“Interwoven” oil on copper 10 x 10″
This oil painting is done, and signed and ready to frame. My vegetables in my garden are climbing up our arbor and clinging to the grape vines …..probably not a good thing….but it does make for some interesting images……How could I not paint this part of our life here at Cob Cottage.
The weather has been very warm for us the last few days…a stretch of sunny humid and depressive heat. The animals and I are looking forward to fall weather with colors and brisk sunny days! Bring it on!

Casein on canvas-Work In Progress- As it stands now
The days flew by this past week and I didn’t get much done on this casein canvas of the three drafts. A Pair & A Spare But I did want to show those who are interested in my method, at what point the painting is now .I have done a bit more definition, with lighter lights etc, BUT the work has a long way to go still.
I also started two oils on copper panels, a 10 x 10 equine piece and a 10 x 10 garden scene. Working on those two works got me dreaming…dreaming about heading out west to paint cow-ponies and cowboys …stark western landscapes and bright colors….all while sitting here in green green Maine. Travelling in my head! But it is a dream that I will pursue at some point . You have to have dreams!

My winter squash hanging out in our garden!
The grass keeps growing around our cottage lawns…needs mowing and the veggies are growing rampant on the farm! I have winter squash and cukes climbing our garden arbor, vining around my grapes and morning-glories. What a splendid display of the effects of spreading composted horse manure around the gardens! So I decided to paint my garden’s bounty! Last spring these veggies were just a dream. So I hauled old manure and tilled the soil and watered the seeds…and now Voila! Beauty and bounty!
I can just hope that my artwork can yield the same …..and I can get out west and paint those cowboys!!
I have a dream……………

A 30 x 40″ canvas
How do I apply my paint?
Well, if it is casein then this is sort of how I approach a painting. Sometimes I do start with a colored groun , but I am just as likely to start out with a plain old gessoed canvas…….. as white as driven snow! I took this photo that I am working with, a few years ago, of horses up at Acadia at Wildwood Stables. A pair and a spare. You can see the photo sitting on the easel, the canvas image is sketched out in charcoal and I have gone in with Payne’s Gray and later with Purple to establish my darkest of darks. Bare with me now. I am not a teacher…so my explanations might not be the best!
|
 |
My palette, sort of empty at this point, but this is how I set up.
Then I go with the old middle tone color that I will build on as I go on painting.I often start out my work with Paynes Gray,Terra Verte and Golden Ochre, and Purple………I do…Don’t ask me why….I just do?!! I like to establish my shadows and light’s direction from the get go.That helps pull the painting together later. Casein has the most wonderful colors I feel….all earthy and with a lovely matte finish.
|
 |
| A cropped version of the painting.Design, Design, Design!! I feel the MOST IMPORTANT part of a painting is DESIGN! If the design is bad,…’the composition’,… then the entire painting won’t work. I cropped the painting in progress here and I think this crop would work as a painting on it’s own. In other words…I am happy with my design. So I proceed………… |
 |
| It is coming along here. |
 |
| The darkest shadows and the light color notes are in.
Now I leave it alone for 24 hours, to let the casein base colors dry..and I take time to walk the dogs, clean the stalls, feed the man and sleep. Then I will be back at it when I have time. Hopefully later today.

“Shades Of Gray – Ladies In White” Oil on Copper 22 x 22″
I have had little time lately to actually get into a groove and get some quality studio time. I have been grabbing minutes here and there. But my husband, Les, is healing and doing well.So we must admit we are feeling a bit more than blessed these days. Les has a lovely place to rest and recuperate from his driving accident….I am just happy to have him home.Addie, our Corgi is busy being ‘Nurse Jane Fuzzy-Wuzzy’ and watching his every move. Nellie, our resident Jack Russell ‘Terrierist’ is making sure Les is being washed and loved. How could the man not heal?!!!
Until then……less painting….and more Les!

With three windows looking out onto my back garden, my new studio now affords me new views to distract me. I even placed my drawing board in front of one window to take advantage of the natural light and in the summer the fresh air! The door opens onto the back patio and a space where I can paint or draw out of the sun during warmer weather.A hop skip and jump outside the studio, birds sing, the brook bubbles and life on the farm goes on!

The back wall will contain my work tables, room for my easel and also a wall space where I can actually hang a canvas that is too big for the easel!! Now I can really rock and roll and not hit my head! The black cupboard that houses my papers and supplies is now easy to get to ….without having to move furniture around to open the cupboard doors! I have paintings piled in the right corner of the room now, but that corner will soon be home to the flat-file still needs painting and above that my small drawers that house all my paints oil, casein, acrylic, tempera. My charcoal and watercolors are housed in my taboret….and my pastels will soon be all spread out in a type-set drawer that I have….easy to grab and see the colors. The type-set drawer used to hang on the wall with nick nac’s displayed in it….something to dust! Not anymore!
The wall that I am not showing here now, has the spiral staircase against it in one corner and will also be fitted with shelves where I can store finished unframed work and canvas to be used. Let me tell you….this has all been a dream for a long time………. So see?!!! Dreams do come true!!!

“Aiming For The Target” watercolor on paper 13 x 18″
I am a bit slow this year on planning my goals, having waffled a bit about ‘where I want to go ” with my life and my artwork. But I think I am on target now with shows lined up and deadlines to meet, illustrations to be done and commissions accepted. And I still have time for fun original work! I am on target!
Which brings me to the latest work I am finishing up. Pictured above. “Aiming For The Target” is almost done..a work in progress at this point. It is a watercolor on paper on board and is sized at 13 x 18″. When it is finished I will be putting it up onto my website . I have enjoyed doing two works depicting the high energy sport of mounted shooting! I am looking forward to getting some more reference shots this summer when they are having events in Maine that I can go to.
My internet is acting up yet again this morning….very disconcerting. So I can cutting this post short and going on to endeavors that are easier on the brain! Walking the dogs!

“Carry A Big Whip” casein 20 x 16″ copyright 2009 Kathi Peters
Each day I try to do some artwork. I am usually able to work without any distractions [other than normal daily distractions of dogs, horses, and husband! ] But of late, the days have had a myriad of minor and major distractions. I know it must be a sign of the holidays that are upon us….baking, shopping, partying ….making lists! It all takes its toll. Any day spent away from the studio feels like time lost for me…as if I lost that one time when I was going to really do my best work yet! ….That one painting that would have that WOW factor!! A day wasted! I wonder how many other artists have that same burn….that same push each day to create and to maybe actually do that best work ever? It is always about the next painting!
My latest painting is pictured above, a hunt scene…and what captured my interest was the whip and the movement of the horse…..”Carry A Big Whip ” is a 20 x 16″ casein on board. It will be available on my website if you want to see a larger image.
Tomorrow is another day where obligations will take me away from the studio. What if tomorrow was going to be the day that I would be painting my masterpeice….and I wasn’t there working on it! How will I ever know?!!!

The rain came down for hours, pounding on our cottage’s metal roof, running in rivulets down the driveway back to the barn and it filled our bubbly brook to over flowing. This brook is usually a rambling brook that gently trips it way through the woods that stand on the one side of our property. There is a scraggly evergreen tree that stands in the middle of this brook …and I love it. It has grown a bit since we moved here, and I enjoy seeing it as it stands sentinel in the midst of the mountain run-off brook. I imagine decorating it with lights and tinsel every Christmas, but I don’t do it. Instead I let mother nature decorate it with new fallen snow each winter, and to skirt it with a blanket of ice. So far this winter there has not been any snow here in our part of Maine, but I am sure we won’t have to wait much longer for the white to come. Until it does come, I will enjoy listening to the brook as it sings… as it winds past Cob Cottage.
I have been busy working on several works in casein, and one of these paintings is of a hunt scene. I started with one image and have added and subtracted from it in the process. The image below is how it looked at one point. Keep this in mind, as I will be posting the finished work very shortly….and it looks differently . That is my prerogative …artist license one could say. I am just trying to sing my song…and sometimes I get out of tune! I hope it is ‘on pitch’ when it is done!

Looking out from my studio, the farm is starting to look a bit gray around the edges. The gold and orange of Fall makes way for the more solemn gray of the coming winter. But the one bright spot behind the barn, beside the pond, stands out with the still yellow of the Tamarack trees. I love them in the fall with their burst of yellow and again in spring when they put out their delicate soft Chromium Light Green needles that just whisper of the coming of warmth and growth on the farm.
The other bright spot being my awesome yellow barn doors. What a great statement they make!
Canvas is not the only thing I paint!!
Don’t forget the 140 Hours of Fame Art show and Auction that is taking place on Twitter….check it out. A great way to get some great art to brighten up your walls for this winter! It starts tomorrow, Nov.5th! Bid early and bid often!

The canvas with the ‘Beautiful Blonde Belgians’ is in the ‘uglies’ stage. All paintings seem to go though that phase… where I sort of loose direction and have to pull the work back together again. The fact that my studio is so small is also a problem when I work on these larger canvases.
But I am excited about this one…and I do know where I want to go with it…I am just not there yet!
The artshow reception at Anderson Galleries in Locust Valley, NY took place on Thursday [9/10/09] evening and I have already had positive input about the show and my work. Hope you can get into the gallery to see my work and the lovely work of the other artists exhibited there.
Color is slow, so far, to hit the trees surrounding our farm. But I can heard the sounds of fall and the sad passing of summer in the birds and insects around Cob Cottage. The yellow finch are singing like they never sang all summer. I wonder if they will stick around this winter cheering up the gray landscape with their sunny yellow? I hope so!
Back to my painting….mixing my colors for the day.

Not only does this cute pug have his own yacht…he also has people to sail it for him! This 12 x 12 ” casein was commissioned by a collector of my work from New York, and it is to be given to Charlie’s people. Yes , Charlie….THE PUG……has ‘PEOPLE’! I should have people!
What I have is animals….
My Cob Cottage crew are napping on the deck…..soaking up sun before thunderstorms storm through. Summer has finally arrived in Morrill, Maine!

There has been a serious lack of sunshine lately. My flowers are wilting…veggies are not growing…and I think we all, at Cob Cottage, are starting to grow mold! Nellie tried to soak up some sun the other day when we did have some rays bathing the farm. But the sun was short lived and now the farm is cloaked in fog and drizzle blankets the fields and woods.
I am still working on the BIG painting, but I am starting some small ones too, because my muse needed a change from big. Every evening I have to dismantle my easel and prop the big painting against the cupboard in my studio, so that we can get through the studio to get to the bedroom. I am thinking my studio was not meant to be housing BIG paintings.
And the first sunny day ….I am headed out to work in the gardens and soak up some rays. Nellie knows when to grab her chances…I was too busy painting on the Big painting!
Live and learn!!!
