Exhibit at Newton Public Library

I am very happy to report that the Newton Public Library will be hosting a small exhibit of my work during January and February.

Library exhibits offer local artists the opportunity to exhibit four to six paintings in the public areas of the library on a two-month rotation.

This will be my second exhibit at the library and it will feature my 2003 horse racing collection.

Four images, Don’t Look Now, Flight, Morning Dreams and Whoa! are oil paintings on canvas. They were created as a group in 2003 for the 2003 Village Place Event held in conjunction with the Kentucky Derby that year.

The library is located at 720 North Oak Street in Newton, next to Military Park and two blocks north of the Carriage Factory Gallery.

Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are closed on Sunday.

Beginning the Year With a New Blog

On this January 1, I am launching a new blog. Word Journeys will be all about my writing journeys. Those of you who are interested in the stories I write and the obstacles that go with that (I know you’re out there!), will want to bookmark the new blog.

Those of you who enjoy the artwork but aren’t necessarily interested in the storytelling (and I know you’re out there, too!), can pay no attention to what goes on next door (electronically speaking) and stay on this page to continue reading about the ups and downs of studio life.

I will continue to post daily to one blog or the other. The idea is to fine-tune the focus of each blog without further use of that precious and limited commodity: Time.

I hope you will check out the new blog and let me know what you think.

But even if you don’t, thanks for reading this one and best wishes.

New website design for Kelli’s Pencil Drawing site

Pencilplace.com has been revamped, reworked and redesigned!

In keeping with my philosophy that simpler and cleaner is better, I have re-designed my Pencil Drawings by Kelli Swan website. The new site sports a shorter, more concise index along with more direct navigation. There is also a scroll box on every page, so that users do not have to lose sight of the left index while navigating the site. Custom pencil art was created just for this site, and you will see that in the header design, the navigation buttons and the button rollover effects.

Stay tuned for more site updates soon. I plan to add more dynamic effects as soon as I become comfortable with the new Dreamweaver CS4 application!

Book Release of my Paintings and Poems

The copy of my book ‘Children & their 4-Legged friends, A series of watercolor paintings & poems’ arrived today. I was very excited while waiting for it to arrive. To see my paintings in a publication, along with my poetry all bound into a book. When I held it in my hands for the first time, it seemed very unreal to me. Was I dreaming? Or did a dream come true? So many friends of mine, children and horses I have met over the years, all neatly packed into this book.

The colors are lovely. A deep brick red on the outer dust jacket of the hard cover and also on the soft cover. The paper is of good quality and is nicely bound.

I have made a public preview of this book on the Blurb.com website. You can preview it here: Debbie’s book. You can also order your copies there too. If you order from there, the books will not be hand signed by me. If you would like a hand signed copy, please send me an email at debflood@debfloodart.com and I will set up a payment through Paypal for you.

I also have a link to the book on the right hand sidebar of this Blog.
This is a wonderful way for my collectors and admirers of my art to enjoy 40 paintings collectively in one book. Please pass on the information about this book to your family and friends who enjoy Art, Horses, Children & Poetry.

Thank you,
Debbie

Met another friend at the mural! Sue Kroll

Here I am with Sue Kroll. A fellow artist on the mural, Le Cadeau de Cheval. She sent me this photo, as I was so excited to meet my friends, I forgot to have a photo taken of us together. :)

The internet is so wonderful, you meet friends from all over the country when you have similar interests.

Meeting a long time email buddy!

Here I am with Carol Hendrix! After 10 years of emailing each other back and forth about art, life, and fun, we finally meet! It’s so much fun to meet someone who’s been a friend for so long, when you’ve never seen each other in person…

We spent some time together in Cowboy Christmas, and the next day, headed to the flea markets. What a great time we had.

Visiting the mural in Vegas! Le Cadeau de Cheval

Here I am, visiting the mural at the Cowboy Christmas show in the North part of the Thomas and Mack Center. You can visit the mural’s webpage all you want, but it’s nothing like seeing the mural in person.

It was wonderful to meet Paul, (on your left), and Phil, (on your right). They work so hard but have fun doing it.

I’m hoping the mural can come to the Charlie Russell art show here in Great Falls, in March. It never hurts to dream, eh?

Dec 15 - The Horse commission and an E-Vite

Quite a change from yesterday’s image, and it is so far along that I showed it to the collector for her approval. I still have some more work to do on it, though.

I really enjoyed painting in the fencing behind the horse and will share with you how it was done. The first lines were horizontal, done with white and ultramarine blue. Then the sunlit portions were painted on top of that with just white and a whisper of cadmium orange. The posts were done with that same white/blue mix, and then their sunlit areas were put in with that same white.

Now, even though there is a signature on the work, I will still go in and work on some of the areas before I can truly call it finished. The distant tree needs more limbs, and there are some “issues” that artists have with their work that need resolving before it “reads right” to the originator. Sure was fun to get it to this point though! Can you Boot Camp Graduates tell what time of day it is? (Remember that the time of year also affects your decision!)

On other news, I had one of my bigger paintings accepted into the Saks Gallery Show in Denver, and we’ve just received the invitations. They are gorgeous! If you are in Denver during this time, please come to the opening and see some truly spectacular art. As you can see from the e-vite, there are some truly outstanding artists represented. I’m honored to be among them!

Art for legged creatures

I am excited about a new partnership I am forging with the Kalamazoo County Animal Services. I will be doing portraits of some of the dogs and cats available for adoption from their facility and I will be donating 20% of the sales to them. I was out there today and took some photographs. I was apprehensive about visiting a shelter, I thought it would be too hard to see all the little faces, but all the animals are well cared for; the caretakers know every animal’s name and are very dedicated to their work. It was a clean and cheery atmosphere and I am happy to help them with my small contribution.
It will be a day or two before I can get the first painting in my “For Legged Creatures” series on site so check back soon!! Better yet, feel free to subscribe to my blog and emails will be sent to you and you don’t even have to check back! And pass this site on to your animal loving friends, too. The more people who see the paintings and the animals the better. I am hoping this is the first of many alliances with rescue organizations and that I can use my art to help them out.

Thanks for looking.
Come back for pictures!

Atlas - Helping Paws Entry

Atlas
Atlas was one of my entries in the Canine Art Guild’s Helping Paws Exhibition 2008. I’m very proud to say that I have been one of the winners of the Peoples Choice awards for this exhibition which was designed to help specific rescue/charities in the artists countries of residence. The memebers of the Canine Art Guild come from all around the world.
The price money from this award goes directly to Monica’s Doggie Rescue who cared for Atlas until recently. I’m glad to say that through the use of my portrait it brought his plight of finding a new home into the light and he now has a forever home with a wonderful new family.
Atlas’s portrait is 10″ x 14″ pastel on paper and is for sale $250.00. 20% of the sale price will be donated directly to Monica’s to help other canines in need of care.
If you are interested in purchasing this piece please email me directly at catherin@animalarthouse.com
thanks for looking and a big than you to all those who voted for my work.
