Let it be

I had started this so long ago that the masking tape would not come off easily. This is of our cousin Helen and their good dog Jack at the beach in Santa Cruz. I have done some pastels of water and beach and have some understanding of the junction, not sure it transferred to watercolor but will let it sit for awhile and think about it. Right now I think I will just let the water be water out there in the ocean; it has done its own thing.

Pastel in progress

Spent 4 hours doing a plein air pastel on Friday with a local art group in the gardens of a local bed and breakfast- Stuart Ave B&B to be exact. They were kind enough to offer us all some treats during the day-delicious. It was a perfect day and it felt so good to do some painting as I have not made the time in a few weeks. Too busy having other fun. This needs some work on the left side but otherwise is turning out well. All the paintings by everyone that day will be on display on Oct. 31 at the B&B during a Kalamazoo Art Hop evening.

Rejected!

I got word last week that these three paintings were not accepted into the American Academy of Equine Artists Fall open show. Sigh. I had been on a little bit of a roll artwise and was hoping for the best. I will keep trying year after year but am wondering if it will really do me any good to get in when I am 90? Guess I will have a lot of nice paintings in the interim at least. Maybe if I added a crow or painted on brown paper (inside joke).

I have been away from the easel for awhile enjoying the summer and the horses but have a lot of things in mind to work on and will get back soon. Love to my fan(s).

Finis

The irises are long gone and this is what remains. I think this is a truer color than the previous WIP. Can’t go wrong painting an iris, it has to turn out well.

Hey, bud

I dont’ do a lot of flowers but these irises are in my front yard and they are fantastic!! Plus I just came back from the Great Lakes Pastel Society convention last weekend and I was eager to do some work in pastels. I won a door prize of some new fixative, which I haven’t normally used on pastels, but it promises not to alter color. If it does what it says I would be more likely to paint with pastels as what stops me from using them is their fragility as a finished painting.

Gift Wrap

I am so happy with how this came out; it is such a vivid memory for me and I will be keeping this one for myself to remind me that I can paint people once in awhile :-)

A gift

Another African inspired painting, about 8×10.  We were hiking out of this village and I was a little behind the rest of my group and this boy ran up with a dove in his hand and stood in front of me. I didn’t know what else to do but take a picture; it was such a beautiful simple gesture.  I am having fun exploring a new skin palette (for me).

Out of Africa

A year and a half ago I went to Africa to visit my daughter serving in the Peace Corps.Visiting a place so completely different from my own life left a lasting impact. But some things remain the same, even if done in different ways. There’s always laundry! This is a painting in progress of her neighbor boy hard at work at his morning chore. This is the first painting I have done on linen and I think it makes me paint more “painterly”. Anyway, it is nice to work on. This is a small piece, about 9×12, just started.

Kalamazoo Area Show!!!

I have been trying to get into this show for many years. It is a juried show at the Kalamazoo Institute for the Arts. It has grown larger and larger each year and is always interesting. There is a different guest juror each year so you never know what might get in. Mostly you know that horse paintings don’t get in a lot and my entry is not a horse painting, but a crow. The dresser is one I inherited from my mother in law, the heart necklace was also hers, as was the inlaid box, now that I think of it. The lamp belonged to my grandparents and was by their bedside.

Spectators

I have put the almost finishing touches to this piece, there are a few tiny things to correct but probably only I will notice them. I was eager to get something posted as it has been some time. Some time spent in lovely ways, but not painting. I am happy with many things in this painting, perhaps the most surprising are the two people walking in the background, and the background in general.

Noah

This past summer we visited some new friends in upstate New York and stayed overnight. That evening there was a full moon which we watched rise over their rolling hay pasture overlooking the old barn and farm house. It got darker and darker but we could always see their energetic American Eskimo running after large sticks. The moon, the woods and pastures, deer, and the easy company of new friends made it a night I will always remember.

Gone to the dogs

Back to some fun with watercolor dog portraits- this handsome Golden Retriever walked by my booth at “Woofstock”, a dog friendly event put on by the SPCA of Southwest Michigan this past summer. I have a lot of resource material from that day, everyone was proud of their dog(s) and the parade was all day long.  Watch for more pup paintings!
