Doing the Dog Paddle

This has been, for lack of a better term, a very “interesting” summer. The spring was too wet and we survived flooding all over the state. The crops were late getting in and we had ankle high corn by the fourth of July instead of the intended knee high. Usually, these days with the hybrids, we have head high plus corn by July. Not this year.

I have been getting gobs done though, even if part of the gob is not keeping up with the blogging. Gob Blogging. Wonder if there is a market for that?

I have been taking photos almost everyday and I have a great backlog of things to use to illustrate the blog clear through to the autumn months and beyond.

For today’s subject, we took the puppies to the pond a few weeks ago, and Bella, the swim master, part otter dog, taught everyone the fine art of swimming. The “beaglador” Lab/Beagle mix was the only one who sat the first session out and refused to get her feet wet.

"Teach me, wise dog of the water."

“Teach me, oh Bella, wise dog of the water.”

“First you must focus outside of your fears. Find a goal. Like that stick. Become one with the water.”

Punks and Ponies

I have been so busy with summer things and cleaning and painting (Gasp! Yes! Cleaning! Which of course takes copious amounts of ice cream to soothe the trauma) and just find it difficult to find the time to gather photos and blog. One of those too much happening too fast problems to sit back and record or mull much of it.

The summer kids, Christina and Johnny, had a play day with their ponies the last week of June. That gave me the opportunity to shoot some photos, sit in the shade and watch. I let the kids do it all, so putting a rope halter on correctly and tying the proper knot was one of the first tasks they had to do.

They were very concentrated on getting it just right.

You have to love the patience of the ponies some times.

Wagon Train

My family has finally released me from the basement and the rope ties to keep me in place. During the month of June, a wagon train passed by here, far too close for it to be safe for me to be loose. It seemed to be precautionary to keep an eye on me until the train was further away and not a temptation.

I was able to spend most of the day Sunday, June 8th, during a rest day with the train, filming for RFD, interviewing, taking photos and making new friends. I returned the next day at the noon rest stop to get more footage and stills of the train on the road. I followed them for a while, then went on ahead so I could film the arrival into camp. Tuesday morning, I was able to arrive in camp while everyone was getting hitched and ready to depart for the day’s drive. The early morning light was incredible!

The wagon train was mastered by Danny Van Fleet and complete details can be found at http://vanfleetwagontrain.com/

The group started out in Nauvoo, Illinois and is following - as practically as possible - the Mormon Trail. This year they are crossing Iowa. Next year, Nebraska. The third year will take them into the west and ultimately to Salt Lake City, Utah.

The train will reach “winter quarters” in a few days’ time and end the journey for 2008 near Council Buffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.

Anyone interested in joining up next year should visit the website.

As they state:
No matter your denomination, no matter your occupation, no matter your experience,
join us for a day, a weekend, a few days, a week, all month, whatever you prefer.
This is a terrific way to enjoy time with family and friends, learn of our history, and
make new connections that will last a lifetime.
We’ll take care of your meals, the wagons, and the horses for you (rates below).
Or, you may bring your own food, ride your own horse, walk, or pull your own handcart
- the choice is yours!

Having crossed Iowa myself with horses and wagons
I could feel the road tug at my toes. Hearing the sound of hooves and wheels and the jingle of harness brought back many memories and a longing to be out there again. One more reason to complete my Long Rider qualifying ride of 1000 plus miles in one continuous trek in the near future (present plans are for the spring-summer of 2010).

In the meantime, I am enjoying being out of the basement and having sunlight. The ropes did not chafe too badly and I expect the scars will merely be emotional.
