Bones and Skulls

As some of you might remember…I have been contemplating doing a series of still life photos of animal skulls, bones and horns/antlers. I have collected some great objects to work with. (although always looking for more) I have never really done much with still life photography. I do know that I will work in B&W and with natural light. So I have been trying to envision how I want to do these. I now have two pretty strong ideas about what I want to try…but each entails some advance building. For one…I need to find a place that I can build a large sandbox. My back yard is not big enough. I need to have it so that it is like a beach…large open area with strong sunlight. And I will need to be able to cover it in between photo sessions. For the other I need to build an armature of a clamp type thing on a portable boom arm. So that I can clip the bone and kind of suspend it to be able to photograph just a portion of it floating in front of a backdrop. Maybe a stand like what my son has for his cymbals on his drum set. An adjustable boom arm and duct tape an alligator clip to the end. It has to be able to hold the bones without crushing them. And need one strong enough to hold heavier ones too. Hmm….might need two. I will be shooting these with my 2 1/4 camera I think. Funny how eager I am to get started…but this designing and building thing has me stuck. Life of an artist.

On my way in a few minutes to drop off a giclee print from one of my recent Spec Photo Shoots. (still needs a new name for this) I am very excited that this print turned out so beautifully. It is the first I have had done from my 2 1/4 negatives.

“Legs of a Dancer”

I have another print from the Quarry Hill Farm Arabians spec shoot being done now and should be ready to deliver in the next two weeks.

It seems like this idea is a welcome one. I am headed to Texas in November to visit good friend and colleague Lyne Raff, the publisher/editor of http://www.arthorsemagazine.com . I mentioned it last night on Facebook and now have a bunch of people down there asking about my coming to them to do spec photos of their horses. So if you are in the Dallas, Houston or Beaumont areas…or even farther afield and want me to come…let me know! I have always dreamed of traveling the world photographing horses as I go. Looks like Texas in November will be the start of fulfilling that dream! Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any interest in my coming to photograph your horse. We can discuss all the possible ways to make this happen.

Tomorrow I am off on a new adventure. I will tell you all about that next week! A good reason to come back! Please feel free to share my blog with your friends who might be interested in the life of a Fine Art Photographer with a love of horses!

Coming Together Fine!

There has been so much happening in my life over the past few months. I am feeling a bit over whelmed by it all. But I have been handling it one day and step at a time… so here goes …………!

Starting with an opening in Belfast, Maine of an art show at Aarhus Gallery on March 6th which brought a VERY full house. I have one of my mixed media paintings from My Family Series is showcased there. “How You Gonna Keep ‘Em Down On The Farm?” is an 8 x 6” fun look at my Pennsylvania family. I am working on some more of these…. a trip into my past and ancestry…. and it’s a fun trip. It is a step out of my normal subject matter and my focus, but I don’t think you will be disappointed with it. It is innovative and thought provoking. Some say there is certain nostalgia to these works.

Also I have been invited to several invitational exhibits that are being organized by The American Academy of Equine Art. You can see several of my works during The Rolex in April at the AAEA’S building opening April 24th through May 1, 2009.”Start of a New Day” and “Waiting Your Turn” both are being sent to Lexington for the Rolex show.

And then there is another invitational show on Mackinac Island, MI. titled “Pulling Their Weight – Draft and Carriage Horses in Fine Art” from July 15 thru 20, 2009.

AND THEN…. I have a ONE-MAN SHOW coming up in Lexington, KY. in May, titled “Finding My Voice”…at Gallery B. I will be there for the opening reception on May 8th, 2009 from 5-8pm. I hope you can make it! The show will last through the month of May. A portion of the sales from this exhibit will be donated to The Stroke Foundation. I hope this show can raise stroke and aphasia awareness!

I will also be having work hanging at Equidae Gallery in Saratoga Springs, NY. again this summer. And I will be doing a demonstration there “of painting with casein”, date TBA .the dates can be seen on my events page on my website. Come and talk to me!!

AND FINALLY, last but not least!……an interview with me, covering my oeuvre of equine artwork, has come out in ART HORSE MAGAZINE…. and it is so neat to see my work showcased so nicely. And at such a good time! This magazine is an art publication that only comes out twice a year and highlights one equine artist and art photographer in each issue, along with several interesting articles about art or history concerning the horse. A good read! I recommend it and not just because of the article about “MOI”…it is full of good reading!

That’s the story so far…. It’s coming together to be a great year!!!

Sheep / Goats and Llamas

Wondering what I have been up to?

Most of my time lately has been spent organizing the Ex Arte Equinus II equine fine art competition. Art Horse Magazine is sponsoring this show for the second year and I was honored to be asked to be the show director. Fine Art using the equine as subject has been entered from all over the world. Entries were accepted in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Photography. All the images are now off to the judges for them to make their decisions. The show is published in Art Horse Magazine as well as in a book. You can see last years show by going to http://www.arthorsemagazine.com/art_competition_2008.html
In addition to all that administrative work, I have been holed up in the basement printing for my show next year at the Silo Gallery in New Milford, CT. Keep coming back for more updates on that show as they develop. I can tell you that the theme of my work for the show is White Horses and I am contemplating putting together a book to accompany the show and that will be available for sale.
And here is a peek at some proofs from the recent NY State Sheep and Wool Festival that was at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds a few weeks ago. These may come out in boxed sets of cards. Or at least that is what I am thinking right now.
