a work in progress? I do wish this snow would blow away and the sun come out!!! Spring, we are ready anytime!!! Take care! Clear Crisp Morning

Yesterday we got a very welcome break from winter. I took my camera out with me when I headed to the barn to feed horses. The sky was crystal clear, the hard frost from the night before still clung to the branches and fences creating this wonderful, lacy effect. I’ll share with you some of the beautiful views around my house and pasture.

The photo of the paint is my amish neighbors farm. I always laugh when my horses gather at the fence and their horses gather at their fence just to stare at each other a while! Yesterday though hunger beat out socializing as everyone was intent on the promise of green grass in the not too distant future.

Thanks for stopping by!
