I have put the almost finishing touches to this piece, there are a few tiny things to correct but probably only I will notice them. I was eager to get something posted as it has been some time. Some time spent in lovely ways, but not painting. I am happy with many things in this painting, perhaps the most surprising are the two people walking in the background, and the background in general.

This past summer we visited some new friends in upstate New York and stayed overnight. That evening there was a full moon which we watched rise over their rolling hay pasture overlooking the old barn and farm house. It got darker and darker but we could always see their energetic American Eskimo running after large sticks. The moon, the woods and pastures, deer, and the easy company of new friends made it a night I will always remember.

Back to some fun with watercolor dog portraits- this handsome Golden Retriever walked by my booth at “Woofstock”, a dog friendly event put on by the SPCA of Southwest Michigan this past summer. I have a lot of resource material from that day, everyone was proud of their dog(s) and the parade was all day long. Watch for more pup paintings!

It is a little late in the day to get a good picture without glare but I was excited to get this up. There will probably be some tiny tweeking but it is basically done. I am so happy with this one; there were fun textures and shadows, hair and skin tones to work with, all adding up to a dramatic image.

Got some painting done today along with laundry. Heading into the homestretch on the racehorse, adding a bridle will be helpful. The horse show moment is still in the very early stages.

I have been working on the racehorse oil but get impatient with the drying time between layers so decided the best thing to do was to start another one. I liked working on two last fall when I did the two Belgian paintings. This is slightly different in that the subject matter differs more between these two. Ya, I know, it’s still a horse paintng, but to me it’s different, and the palette is a little different, too.
I am not as sure of the second one turning out well, there is a lot of empty space but I think I can make it work.

Here’s what’s on my easel and on my unused Nordictrack this week. You can get a glimpse of my ultra organized studio and the barn out back. It’s a beautiful spot to work in. Virtually finished with these two paintings. I may go back in and mess up the mane a little more, and yellow up the lighter one. I tried to keep loose, and almost succeeded. They do look good from far away
They are titled “Scenes from a Marriage 2 & 3.”

Here are two paintings just waiting to be finished. The two heads has more to go but I am going to try to go lightly and painterly and try to keep it looser. I may go back into the back scratcher one and try to loosen up some of the details there. I love the sky so much in the first one that I think I am going to change the second sky to the more gray tone. Seems more interesting.
So in a few days when I stay home long enough to do some painting we’ll see how things shape up.

and I have two new ones almost ready to show. One I thought was done but I am rethinking it after some of the work I have done on the second one. So I will keep you waiting for a little while. In the meantime, here is a horsey photo to tide you over; it is of my horse Merlin and our friend Kaz.

I was excited tonight to open my October 2009 Sidelines magazine and see a lovely full page featuring my artwork. The pieces reproduced beautifully! I couldn’t be happier-well maybe a teeny bit happier if my name had been spelled correctly on the sidebar- but it’s spelled correctly in my contact information and that is the important part. I look forward to seeing what comes of such great exposure in a national magazine aimed at the world of horse shows, show jumping, eventing, fox hunting and polo.

I have two oil paintings waiting in the wings to be started/completed but couldn’t resist doing another watercolor, a little bigger than usual, about 8×10. This one is of my daughter Carly and our horse, Merlin based on a photo taken while she was home last summer. She just completed 2 years of service in the Peace Corps and as of 2 days ago is home for good, or at least until she decides what to do with the rest of her life! I think I will keep the original, but prints are always available if you are interested.

This portrait was the prize in a raffle for the SPCA of SWMI. This is Moose, who happens to be a rescued dog, and is well loved by her family who were thrilled to win the raffle! Her owner tells her story:
Moosie was a throwaway dog who had a very rough beginning. She is four, or five, we just aren’t certain. She came to us through a friend through a foster family through KAR through finding her on the street in dire need of a family. Well, let me say, she is “home” now and she could not be more loved or cherished. My son is currently in Europe, recently engaged, and we think this will be a lovely gift! Moosie is half Jack Russell and half Scotty…she has the quietest of personalities and we would like you to meet her so you can capture her gentle spirit.
I hope I have, she was a good model!

Tucker belonged to a friend of mine and was her constant companion for many years. A few weeks after photos were taken for this picture she lost him suddenly to cancer. I couldn’t believe it, he was so full of life that day, and then just gone.

Trying to get back in the studio after some fun busy weekends away and getting hay in the barn and finished up this Percheron. She belongs to a friend who does carriage rides but this was definitely a day off for her. We had just returned with another team from a country drive and she was glad to see them back.
This original 5×7 matted (8×10) watercolor is available for $60 plus $5 S&H to the first emailer to lojomjnc@charter.net.
I am also offering 5×7 giclees for $10 plus $5 S&H.
