Beautiful Horses of Pennsylvania Project Beginning

“Beautiful Horses of Pennsylvania” is underway. Pennsylvania is the fourth state in my special series of horse paintings, and I thought your club members might be interested in learning about the project. Everyone is invited to nominate their favorite Pennsylvania horse.

I hope to include a wide variety of breeds, colors, shapes and sizes of horses from throughout Pennsylvania. Up to 25 horses will be selected. An online nomination form is available at . Nominations will be accepted through March 31, 2009.

The project offers an opportunity for horse owners to share details about why their nominated horse is special. The stories for selected horses become an important part of the project, and will be displayed alongside the finished paintings on my website and will be included as part of the exhibition of the completed paintings in 2010.

I will travel throughout Pennsylvania the during June 2009 to photograph selected horses. As an artist, I enjoy personally meeting and photographing the horses in her paintings. Observing the horses at liberty and interacting with their owners helps me portray the horse’s personality in my artwork.

To enter “Beautiful Horses of Pennsylvania” complete the online form or to enter by email, send the following information: description of why this horse should be included in the project (300 words or less), horse’s name, breed, age, color, gender, owner’s name, address, email, and phone. If the horse is kept at a different address than the owner’s, include the address where horse resides. Include the nominator’s name and contact information, if different than owner. Email the information to: kmbrenner@hotmail.com. (If owner is under 18 years old, please list parent’s name, so permission to photograph the horse can be coordinated with a parent.)

Entries must be received by March 31, 2009. Owners of selected horses will be notified by April 15, 2009.

This will be the fourth in my “Beautiful Horses” series. I hope to travel to all 50 states and do a series for each. Earlier series, featuring horses from Texas, Ohio and Michigan, can be viewed on my website .

If you have questions about the project, please contact me at kmbrenner@hotmail.com.

Please share this information with others who might be interested.

Thank you for your help in spreading the news!

Champion Morgan Sunforest Cash Loaded featured in newest painting

Morgans are one of my favorite breeds. Their calm exterior can momentarily mask their extreme kinetic beauty, which is unleashed with their slightest movement, and explodes as they demonstrate their athleticism dancing freely at liberty.

Sunforest Loaded is a Champion Morgan. He was recently honored at the 2008 USEF Horse of the Year banquet where he was named Morgan Reserve Champion, Classic Pleasure Saddle. Congratulations!! He has a long list of awards, with many champion titles. But to his owner Jayne, he’s much more than a show horse. Here’s what she wrote about Sunforest Loaded,

“He is the king and has known it since birth. Celebrated show horse, friend, teacher, babysitter and disciplinarian. He is the master of all he surveys and all must be right in his world. He has gifted me with his heart to cherish and protect, and he will give ALL if I ask . . . . He can be bribed by a mint, or maybe, he only makes you think he can.”

He was ruler of the pasture the day I visited. As alpha horse, he herded his two buddies around the large field. He also made sure his “people” where paying attention. This painting captures him as he glances back to check on us.

Free Weekly To Do List is Online for Horse Lovers

Next week’s To Do List includes the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” I thought the painting I chose to accompany the quote was just right — no not for that reason — because the Paint seems to be really deep in thought about what really matters. The link to the printable pdf file is on Karen’s blog.

Mintse – A Painting of a Fabulous Friesian Stallion

Some horses are breathtakingly beautiful. This Friesan stallion, Mintse, is one of them. I first saw him at the World Friesian Extravaganza near Dayton, Ohio, in 2007. And I sort of followed him around for during the event. You should see him competing in Dressage! And you should see him in the Liberty class! And you should see him just walking from the barn to the arena surrounded by a crowd of fans!

When I decided to travel to Michigan for this year’s series, I emailed the De Boer Family to ask if I could include Mintse in the series. They graciously said, “Yes.”

When I arrived to photograph Mintse, he was gleaming! The family had spent hours preparing him for my visit. And the whole family was on hand to make sure Mintse galloped around the huge pasture and didn’t stop to eat and accidently step on his luxurious mane. (The crew is pictured on the “Beautiful Horses of Michigan” page.) Mintse gave a dramatic performance demonstrating the animated movement that Friesians are famous for.

This statuesque horse is …. well I said it before …. breathtakingly beautiful! It was so fun to get to photograph him. And very tough to decide how to depict him in his painting. My goal was to portray his dramatic energy, bold movement and power.

Hopefully someday you will get to meet Mintse. It’s a great experience.

Click here to see the De Boer’s Friesian Connection websiste with some wonderful photos of Minste and their other horses.

These are paintings #23 in my Beautiful Horses of Michigan series. Click here to see all the paintings completed so far in the series.

Two Beautiful Paints on One Farm

Sara nominated her Paint horse, Hot Streak, for the Beautiful Horses of Michigan project writing, “She’s a big girl but is truly a doll….Her beautiful coloring and wonderful talent catch attention from everyone — in the showring and out.” Sarah also told me that her 4-H club had voted Hot Streak the “prettiest horse,” beating out 50 other horses.

You can see from the painting above, Hot Streak deserved that honor!

But wait….there’s more…. while I was in Sarah’s pasture photographing Hot Steak, the family’s other horses wanted in on the action. They all wanted glamour shots! They were running around together having a ball while I snapped photos. Hot Streak had to herded into a separate pasture so I could concentrate just on her. But I couldn’t help notice the other beautiful Paint in the herd. The mare was Lady and belonged to Sarah’s sister. So when Sarah’s mom declared that if one daughter’s horse was going to be painting, she thought I should also paint the other daughter’s horse as well — it didn’t take any time at all to convince me…… Here’s Lady’s painting.

New Equine Oil Painting – A Study in Contrasts

a-regular-at-jacks-barThis painting is about contrasts: the contrast between organic and geometric shapes, the contrast of bright white against bold orange, the contrast of a voluminous paint horse against the flat planes of the buildings, straight lines and curves.

Paint horses often remind me of abstract art, and “Blossom” was no exception with her striking color. She was a beautiful example of the breed.

Denise, her owner wrote, “She is a playful spirit….The spirit of this filly will steal your heart as she has mine.” Blossom was fun to watch as she gamely trotted around the arena. But she seemed to prefer a pensive pose — demonstrating her calm disposition. If she were a “Regular at Jack’s Bar,” as her registered name infers, I would picture her thoughtfully nursing a single drink for the entire evening.

Daisies and a Pretty Paint – newest painting in series

skippin-on-cloud-9-cheyenSkippin on Cloud 9 was grazing in a grassy pasture filled with sparkling daisies with a backdrop of tall blue spruce trees. What a cheerful setting for this blue-eyed beauty!

Her loving owner writes that this buckskin paint mare “literally takes your breath away when she aims those baby blue mascara eyes at you. She has a way about her of easing the day’s tensions and you find yourself smiling. To watch her in motion is a whirlwind of color. She has always been a sweetheart since she first captured my heart at three months of age. Her magic had me walking on Cloud 9 when I first saw her and she still does.”

What a pretty mare! I hope this painting makes you smile, too.

Romerito, Amazing Bay Andalusian Stallion, is subject of Equine Artist Karen Brenner’s latest painting

romerito-pc110042Romerito is an amazing bay Andalusian stallion that I first met a few years ago at the Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio. His owner, Gabi, was leading him to an exercise arena. I’ll never forget my first impression of Romerito. He was so big, so strong and so powerful — I guess the best word to describe him is unforgettable. I just followed behind the two of them as they walked to the arena. I wanted to see more of Romerito!

When I started planning the Beautiful Horses of Michigan, I asked Gabi if I could include Romerito, and she agreed even though she was busy planning the first Fiesta Midwest 2008, a celebration of the Andalusian breed held in Ohio last June. I was looking forward to seeing Romerito there, but Gabi had so much to do managing the show, she was not able to bring her wonderful stallion to compete. The show was a huge success, and I’m hoping that there will soon be news about a Fiesta Midwest 2009 which will include Romerito!

I did get to visit Gabi and Romerito when I was driving throughout Michigan photographing horses for the Beautiful Horses of Michigan series. He was grazing in a pasture beside his small band of mares with his wonderful babies by their sides! Gabi calls Romerito “her best friend.” It was obvious they enjoy a wonderfully close bond as they played together.

Romerito’s painting is so nontraditional. To me, it conveys the immense power and strength that exudes from this beautiful stallion; that energy seems un compressible — impossible to constrain within the four sides of a painting.

Please take a moment to learn more about Romerito at: Romerito’s Website at http://www.yeguadaromerito.com/Romerito.html

Bandee joins Beautiful Horses of Michigan series

“Bandee” is a miracle baby, who has been winning everyone’s hearts, not to mention more than her fair share of blue ribbons and championships, since she was born. Her owner Jan wrote, “She won her first blue ribbon when she was 4 weeks old. …She won the Michigan overall weanling . . . the National Championship in Murfressboro, Tennessee [at perfect spot for Tennessee Walking Horses to compete] . . . and took National Grand Reserve. . . . by the end of the Nationals, Bandee was awarded National High Point Champion.”

Jan continues, “Bandee is an amazing success story. She is enjoying winter, diving and rolling in snow banks. She is a pure delight to train and play with.”

One secret to their success must be the time Jan and her husband, Colonel John, spend with Bandee. They are at the barn for hours each day teaching Bandee.

When I visited Bandee was a yearling and cute as can be! She adored being around people and had so much fun racing around the arena. She is delightful!

This is the 16th painting in Karen’s “Beautiful Horses of Michigan” series. See the series at http://www.karenbrenner.com/beautiful_horses_of_michigan_gallery.html

Paparazzi Puddy Cat

My blog yesterday was about the Pet Cam I saw advertised in the Target ad. I also had a link to some directions on how to make your own Pet Cam. I decided to give it a try. Those directions looked a bit complicated. So after digging out one of my old cameras and noting the neck strap already attached, I just got a heavy duty chip clip and snapped the Olympus to Skeeter! Voila! Feline Paparazzi! Doesn’t he look like a pro in this photo?

Off we went to the barn for him to shoot some photographs! Equine photography will of course be his specialty.

Here are some of his best shots:

Pretty good for a cat’s first day using a camera!

Okay, he did not take these photos. I’ll have to fess up… I took them this morning …. shooting from a “cat’s eye view.” Skeeter’s shots were just birds and mice. :-)

Pet Cam — Unleash the photographer in your kennel"

I happened to see a Pet Cam in one of the many holiday sale fliers in Sunday’s paper. Having seen the neat photos captured by elephants who’d “worked” as photographers capturing rare footage of man-eating tigers by strategically placing cameras disguised as tree trunks near the dangerous beasts [Click here to watch a clip about this on YouTube], I have to say the idea of a Pet Cam caught my attention!

Now dogs and cats can join the digital photography bandwagon!

I decided to check the camera out online. Here’s a link to the camera: Pet Cam. And it’s available for less from Target. And I even found a website that shows how to make your own pet camera: Here’s a link: Make your own pet cam. This website has a neat photo of the pet camera in action!

I don’t think a pet cam attached to one of my horses give me much new insight about their lives since they live in the pasture right in my backyard, but how about my cat? He is often out on the prowl — sometimes we don’t see him for a 24 hours at a time. It might be interesting to see what he sees on his little treks…. and then again… maybe not.

Baskeeter – The newest “Beautiful Horses of Michigan” painting

baskeeter-skeeter-pc11004Baskeeter is, as his owner Lisa wrote, “26 years young.” This chesnut gelding is a wonderful example of the Arabian breed with his people-loving personality. He was an excellent model and seemed to enjoy posing like a pro for the camera.

Lisa also wrote, “Baskeeter (Skeeter) is an older gentleman, but still very handsome. He has a beautiful head and neck, with a seashell shaped star. His is wonderfully gentle and still incredibly gorgeous. I have owned him since he was 10 months old. He means the world to me.”

It was so interesting to get to see what a close relationship Lisa and Skeeter have.

As an added note: My rescue cat, who chose us at the local humane society, is also named Skeeter!
