“They Stand, They Wait-Acadia” casein on paper 9 x 12″
Please join me at Åarhus Gallery for an opening reception Friday March 5th, 5-8pm for the second annual ‘44N 69W: Radius Belfast’. An all encompassing show running from March 4th through the 28th, featuring work by Maine artists. All artworks, celebrating this vast creative community, will be on view and for sale with 20% of proceeds going to food banks within a thirty-mile radius of Belfast. Last year over one hundred and fifty pieces of art were exhibited to the delight of hundreds of visitors, with consequent sales enabling a generous donation to the Good Shepard Food Bank. This year I am exhibiting a painting depicting carriage horses up at Acadia National Park, Maine’s crown jewel! We have spent many wonderful hours driving the carriage roads of Acadia ourselves. I will never tire of painting horses at Acadia! I am honored to be part of this great endeavor!

Our resident hunter was off for a few days of recreation with our sons, hunting the great white-tail. I had my days to myself, to pursue my own entertainment. Of course my day had to be scheduled around the walking of the dogs and caring for the horses…but other than that I was free!!
I have been working on a few paintings for shows that are coming up, but I felt like playing in my paints for a bit…doing something different… and decided to entertain the idea of doing a self-portrait. I hadn’t done one in a while and I have always felt that one way to grow and explore as an artist, is to explore and paint one’s self.
So I struck this pose in front of our bedroom mirror and Voila’ ….a self-portrait arose! It is small, as I don’t want to be taken for a self absorbed dilettante,…it is a 6 x 6″ casein. Of course to be able to see what I was painting I had to have my posh glasses on! I feel they added to the ‘feel’ of the painting.
So here it is…’an artist as seen by an artist!’ For what it is worth?!!

The last few days we have been busy battening down the hatches here on Cob Cottage farm in anticipation of winter and cold days ahead. It will come faster than we think…and I have more than a few gardens and window boxes to to cleaned and put to bed. It all cannot be done in one day. I am thinking this gardening frenzy that hits me each spring needs to be rethought and curbed a bit.
Control is not a operative word when it comes to me and gardening.!!
I am really almost done with the casein [30 x 40"] of the Blonde Belgians….this is how it stands today. The sketch of this painting has been sold and I need to ship that out this week. I am done with the drawing at this point and the painting can be finished without me referring to the drawing. I have many clients interested in purchasing my work sketches…a rather non expensive way of collecting my work.
The fall colors surround the farm. The below shot is from our deck…. of our fields…our barn. Soon the color will be gone and gray will prevail until the white and blue of snow covered winter landscape surrounds us. The scene new fails to remind us our blessed we are to be living in this spot in the middle of this natural splendor.
That reminds me…. I have 50 Narcissus bulbs waited to be planted before snow…..so much for control of gardens!

The old saying” No Foot No Horse” came to mind when I first saw this scene. I was attracted to the image of the horse and his caretaker….but it really was the landscape, the Mediterranean light and the shortened view that captured my muse…. and so I painted it, a 12 x 16″ casein on board.
The finished painting is available on my website now. Jordi, a friend from Spain and his handsome Freisian are the subjects in this shot….I thank Jordi and Captain!
The title of this work is “Spanish Freisian”…..maybe I should change it to “No Foot No Horse”?

This afternoon I finally was able to get back into the studio and set up my easel to get back into painting this 30 x 40″ casein of the “Beautiful Blonde Belgians”. Even though it seems to be taking a long time to finish this one…it is one of those paintings that seems to be painting itself. I am using my usual palette… but it seems to be coming together differently. We shall see when it is done! Once I got over the initial fear of the BIG CANVAS ….I am loving the looseness I feel doing this.
Nellie has been helping me by keeping me company from the comfort of our bed. From there she can see into my studio… and also into the mirror to keep tabs on that canine friend of hers who lives in the “Bizarro” world inside the mirror. That silly dog barks at her and growls a lot…but has yet to come into the bedroom to actually challenge her…big brave dog that she is!!
I love this shot of her…I think I will have to paint this one!

I think I have been saying that a lot lately. “Almost done”… but I look at a painting and when I am not completely happy with it, I can’t let go. I am at that point with this painting….I will let you know!
This is one of the paintings that I will be sending down to the Skyline Farm’s Fall Exhibition which has it’s opening reception on September 25th at 5-7 pm…on the farm…. in the Carriage Museum. The invitational exhibit is titled “Maine Harvest, Land and Sea”, and this year showcases fine art and crafts too. My work in the show will cover the gamut.. from bovine to equine…and a bit of ocean too! I am looking forward to seeing the work of the invited artists and craftsmen. It should be a neat show for folks to come to, to find that very special Christmas present for their very special someone!
And speaking about someone…..Nellie , our resident Terrier-ist has taken to following me up into the studio…and then making a nest for herself on our bed amoung the pillows. She thinks if she hides her face…I can’t see her! Silly girl!! So she sleeps amoung the pillows, like a princess, while I work!
I CAN SEE YOU, NELLIE!!!

The canvas with the ‘Beautiful Blonde Belgians’ is in the ‘uglies’ stage. All paintings seem to go though that phase… where I sort of loose direction and have to pull the work back together again. The fact that my studio is so small is also a problem when I work on these larger canvases.
But I am excited about this one…and I do know where I want to go with it…I am just not there yet!
The artshow reception at Anderson Galleries in Locust Valley, NY took place on Thursday [9/10/09] evening and I have already had positive input about the show and my work. Hope you can get into the gallery to see my work and the lovely work of the other artists exhibited there.
Color is slow, so far, to hit the trees surrounding our farm. But I can heard the sounds of fall and the sad passing of summer in the birds and insects around Cob Cottage. The yellow finch are singing like they never sang all summer. I wonder if they will stick around this winter cheering up the gray landscape with their sunny yellow? I hope so!
Back to my painting….mixing my colors for the day.

The weather lately has be the most awesome…bright sun filled days followed by cool starlit nights. I love it! The garden is winding down for the fall and the deer are nibbling their way through our backyard each evening. The beautiful zinnias and morning-glories in my veggie garden are like hors d’oeuvres for them. So I picked one bright zinnia to grace my windowsill in my studio. The sunlight pouring through the old jelly glass [One that we use as a juice glass for morning orange juice] prompted this small ‘gem”….. 7 X 5″ Casein on board. I have placed it in my Small Works Collection on my website too.
I am still working on the larger canvas of the Belgian draft horses.
The summer days have just seemed to fly by here at Cob Cottage.

This small casein will be hung in the Skyline Farm Art Show with the opening reception September 25th. Titled” “Dock On The Bay”……it is sized at 5 x 7″ !
It is a beautiful day on the farm…and I will be most of the day in the studio.I am all stoked on a new work started today! But also need to finish works still in the process. It ever ends….and as Martha would say “That’s a good thing!!!”

Several months ago I learned that I had received a grant from the Maine Arts Commissions, along with some other members of The Freeport Creative Arts Organization. We were charged with portraying life in Freeport, Maine.
My family and I used to live in Freeport YEARS ago…. then moved to Pownal , Maine where we lived for over 25 years..raised our sons and started into farming and raising horses there. For several years of those years so long ago.. I belonged to a Freeport art club. I was into tapestry weaving and block printing at that point in my creative endeavors. I wasn’t doing a lot of equine art…I just liked to depict animals of any “denomination”!
It has been years now that I have been painting the horse…painting what I love and know so well. As my husband and I got more involved in carriage driving, I also was drawn to depicting the driven horse and carriage turnouts. Today I do do some figurative work…some canine work and an occasional landscape. But it is so true that most artists paint what they love, what fires their artistic flame….and for me that is the horse. SO it was with some hesitation that I took part in the FAC project. My best friend and a fellow FAC member, Karen, pushed me along. I am so glad she got me out of my comfort zone…….
I ended up doing a 4 x 4′ casein portraying the Freeport Firemen of the 1930’s. It is displayed above….. and in an attempt to honour the Freeport firemen, titled it “Freeport Heroes”. Our eldest son is a fireman, one of the first responders in Portland, Maine. He helped me get my information to create the painting…..and I will tell more about that another time.
I just am so honored and exciting about taking part in this MAC adventure!
The reception for “Experiencing Freeport – Showing Our Town Through Art” will be held at The Freeport Village Station in Freeport, Maine on Friday, September 4th from 5-6:30 pm with entertainment and refreshments. I would love to see you there!!!

This is where I am now, with the 40 x 30″ casein of a 3-phase rider who captured my attention last May, when I was down at the Kentucky Horse Park. She was exercising her horse in an arena where many others were also doing the same thing….but for some reason this pair stood out for me. I had to paint them. It is not true that I am fascinated with black horses…the old black stallion syndrome!! But this black showed me purples and reds and blues in his coat. He could be a “Shades of Black” candidate? But this painting is more about his movement, and the landscape and jumps around him. [ See the June 12,2009 blog post titled "Knowing Where I am Going" ]
I have included a gray-scale shot of this work..I often will check my values with a gray-scale image check.I am thinking everything is sort of coming into place okay.I was supposed to be in Saratoga, NY today ,doing a casein painting demonstration at Equidae Gallery in the morning and then going to the champagne reception in the Gallery tonight. So here is a meager attempt to show you what I do when I paint in casein….and this evening I will raise a glass of wine to the gallery and all the fellow artists with works hanging in the show.Wish I could be there with you all!!
So while the winds whip outside the studio, as the storms blow through this part of Maine, I think I will get back to the task at hand.

I am still going through photos from our Kentucky trip last May. Most shots are of horses, horse farms, Keeneland and Churchill Downs Race Tracks….and yes, several Jack Russells that we met. But I do have some shots of a certain real estate in Cincinnati that I fell in love with. It stood looking down on the Ohio River with tree lined streets and was surrounded by other lovely homes. How I wanted to look inside…I could imagine myself living there.
I came home with several photos of this old Italianate style home….and today I finished this 12 x 9″ casein painting of the house. I painted this as an evening scene, as I imagined it might look in the glow of the evening sky. I can still see myself living there!
But I don’t know where the horses would fit??;-)

Along with being in several other professional art groups, I am an elected associate member of “The Women Artists Of The West”! WAOW announced its inaugural on line show and sale that opened August 1 and will be available through September 30, 2009 . I have two works in this show, and am proud to be a member of this prestigious group of professional artists.
Please take a browse through the online gallery of WAOW members in “Women Revealed: WAOW Showcases Their World”. It is a lovely show.
This is one of my two works “hung” in this show.
“Non- Voluntary Dismount” – 12x 9″ – casein on paper,
double matted and glassed with black frame.

This handsome fellow was all Jack when we visited Cobra Farm in Lexington,KY. last May, during my solo show at Gallery B. Though I was taken with all the beautiful thoroughbred horses at the farm, it seems the dogs I met there have come alive on my canvases first.
This is a small 8 x 6″ casein on canvas on board.
Another rainy day finds me back in the studio for the afternoon. My pups are sleeping. The house is quiet. It’s a good time to paint.

Another gray day. Seems that is what I am bemoaning a lot these days.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record.
Above is a fun little casein on board, 5 x 7”, of a young JRT having fun. Jacks are always ready for fun! I am titling it “Leapin’ Lizards”. It will be put up on my website too. The pup who inspired this painting is a new friend I have made on Facebook. Thanks, Vicki!!
Now I have to make some time for some commissions that need to get finished and in between those I will be working on new work. While my family series got put on a back burner, that whole subject matter is begging to be done…and so I have to follow my muse.
The other night I spent a fair amount of time looking for rentals in Italy. It is a dream of mine [and Les’ too] to go back to Italy and spend some time there. [Our horses and dogs and cat don’t think it is such a good idea…!] I looked over the area where Les and I used to live in Umbria and Tuscany. It has grown up so much since we were there…. villages are now cities. Cobbled stoned streets are now highways. Maybe we should stay where we are and just remember it like it was? Oh, but wouldn’t it be great to be painting in Italy again???

I have been working like a dog lately…. and if that saying was really true, then I would be napping all day long and only getting up to eat or go for walks! At least that is how my two pups live! They have me well trained!
But the truth is that I have been working every day …all day…painting on a project that is a stretch for me. But stretching is good. It helps us develop muscles! And this work also makes me stretch to paint, as the canvas is a BIG 4 foot by 4 foot. I will post the image at a later date and tell you more about it. Let it suffice for the time being, I am working like a dog!

My artwork for the Equidae Gallery show [held in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., during summer race season] has arrived at the Gallery. I booked a B&B room for our stay August 6th through the 8th… and am looking forward to some site seeing in Saratoga. This is my first time seeing Saratoga and I have been told it is beautiful. That and horses galore…Heaven!

The casein pictured above is one of the paintings that are going to be hanging at The Equidae Gallery exhibit. It is a 9 x 12”, glassed and double matted. It is one of my favorite ones…It is titled
“I Can Do It Myself”.
AND…. Doing this big casein canvas painting I am doing now, is in a way proving to myself that I can do it!
