Civil War Day

Today was a day not fit for man or beast but we survived the 100+ degree temps at the Landis Valley’s Civil War Day. They horses were kept in the shade until they were needed and didn’t seem to be suffering. I felt so bad for the soldiers dressed in wool. Here are a few photos I was able to take. It’s a bit hard when you’re walking around with a 4 year old who’s hot and thirsty and completely uninterested in everything that’s going on around her.

Landis Valley Farm Museum

On Sunday my father treated us to a member ship at the Landis Valley Farm Museum. This weekend they were having their Harvest Days which is my favorite time of year to go. It’s nice to know that I can got to all the events there for a year free now! In the spring they have a great herb and heirloom plant/seed faire they also have a wonderful event for children at Christmas and on Sundays in the summer I believe they have ice cream socials. Plus Zoe (and I) can learn all sorts of cool things like how they used to make lace or candles or how they baked bread in an outdoor over. How to use oxen to plow fields, dying, spinning and weaving wool, what an old fashioned general store looked like. I find the whole place fascinating!

Back Into The Bigger Biggers

This afternoon I finally was able to get back into the studio and set up my easel to get back into painting this 30 x 40″ casein of the “Beautiful Blonde Belgians”. Even though it seems to be taking a long time to finish this one…it is one of those paintings that seems to be painting itself. I am using my usual palette… but it seems to be coming together differently. We shall see when it is done! Once I got over the initial fear of the BIG CANVAS ….I am loving the looseness I feel doing this.

Nellie has been helping me by keeping me company from the comfort of our bed. From there she can see into my studio… and also into the mirror to keep tabs on that canine friend of hers who lives in the “Bizarro” world inside the mirror. That silly dog barks at her and growls a lot…but has yet to come into the bedroom to actually challenge her…big brave dog that she is!!

I love this shot of her…I think I will have to paint this one!

Before The Paint

I am sitting here posting this…still in my pj’s! That is one of the perks of having my studio at home!!! But I got into this drawing this morning and forgot about everything else! So the dogs sit and wait to be walked for their mid-morning walk and here I am posting about this sketch that will be put up on a 30 x 40″ canvas this afternoon. …after I walk the poor pups! After I get dressed!
Actually they have been busy watching from their deck perch as Les trims around all the gardens. I am sure our Corgi , Addie thinks he could do a better job!

This sketch on bristol paper is really too big to scan at 11 x 14″, so I will have to photo it to really show all of it and my signature on the right bottom. As I explained before, I very often work out a sketch before putting paint on canvas or board. This sketch works for me…so I feel the ‘need’ to get into it.
I am excited about the possibilities! Strike while the iron is hot!!! No???

Hurry up and wait, Draft Horses

I’ve been playing in the Oil paint, as well as the Graphite and Watercolors. The Studio has been a very busy place lately. With two easels constantly dawning a canvas, A large drawing table with several Watercolors and the Graphites on it, another, smaller, drawing table holding a light box to help with those images that are too dark and a framing table full of the Graphites that need to be sprayed with a fixative and packaged and then there is the packages with sold art in them, being carefully wrapped and ready to send on their merry way to their new home. It’s amazing I get anything done at all in there! It really is kinda messy in there. It seems there is a ‘pile’ on every flat surface. But once, I had a moment of cleaning and picking up….I spent a good part of a half an hour or more….searching for what I needed! I didn’t like that much…so, I leave the piles, because I know what’s in them! I think….

This Oil painting is “Hurry up and wait”. An 11 x 14 Canvas. I rendered this painting from a Draft Horse Show I attended this past August. I loved the dark reds in these horses as they waited in the late afternoon light. I added the reflection and the bucket and the hose. If you have noticed….a lot of my paintings have been showing reflections and wet surfaces. I’m not sure what is up with all of this wet reflective surfaces, Other than it lends to a fun composition! One of these days, I’ll probably find out in my quiet time….why I am drawn to the wet, slick surfaces. But for now, I’m having fun with the subject matter!

Have a great weekend!
