A Horse and Their Person AKA Zephyr & Brad

Smile….you are on candid camera! I am not sure what Zephyr is up to here but I could tell you a little lie and say that on the command of “cheese” he gave me his best horsey smile! :)

This is a piece I created for a portrait submission and it is quite a departure from my usual work. I culled through quite a few of my photos for this little gem and with a bit of cropping, this was what I came up with. I have to admit I was quite pleased!

The piece will be judged by world class photographer (and famous) Mary Ellen Mark. She taught a class to the photojournalists at school while I was busy doing the fine art thing in a class room next door. That is not at all to say that PJs are not artists but their photography has more of a traditional look and a documentary flair. PJs are always on the hunt for that great shot and a story that nobody has ever taken before.

Sort of similar to my approach with the horses….. striving to create equine fine art photography that sets me apart from other horse photography colleagues. It is not about being in competition with them but working from my heart and instincts to create work that is unique because it comes from me.

Other things going on in my horsey world (is there any other world??? – well not for me) is that a fellow author from the Horse as Teacher book has asked to use six of my creations to make a promotional video. You may have heard of her – Stormy May. She is the producer of the Path of the Horse DVD. If you love horses and are interested in their welfare then this is a must see. She sold her ranch to travel the world and film several equine visionaries. It is not only beautiful but incredibly moving.

Time to sign off. Tomorrow is a busy day with a photo shoot and a visit to an equine rescue facility. Oops and I forgot…..dropping off a mounted print to a customer in the same neck of the woods.

Bye for Now!

Wonderful day of Kite Flying at Storm King Sculpture Museum

My husband, son and I had the wonderful opportunity to go to Storm King Sculpture Museum in Mountainville, NY yesterday. There was a kite launch that anyone could join in one of the fields. The weather was fantastic. Enough wind for the kites and that kind of sky that the Hudson River school of painters loved. the shot of the hosta is from my front garden before we left for the day.
Storm King is a huge property with giant metal sculptures and wonderful site specific pieces, as well as small outdoor work and a little museum building. The most recent addition to the grounds is a piece call the Wave Field by Maya Lin. These mounds of earth and vegetation are 12 feet tall in places. You can see them from a height or wander among and over them. Within the museum they had a small exhibition of her work as well.

The wall you can see in the picture is Storm King Wall by Andy Goldsworthy. it serpentines and meanders up through the woods quite a ways. The museum is about 1 hour North of NYCity and well worth the trip from anywhere. The property is huge and one entry fee allows you to do whatever you wish. You can picnic and wander the fields and woods for hours and never feel crowded.

More on Relationships

Well we all know good relationships depend on communication and it appears that these two are indeed communicating. While we know horses don’t speak in human language they sure have a language of their own!

These two seem very at peace with each other and there certainly is a yin and yang effect with the black and the white.

I sent off five images tonight with the hopes that one of them will work for the project. Keep your fingers crossed!

Spring News!

Hello to all my Fans, Friends and Family,

Spring is finally feeling like it is here! I thought it might be time to spread some news.

Beginning April 15th you will find my work hanging on the walls of the FlatIron Steakhouse in Red Hook, NY. Along with some beautiful shots by the owner, Jessica Stingo, will be 6 of my pieces. So stop by for a fantastic meal…and take a look. I can honestly tell you that when we eat there, we eat everything on our plates. It is all delicious. There are vegetarian dishes and I can easily make a meal of their appetizers, salads and sides. Not to mention the desserts! www.flatironsteakhouse.com

After that….opening on May 2nd will be the Over Hill and Dale art show of equine and landscape work at the Maplebrook School in Amenia, NY. This show has work of the highest quality and partial proceeds from sales will go to support the therapeutic riding program sponsored by the school for it’s students. I will have 3 pieces hung in the show and 6 more matted available. So come on over on Derby Day and enjoy the camaraderie and artwork. More details on the reception time to come.

And don’t forget to purchase copies of White Horses – From the Literal to the Sublime. I have been thrilled with the feedback I have been getting and have already had to order more copies of the hardcover. Click here to see the preview of the hardcover, http://www.blurb.com/books/592211 Purchase directly through me and your copy will be signed and sent along with a special packet of postcards from the images in the book.

Enjoy what Spring you are getting. My crocuses are in bloom!

Warmly,
Juliet

Second Image for B&W Contest

Today we had 18 inches of snow! I love the spring storms and we really need the snow this year to help lower the risk of fires. I didn’t get out to see the horses today but I was told they were running around like nut balls!

This is my second image for the juried B&W show I am going to enter. I like the pensive quality of this horse. The deadline is tomorrow so how about that for waiting until the last minute!

Bye for now,

Same Image – Two Workups

I am working on a couple of pieces for a juried B&W photography competition and the deadline is this Friday! After checking out the previous years winners it was apparent that they seem to like contrasty images. To achieve this you need to have a true black in your image and almost 100% white. This is tricky because you don’t want to have your highlights blown out and losing the details. That means they want to see all the little hairs in the white mane and also the subtle detail in the shadows.

The upper picture is close to finished. The lower picture was also worked up in B&W but sepia toned to get the brown color. I left the pink in his muzzle while accentuating the blue gray. I think I like this workup better but unfortunately the contest is traditional B&W!

Behind Closed Paws, graphite drawing of puppy.

“Behind Closed Paws”
27×20 cm, Graphite on Paper
380 Euros

In all honesty, I had a little help with this drawing… professional help: the concept and initial references are not my own.
The photographer behind “Behind Closed Paws” is none other than Erin Vey. (Here is how it came about.)
Erin Vey’s photograph of Vinnie not only turned my head and but triggered my imagination.
Erin’s photography is stunning.
If you are not familiar with her work, like dogs, enjoy great photography then there is only one thing for it : you have got to visit her website.

“Behind closed Paws” is one of three entries featuring in the sixth CAG online show The Company Dog’s Keep. There Vinnie the pup is in brilliant and versatile company and isthoroughly enjoying being cuter than cute.(Maybe he’ll get a few of the public’s votes)

Unfortunately, I can’t share much about the creation of this piece: I have no work in progress set up …real life and a tired scanner made sure of that… Technical data: Strathmore Smooth 2 ply, Derwent graphite pencils 5B, 2B & Staedler clutch with F. Touch of General’s charcoal for the very dark areas.
One thing I can share with confidence and openly is the affirmation that the grin never left my face…

Split Personality

This is a beautiful horse, but I took an ugly photo of her! Because she’s so sweet, and such a wonderful girl, I had to try to do something nice with this photo! A tribute to her…

I opened the photo in Photoshop, looked at it for a long, long time, thinking…. Because of the color of her eyes, and the abstract qualities of her blaze and mappings, her eyes don’t seem to belong to the same horse!

And because of the same weird look of the blaze, and some distortion of the lens, the bottom of her face needed to come off here. So crop it I did.

Looking at what I had a bit longer, I thought I’d make her black and white all the way. Because she still seemed to me, to look like two different horses in the same face, I decided to split the photo!

Wanting a division between the faces I have here, I decided to place her onto a background. As I placed the pieces of her face on the background, the name of this work came to me!

I give you:
Split Personality!

If you didn’t know what I’ve done here, you would never guess this is all one horse. Photoshop is so much fun. Don’t be afraid to play with it. You never know what will come to you as you sit staring at your computer screen!
