Nov 2 - Aspens progressing, and jury duty.

If you’ll compare this image with yesterday’s, you’ll note that although the value structure has not changed that much, there is a lot more “stuff” in the darker areas.

I’ve come to realize a few things in painting so many pictures over the years–the more time I spend on the areas that aren’t all that important, the better the end result in the painting. Some might say I approach painting by backing into it. Perhaps so, however this method of not even drawing the focal points until much later int he process has helped to make my work cohesive from edge to edge.

I am still completely in the cool boxes, and using mixes of three or more colors to create and modify the greens and darks that are going in. The yellow in the aspens-to-be is the shadow orange, yellow ochre. The bit of orang on the right edge of the group is created with the cool yellow ochre and cool alizarin crimson.

In design on this piece, the horizontal of the strip of lighted foreground will be related to the clump of aspens in sunlight, and their trunks will create the verticals necessary to connect the two areas.

On other news, I have jury duty this week, and am also turning in eight paintings for the “Off the Wall” fundraiser at the Riverside Art Museum tomorrow. They are small still life works from my daily painting days, and a couple of landscapes. These will sell for $100, $200 and $300 with proceeds going to support the museum. If I get called in for the duty, I’ll take my laptop and update the web site. No wasted moments!

Quarter Horse Congress

We have great weather here in Columbus, the sun is out in full force and I am having a wonderful time wandering the grounds. I stopped by Congress Hall and visited with the guys, Paul and Phil. They are great guys and it is so fun to watch Phil work the crowd answering any questions people may have while Paul is busy at the laptop. Make sure to visit Phil’s blog to see more on their trip experiences here at the Congress

CAG “Helping Paws” Online Show ~ Vote for the Cause!

I’m happy to to be taking part in another Canine Art Guild online show. This one is titled, “Helping Paws” and it’s a very special exhibit. Each participating artist was asked to choose a rescue or shelter with which to partner, and donate a portion of sales to their chosen group. My choice was a no-brainer for me - it’s no secret Border Collies are close to my heart, and I have worked with Border Collie Rescue Ontario on different occasions. My own little rescue, Swish, is a product of that relationship. I have three pieces in the show: Fascination, Bordering On Insanity, and Wondering. What I am offering is fine art giclée reproductions, and I’m donating 50% to BCRO. Here’s a chance to purchase a reproduction and support a great cause. Visit BCRO’s blog to read about some of the dogs in the program.

I hope you’ll take the time to stop by the show, and vote for your favourite painting. There’s an added incentive - the prize money normally awarded to the artist for the People’s Choice Award will go to the rescue he or she has designated as his or her partner. With some pretty serious political elections on the horizon in both Canada and the U.S. right now, here is a fun opportunity to vote, for a very worthwhile cause!

Romsey show and some!

The Romsey show was great! Once you got past the mud that is! I was towed in by tractor, but once in and set up it was a very successful show. The sun shone and the public came in their droves. ( which also flattend the mud ridges back down)!

I had a lovely day and met lots of lovely people, took some commissions too. Probably my last for Christmas unless I get more productive. I have a commissions list 8 long to fit in before christmas so work is good. I will also be creating gift vouchers for those who dont want the pressure of a surprise portrait!

Also this week I have been asked to donate some prints to the Wessex autistic socitey which of course I did. The event was to show case the students work and raise funds for the charity.

I will doing a demonstration of portrait work and works with a palette knife at Fair Oaks art group near Southampton on 7th January.

Also after much nagging I am beginning my art classes at the end of October.
These will be fortnightly at my workshop and include assistance in drawing and painting in watercolour and acrylic.

The new Canine Art Guild exhibition “Helping Paws 2008″ goes online

The fifth Canine Art Guild online exhibition is now live…!

Helping Paws 2008 is now online!

A wide and varied display of dog art can be viewed (and the best: all is for sale! Definately worth a visit!). Each and every artist entered has pledge to donate proceeds of their sales to a  shelter or charity of their choice. Well worth a visit.

Here is one of my three entries “Close to Home

“Close to home”

Mixed media (graphite/charcoal) on paper, 20×20 cm

200 Euros (20% donated to DCGR)

This is the best place for any dog: out in the open, on a long lead, beside its loved ones (not only one pair of legs but two!) discovering new sights and sounds.
This black lab is well surrounded and at peace with its life.

Through my art I would like to heighten the awareness of how these gorgeous, quiet and loyal canines are in dire need of a warm safe bed of a good home.

The Dumfriesshire & Cumbria is a Scottish charity focused on re-homing retired or abandoned Greyhounds. As a charity they not only use what they raise for kennel fees, vet fees, fostering expenses and advertising but also try to raise public awareness of the plight of dogs at the end of their racing/coursing careers. To date 500 ex racers and coursers have found new homes.

Have a great Sunday!

September 28, 2008 Exhibit

Sunday, September 28, 2008 was the date for the second in a series of combined media events involving music and artwork.

The Delano Chamber Players and Wichita Horn Society were once again in concert in Wichita.

And once again, art played an important part in the concert.

For this concert, I selected a collection of horse paintings in oils and colored pencils for the exhibit and they were very well received. Most of those attending the concert browsed the exhibit, which was set up in the narthex and was strategically placed between the sanctuary, where the concert was held, and the area where the refreshments were. Several stopped to talk with me about my work and about how I got started painting horses and doing art. Most are surprised that I do not currently and have never chosen to own a horse, a decision made deliberately to better direct the usage of my time toward creating as opposed to recreating.

There were between 60 and 70 in the audience, including many who had been in attendance for the first concert/exhibit in July.

For a good portion of the concert, I was able to work on a current colored pencil piece.

Aeropostale is the largest colored piece I currently have in the works and is also the largest colored pencil piece in quite some time.

It’s actually an older portrait, one started in the late 1990s or early 2000 and which I discovered quite by accident packed away in the other things that made the trip from Michigan to Kansas in 2002. It has been ‘in progress’ ever since, though it spends more time waiting than being worked on.

Although I frequently work to music, there is something delightful about working to live music. It’s why I usually take something to work on when going to Neal’s community band rehearsals, and part of the reason I decided to take a work in progress to this concert/exhibit.

Not even the best CDs can reproduce the full range of deep bass and tremulous high notes of string bass and violin, French horn and flute.

And that harpsichord! Oh! The Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 by J. S. Bach was absolutely inspiring!

The other reason is that people have always responded very enthusiastically to being able to see part of the creative process. Whether artists themselves or art lovers, seeing an artist actually creating always inspires interest in the finished work.

The next performance will be on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Westside Baptist at 3 p.m. I may very well be spending a good amount of time preparing new works for this upcoming exhibit, although there were requests for the miniatures. The new ACEO horse portraits currently in progress should fit in very nicely with that!

Delano Chamber Players, The Horn Society & Art

The afternoon of September 28, I will be exhibiting work at West Side Baptist Church in Wichita. The art exhibit will be co-featured with a live performance by a local orchestra. The concert is at 3 p.m. and will be followed by a reception.

This is the second in an ongoing series of exhibits combining the talents of many professional musicians from this part of the state and the talents of local artists.

The art exhibit will be available for viewing before and after the concert (and during the concert as well for those who prefer to shop and listen at the same time).

The focus of my portion of this exhibit will be my larger horse paintings in oils and colored pencil, such as Grandfather’s First Love (colored pencil), above.

West Side Baptist Church is located at 304 West Seneca in the Delano District of Wichita.

The concert and exhibit are free of charge and the public is welcome.

The next concert for the Horn Society will be Sunday, November 2, and the next group concert will be Sunday, December 21, 2008. Both concerts will be at West Side Baptist.

The Art of the Horse, New Jersey

Today is the Opening Reception for the Exhibit “Art of the Horse” at The Johnson Gallery at the Somerset Art Association in Bedminster, New Jersey. Reception is from 2~4 PM. The Exhibit is open until October 25, 2008. You can call the Gallery at (908)-234-2345 for the Gallery hours.

I find my artwork in some highly acclaimed company! Work by invited Full Members of the American Academy of Equine Art are also in this Exhibit as well as a few of us who have been juried into the exhibit and who are members of the Equine Art Guild.

I have posted a photo of my Watercolor Painting “Cowboy’s delight” that is in this Exhibit.
I do wish that I could have gone to this reception and Exhibit. But I do have a few friends who have been juried in and are also going to be there. One is the great racing scene painter Linda Shantz from Canada and the other is a great Equine Artist Jenifer Trottier from New Jersey. They will clue me in as to what went on and how it was, I hope.

And for those of you close enough, I hope that you are able to drop by the Gallery and view some really wonderful Equine Art.
